Women groups and associations have been urged to intensify efforts in the fight to eliminate all forms of violence against women and children.

The Vice President of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, B Zone, Comrade Omobola Nowo-ola Akingbehin made the call in her message to commemorate the international day of elimination of violence against women and girls with the theme ‘Orange the world, end violence against women now’.

Comrade Akingbehin maintained that to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls, all hands must be on deck either through prevention which involves awareness and sensitization, or response which includes health care, security, legal and psychological intervention.

She posited that women hold a very critical position in the society which demands that they must be intentional in the campaign against Gender Based Violence.

Comrade Akingbehin highlighted sexual abuse, rape involving minors, underaged girls, wife battery, maltreatment of widows by step-children or other relatives, as some of violence against women and children.

She emphasised the need for female journalists to be at the forefront of enlightening citizens about rights and policies available to protect women rights as well as advocate on issues that affect citizens like the implementation of Violence against Persons Prohibition law.

The NAWOJ Vice President also stressed the need to promote unity and peace, among the women folk, speaking with one voice to fight against all forms of Violence Against Women and Girls, as she admonished against selfish interests.
