The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has called on stakeholders to mobilize electorate for collection of 754, 704 Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs to be able to perform their civic responsibility.


Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC in Oyo state, Dr Mutiu Agboke who made the appeal at the stakeholders meeting on the last quarter of the Continous Voters Registration, CVR for Oke-Ogun zone in Saki, listed Saki West as the local government with the highest number of uncollected PVCs of 29,413 out of 111,211 PVCs yet to be collected by registrants across the ten local government areas in the zone.


He urged politicians, religious and traditional rulers to support the commission towards easing the task.


Dr Agboke confirmed that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS is a game changer, which has put an end to electoral frauds, stressing that the era of unpopular candidate winning elections was over.


The REC advised politicians to shun vote buying, reiterating that the electoral act stipulates two years jail term and a fine of five hundred thousand naira for offenders.


Speaking on behalf of other Electoral Officers in the zone, the INEC Electoral Officer in Saki West, Prince Oyewale Adenrele lamented that poor turn out of registered voters for collection of PVCs necessitated the stakeholders meeting in order to intimate them that without the PVCs, there would be no vote.


Earlier, the Okere of Saki land, Oba Khalid Olabisi, while receiving INEC entourage on a homage visit to his palace who decried that less than 20% of people in Oke-Ogun have been captured during the registration exercise, tasked INEC to devolve registration to wards level for resident to get registered.


Oba Olabisi stated that people in the Oke-Ogun zone are farmers and business owners who had encountered difficulty in their attempts to get registered, hence the need for the commission to decentralize the process to encourage the people.


Some elected local government chairmen from Oke-Ogun zone including, Mr. Sarafadeen Omirinde, Mrs Ramat Adeniran, Chief Salimonu Afolabi and Mrs Julianah Akanni promised to intensify efforts through increased sensitization, mobilization and collaboration with the traditional rulers to reduce the high number of uncollected PVCs.


Traditional rulers, community leaders and political parties representatives across the ten local government areas in Oke-Ogun zone present promised to ensure reduction in the number of uncollected PVCs.
