The Federal government says it has commenced the development of ten large scale integrated rice mills as part of efforts to boost food production in Nigeria.

The Minister of agriculture and rural development, Dr Mohammad Abubakar stated this at the maiden edition of international agric show and food fair holding in Akure the Ondo state capital.

Kayode Animasaun reports that Farmers from across the country converged on the international culture and event center for the food fair to display their products at affordable price.

Represented by the Southwest Zonal director of the ministry,Mrs Abimbola Oguntunyi ,the Agric Minister said when completed, the Rice Mills with combined minimum capacity of 320 metric tonnes par day, would enhance rice production.

Dr Abubarka pointed out that Nigeria was currently the largest producer of rice in Africa with production of over 9 million metric tons since 2019.

He also expressed the readiness of the federal government to revive the agriculture sector , hence the bilateral agreement with Brazil geared towards improving mechanised agriculture to address food security

Declaring the food fair open, governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu ,represented by his deputy Lucky Ayedatiwa commended the Ondo state agricultural commodities association, OSACA, for all their activities in the state which had helped the state to achieve a lot in the sector.

Governor Akeredolu who highlighted measures put it place to further develop agricultural sector expressed government’s readiness to partner any willing investors to harness the potentials in Ondo state.

In a remark, the chairman of OSACA ,Mr Oluwagbemiga Obawoya said the food fair was initiated to further encourage farmers from across the country

Mr Obawoya however called on the state government to address the problem of bad roads being the major challenge facing farmers in Ondo state.
