Morocco, Algeria Open WAFCON with Big Wins as Group B Beckons

By Maxwell Oyekunle

Hosts Morocco began their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign in impressive fashion, thrashing Kenya 4-0 in Group A.

The result followed Algeria’s 2-0 victory over Senegal, with Marine Dafeur scoring from the penalty spot before Melissa Bethi sealed the win late in the second half.

Attention now shifts to Group B, where Côte d’Ivoire will face Burkina Faso, while defending champions South Africa take on Tanzania.

Côte d’Ivoire are returning to the competition after a 12-year absence, while Burkina Faso are seeking their first WAFCON victory.

South Africa, meanwhile, will look to begin their title defence with a win against Tanzania.

The top two teams in each group will advance to the knockout stage, with the competition also offering a pathway to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
