The Owa Ale of Ikare Akoko, Oba Adeleke Adegbite-Adedoyin, has suspended the celebration of this year’s popular annual New Yam Festival of the ancient town in honour of the victims of the Owo massacre.

The monarch gave this indication when he visited the Owo kingdom to sympathize with the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Ogunoye and the families of those who lost their lives in the recent attack.

Oba Adedoyin noted that the decision to suspend the over 600-year-old festival for the first time in centuries was to honour victims of the wicked attack in Owo and also to consolidate brotherhood between Olowo and Owa-Ale who left Ile-Ife at the same time according to history.

Owa-Ale accompanied by some of his High Chiefs, prayed that God Almighty will punish the perpetrators of the dastardly act, commending the efforts of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu in tackling insecurity through Amotekun Corps.

Responding, the Olowo of Owo expressed appreciation to Ikare people and Owa-Ale for the show of love and for identifying with Owo people at this critical time.
