Sickle cell is a serious disease with a significant effect on a person’s life, hence the need for government to subsidize health care facilities to ease their plight.

A retired professor of Haematology at the University College Hospital Ibadan Adeyinka Falusi stated this at a forum in Ibadan.

Professor Falusi while stating that patients with sickle cell anaemia go through a lot of pains when in crisis, said government and private individuals should assist them in any way they could.

On his part, an associate professor of Biostatistics, College of Medicine at the University of Ibadan, Dr Onoja Akpa said studies indicated that complications in sickle cell patients were triggered by cases of multiple sexual partners and use of unsterilized sharp objects.

Dr Akpa Identified Hepatitis and HIV as risk factors for those living with the disease.
