The Ogun State House of Assembly, OGHA, has urged the State Government to urgently reconstruct the “Gada Aro” Bridge in Abeokuta to improve public safety, ease traffic congestion and boost socio-economic development.
The House made the call after debating a motion titled, “Urgent Call on the State Government to Reconstruct the “Gada Aro” Bridge in Abeokuta,” sponsored by the member representing Abeokuta North State Constituency, Dr Babatunde Tella.
Dr Tella said the deteriorating condition of the bridge required urgent government intervention, noting that its reconstruction would provide an alternative route for commuters and reduce pressure on existing road networks.
He added that the project would open up new economic opportunities, support urban development and make the bridge the fourth major bridge serving the state capital.
Supporting the motion, Mr Bisi Oyedele stressed the need for a strong maintenance culture to preserve public infrastructure.
He called for regular assessments and timely rehabilitation of infrastructure to prevent complete deterioration.
A former Speaker of the Assembly, Mr Olakunle Oluomo, also supported the motion, saying the reconstruction of the bridge would significantly reduce vehicular congestion, particularly during peak traffic periods.
Following the debate, the House Leader, Mr Yusuf Sheriff, moved a motion to convert the debate into a House resolution.
Mr Lukmon Atobatele seconded the motion, which all members unanimously supported through a voice vote.
Consequently, the Speaker of the Assembly, Mr Oludaisi Elemide, directed the Clerk to forward a copy of the resolution to the Governor for necessary action.
