The Secretary of Delta State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Comrade Dan Basime, has urged women to contest for positions of authority to address the gender imbalance in the leadership structure of the union.

Comrade Basime made the call during the election of leadership of the Delta State Chapter of the Nigeria Women in Education Network, NIWEN at the NUT State Secretariat in Asaba, the state capital.

The NUT State Secretary noted more women participation in unionism would amplify their appeals for a fair working environment and promote the development agendas of the union.

At a Women conference before the election, the guest speaker, Mrs. Vera Osiloya, listed some of the factors affecting women participation in governance and the society.

At the end of voting, Comrade Atagana Ese-Joy emerged as the Delta State Coordinator of the Nigeria Women in Education Network, while Comrade Oyelade Nkem was elected as State Secretary of NIWEN.
