There was tension at Parakin area of Ile-Ife as hoodlums attacked the Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, management and some Journalists. 

The incident happened on Monday afternoon when the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ogunbodede, other management and members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists were visiting the hostel built by the school. 

When the school entourage was about accessing the route leading to the hostel, scores of hoodlums armed with guns, cutlasses, axes and other dangerous weapons waylaid the vehicles and threatened to kill anybody who attempted to access the route. 

The hoodlums numbering about six shot sporadically, hitting vehicles in the entourage and damaging a camera, while the VC and the Public Relations Officers, Mr Abiodun Olarewaju escaped by whiskers.

Addressing newsmen on the Campus after the incident, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ogunmodede was addressing newsmen alleged that the hoodlums were land grabbers who were bent on acquiring gazetted land of the university.

He said the University had completed a hostel in the area for two and half years to solve accommodation shortage on the Campus, but did not allow students to occupy it due to the threat posed by the hoodlums.

Professor Ogunmodede insisted that the University would continue to maintain peace because the university could not exist without the host community.

The Vice Chancellor informed that the federal government had given us a matching order that the land must be secured, while a substantial amount of money had been provided for the fencing.
