Parents must channel sincere efforts at checking harmful practices on the girl child in order to tackle social vices in the society.

Oyo State Commissioner for Education Science and Technology, Mr Ramanh AbdulRaheem made the submission at the International Day of the African child celebration organized by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, At Bethel Comprehensive College, Alakia -Isebo Ibadan.

Represented by Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs Ayobami Oluokun, Mr Abdulraheem explained that the harmful practices included female genital cutting, and tribal marking these vices had over the years impacted negatively on the girl child.

Earlier in an address of welcome, Oyo State Chairperson, Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Mrs Jadesola Ajibola, advised children to always stand up for their rights and should not allow themselves to be violated under any circumstance.

The guest speaker at the occasion, Dr Kunle Awotiku urged parents and guardians to shun psychological abuse which could negatively affect the future of their children.
