He warned that any act of violence would not be tolerated.

The Olubadan assured residents that the palace had put in place necessary measures to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free celebration throughout the festival period.

Politicians seeking elective offices in the 2027 elections have been advised to prioritise service delivery, competence and grassroots impact rather than relying solely on political affiliations and endorsements.

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, gave the advice while speaking with newsmen at his private residence in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Oba Ladoja said there was nothing wrong with politicians using his name to promote their political ambitions, describing all politicians and residents of the state as his sons and daughters.

The monarch noted that politicians have the right to associate with him and leverage his name in pursuit of their ambitions.

Oba Ladoja, a former Senator and Governor of Oyo State, however, maintained that using his name alone could not guarantee electoral victory, stressing that antecedents and contributions to grassroots development would remain critical factors.

The Olubadan urged aspirants and candidates to focus on programmes and policies that would directly impact the lives of the people, noting that voters in Oyo State would place greater emphasis on competence and credibility during the elections.

Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo III, has called for moral reorientation and stronger community leadership to curb violence against women and girls.

Oba Gbadebo spoke at Nigeria’s Sixth Men-Only Townhall Meeting at Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos, with the theme: “A Cultural Roadmap to Ending Violence against Women and Girls,” which focused on cultural accountability, community responsibility and the role of men in ending gender-based violence.

Represented by Bobagunwa of Egbaland, Toye Okanlawon, the monarch described the situation as “appaulling” and long overdue for decisive action.

“This kind of engagement is long overdue. When you look at what our girls, our sisters and daughters are going through today, the situation is alarming,” he said.

He said the rising cases of gender-based violence reflected a breakdown of values within families and communities.

When a father beats his wife or a wife abuses her husband, what example are we setting for the children? They grow up to replicate what they see,” he said.

Oba Gbadebo stressed that, efforts to curb GBV must begin from the home, noting that children raised in violent environments are more likely to normalise abuse.

The monarch added that the failure to instill discipline and balance in parenting, particularly in raising male children, contributes to the persistence of harmful behaviours.

“We must raise our sons with the same sense of accountability and discipline as our daughters. When there is no balance, society pays the price,” he said.

He urged traditional rulers and community leaders to take responsibility for dismantling harmful norms that enable abuse, particularly practices that silence victims or shield perpetrators.

Custodians of culture must take a stand. What is wrong is wrong, and it must not be tolerated in any community,” he said.

Chairman of the occasion, Actor and Production manager Yemi Sodimu, described the initiative as a response to a “national problem” requiring urgent and collective action.

He stressed that communities must take ownership of the fight against GBV, noting that the South-West, particularly Lagos and Ogun states, has remained at the forefront of social change. “What is bad is bad; it has no two ways,” he said.

He warned that failure to act would leave a damaging legacy for future generations, stressing the need to prioritise the protection and development of girls.

Citing data presented at the meeting, Sodimu said Ogun State records an average of 41 domestic violence cases daily—about 15,000 annually.

He added that Lagos documented 8,692 cases of sexual and domestic violence between August 2024 and July 2025.

“One in three girls in Ogun is likely to experience sexual abuse before age 18,” he said, noting that victims in Lagos include children as young as 18 months.

Also speaking, Founder and Executive Director of The Gnosis Help Initiative, Barrister Olumide Omosebi said GBV cases in Lagos rose from 3,943 in 2020 to over 8,600 within 11 months in 2024—an average of 28 cases daily.

He noted that about 86 per cent of sexually abused children are familiar with their abusers, often relatives or family members.

“Children are now more likely to be abused within their own homes than outside,” he said.

Omosebi identified harmful cultural practices such as “settlement culture” as major enablers of abuse, allowing perpetrators to evade justice.

He urged traditional rulers to discourage out-of-court settlements and ensure offenders are held accountable.

“The only way forward is for custodians of culture to reject harmful practices and ensure justice is served,” he said.

The initiative aligns with the broader development drive of the present administration, particularly in its second term, where projects have been deliberately linked to economic growth and long-term progress“.

The state’s aviation infrastructure has also recorded major milestones, with the international runway completed in November 2025 and already in use. With the prospect of direct international flights, the state is positioning itself as a key gateway for investment and tourism“.

Infrastructure development has also remained a priority, with road networks expanded and upgraded to connect various geopolitical zones within the state. Improved connectivity is making the movement of goods, services and people more efficient“.

These combined efforts are designed to attract more investors, visitors and tourists, ultimately strengthening the state’s economy and generating employment, particularly for young people. The signing of the concession agreement marks another step in this direction, with the investor expected to outline key aspects of the partnership”, Folami said.

In a remark, the Managing Director of the private firm, Obafela Bank-Olemoh, who led other members of the company, commended the Governor Makinde-led government for its merit-based approach to awarding contracts, noting that he never knew nor met anyone outside the advertorial that prompted his company’s applications before it was awarded the deal.

He noted that the concession forms part of the state government’s wider strategy to unlock the economic potential of underutilised public assets through public-private partnerships.

A day meant to give life instead exposed how cheaply society values it.

At about noon on Thursday, March 19, 2026, the streets of Ozoro, headquarters of Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, changed.

A young woman riding on a motorcycle was dragged to the ground.

Another ran, clutching what was left of her torn dress, as hands reached for her from every direction.

Somewhere else, a girl, someone’s daughter, used both hands to shield her body from a mob closing in.

These were not isolated scenes. They were happening at the same time, on the same streets, under the same sky.

And they were happening in the name of the Alue-Do Festival.

Alue-Do, by every account from elders and custodians of tradition, is about fertility, hope, and the quiet prayers of couples longing for children.

It is a festival that honours womanhood, not one that hunts it.

But on this day, something broke.

Fear spread faster than any announcement. Shops shut their doors. Mothers called their daughters in panic. Some women hid indoors, refreshing their social media accounts for updates, praying the violence would pass them by.

Others did not get the warning.

Among them were students of Southern Delta University, who are young women far from home, unfamiliar with local signals of danger.

By the time they understood what was happening, it was already too late.

Some ended up in hospital beds.Others are left with something less visible, but far more enduring.Trauma.

The most chilling part is not just what happened, but how easily it happened.

In broad daylight. In public spaces. With people watching, recording, and in some cases, participating.

This was not a misunderstanding. It was not youthful exuberance gone wrong. It was a collapse of restraint. A failure of humanity.

Even the throne could not hide its shock. The Ovie of Ozoro Kingdom, Anthony Ogbogbo, spoke with rare disbelief.

According to the traditional ruler, in his over two decades on the throne, never had such a thing been associated with any festival in his domain.

That draws a sharp line between culture and crime. Culture did not strip those women. Culture did not chase them through the streets. Culture did not turn a festival into a hunting ground. People did and they must answer for it.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest of a community leader and several others in connection with the incident.

According to the Police, the suspects include a community head identified as Omorede Sunday and four others believed to be organisers of the festival.

Though investigations are ongoing and government officials have issued strong statements.

However, for the victims, statements are not enough.

What does justice look like for the girl who cannot forget the hands that grabbed at her in public?

What does accountability mean for the woman who now thinks twice before stepping outside?

How does a community restore dignity once it has been so publicly torn apart?

These are not abstract questions and they demand more than routine responses.

The Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act is explicit: no one has the right to violate another under any guise, cultural or otherwise.

So the issue is not the absence of law. It is the will to enforce it fully. If this is dismissed as “one unfortunate incident,” it will happen again, somewhere else, under a different name.

And if every perpetrator is not identified and prosecuted, then the message is simple and dangerous: that a crowd can erase accountability.

This is bigger than Ozoro. It is about the everyday vulnerability of women, how quickly a normal day can turn into a fight for dignity, how easily safety can disappear, how silence and inaction can embolden the next act.

The Alue-Do Festival was meant to celebrate life. Instead, it exposed how fragile respect for life has become. And as investigations continue, one truth must not be buried under official statements and fading headlines.

What happened on March 19, 2026 was not tradition. It was not culture. It was violence. And the festival, believed to give life, was never part of it.

Residents of Ijebu-Ode on Monday took to the streets in a peaceful protest, backing the Ogun State Government’s suspension of the Awujale selection process and demanding stiff punishment for anyone linked to bribery.

The protesters, under the banners of Ijebu Sons and Daughters and Ijebu-Ode Progressive Youths, marched through major streets of the town, displaying placards with inscriptions such as “Awujale stool is not for sale,” “Governor Abiodun, save Ijebuland from crisis,” and “We want the best prince as Awujale.”

The procession terminated at the Ijebu-Ode Local Government Secretariat, where the Chairman, Mr Dare Adebiosu, addressed the demonstrators.

Honourable Adebiosu said the Ogun State Government has no preferred candidate for the Awujale stool, explaining that the suspension was solely to guarantee strict adherence to due process.

He stressed that the government’s intervention was aimed at ensuring fairness, transparency, and peace in Ijebuland, assuring that the process would resume at the appropriate time and produce an Awujale acceptable to the people.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Alhaji Babatunde Salami said the demonstration was to caution kingmakers against actions that could undermine the integrity of the revered stool.

He described the Awujale stool as highly respected within and outside Yorubaland, adding that it must not be subjected to manipulation or monetary influence.

Also speaking, Mr Yusuf Adetilewa and Mrs Morolayo Oyesefo called for equal treatment of all contestants, urging the government to sanction both bribe givers and takers to prevent future disputes and litigation.

Meanwhile, traditional rulers known as the Alagemos in Ijebuland have also endorsed the state government’s action.

Speaking after a meeting at the palace of the Ija-Oloko of Imosan, the Alapini Awopa General of Ogun State, High Chief Tajudeen Adekunle Muili, expressed confidence that the suspension was not intended to impose any candidate, but to ensure due process.

Similarly, the Gbosa and Baale of Imosan, High Chief Wahab Samsideen Adebayo, said the suspension would allow kingmakers to conclude the process transparently, noting that the Funsengbuwa Ruling House had already submitted its list of candidates.

Both traditional leaders appealed for an expedited process that would lead to the emergence of an Awujale committed to peace and development in Ijebuland.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, received a jubilant welcome in Modakeke, Osun State, during a historic visit that underscored a renewed commitment to peace and collaboration between the two communities.

Thousands of residents lined the streets as traditional drummers and cultural troupes heralded the Ooni’s arrival at the palace of the Ogunsua of Modakeke, Oba Joseph Toriola.

In his address, Oba Toriola praised the Ooni’s dedication to harmony across Yorubaland.

“We see what you are doing across Yorubaland, in the North, East and even abroad. You have allowed peace to reign, and for that, we are grateful,” Oba Toriola stated.

The Ogunsua then shifted focus to two critical local issues as he called for enhanced security measures, citing reports of bandit incursions, and made a direct political appeal.

“Kabiyesi, the time has come for an Ife-born governor. Let us work together to achieve this,” Oba Toriola declared.

“No war can ever happen again between Ife and Modakeke, not under my reign as the Arole Oduduwa. Those who cause trouble are thieves, not our people,” Ooni Ogunwusi declared.
