Osun State government has commenced emergency rehabilitation of 200 kilometres of roads across the state. 

The state government conducted newsmen round the roads which is divided into five zones, covering the nine federal constituencies of the State

The rehabilitation project which is being carried out by the Osun State Road Maintenance Agency covers twenty-five major roads across various local governments.

Speaking during the tour, Special Adviser to the Governor on Works and Transport, Mr Toke Olaniyan explained that, Governor Adegboyega Oyetola approved rehabilitation of over 25 roads across the state to improve socio-economic activities and also improve vehicular movements in the state, notwithstanding their status as federal or state roads.

Mr Olaniyan said the people could not be suffering poor road network while the government looked away under the guise of federal road.

He said the project had been divided into five zones including Ikirun/Ila, Iwo/Ejigbo, Ife/Ijesha, Osogbo/Ede and Gbongan/Ikire to ensure ease of coordination.

“The Agency is presently working in 5 zones including Ife zone; Ipetumodu-Ode-omu road with a length of 5-83km, linking Ife North and Ayodnade Local Government Areas Ayetoro Street in Ifetedo, Ife-South Local Government with a length of 0.85km”.

“Ilesa Zone; (1) Wesley-Guild Hospital/ Oke-from road in Ilesa East Local Government Area with a length of 0.748km, school of Health Technology junction, Ilesa/Orogboji/Ayegbaju/ Iwikum/lyinta/twara/Ifewara road, linking ILesa East and Atakumosa West) covering a length of 8.0km, Ita-Akogun /Ita-Ofa/General Hospital road, Ilesa, in Ilesa West Local Government”

“Iwo Zone

 (ii) Odo-Ori/Adeke road in Iwo Local Government Area with a length of 5.460km. OSADEP Junction (Aawe/Oyo road) / Bowen University. Iwo Local Government Area, covering a length of 4.300km

(iii) Gbongan lleogbo /Iwo road linking Ayedaade/Ayedire and Iwo Local

Government Areas, covering a length of 24.260km

(iv) Ogbaagba/Ikire-Ile/Ajagunlase road in Olaoluwa Local Government Area with a length of 18.okm.”

The Special Adviser added that the road rehabilitation programme would cost the state about one billion naira.

Similarly, the General Manager of the Osun Road Maintenance Agency, Mr Ogunsola Ajao assured that the work would be completed before the rainy season.

Mr Ajao explained that one of the roads was a federal government project that has before for seventeen years.

Radio Nigeria spoke with some users of the roads including commercial drivers and market women.

One of them, a resident of Iwo, Mrs Tawakalitu Azeez who commended government intervention said the road was a nightmare both during raining and drying season.

Also, a commercial driver, Mr Remi Ibrahim appealed to the government to extend the Iwo road project to Gbongan so that traders from Iwo to Gbongan would be saved the trouble of long distance to Iwo through another route.
