Grassroots engagement has been described as the best approach towards the growth of democracy.

The chairman of ACCORD in Lagelu Local Government Area, Oyo State, Chief Segun Ogunkanmi, made this assertion on Tuesday, while addressing hundreds of the party members at its secretariat, in Lalupon town.

The leadership of ACCORD in the local government area organised the meeting for its members to strategise ahead of the 2023 election.

They also used the opportunity of the meeting to unveil Mr Oluwatobi Fatoki and Mr Philips Olasupo as the party candidates for the State House of Assembly (Lagelu) and Federal House of Representatives (Lagelu/Akinyele) elections respectively.

Ogunkanmi said the meeting was called because the leadership of the party acknowledged the importance of such engagement with grassroots members.

He maintained that roles of party members across the 14 wards in the local government could not be underrated in the quest to record victory in the forthcoming general election.

The chairman charged party members across the wards to begin door-to-door mobilisation for more members so that ACCORD candidates for the Assembly, House representatives, Senate and governorship seats would emerge winners in the general elections.

He recalled that ACCORD, during the 2011 general elections won the Assembly and House of Representatives seats few months after the emergence of the party in the state.

He urged all party members to adopt the 2011 zeal and commitment so that the party would be able to reclaim victory again.

In their seperate remarks, the House Assembly and Reps candidates, Fatoki and Olasupo, promised quality representation if given the opportunity to serve.

Fatoki said he’s contesting because of the yearn for positive change towards the outcry of the people in the state constituency.

According to him, better and positive representation will be his watchword if elected.

He added that projection of Lagelu State Constituency in a limelight by doing the needful for the progress of his constituency would be his priority.

Fatoki further stated that his ambition to represent the constituency was to
promote better legislative affairs in the assembly.

“I will also collaborate with the executive for the development of my constituency as the case maybe.

“If given the opportunity to serve my constituency, I am going to sponsor bill that will bring good tidings to the people of Oyo State as a whole.”

He explained that ACCORD being a party that believe in grassroots democracy and that constant dialogue with his constituents would be priortised.

According to him, dialogue with the people will make him know their plights and what to be done.

In the same vein, the House of Representatives candidate, Oladosu, who was represented at the meeting by Mrs Toyosi Ajobo, said he would fast track federal government projects to his constituency if elected.

He added that his mission if elected to represent Lagelu/Akinyele at the green chamber was to bring federal governance nearer to the grassroots.

Two members of the party, Mr Taliatu Adio and Mrs Aisha Adepoju, in their seperate remarks, enjoined all members to work towards the success of the party in the forthcoming general election.

Adio maintained that total commitment of all members to the progress of the party remain the only way to win election.

Adepoju urged members to start wooing every constituent on the need to vote ACCORD candidates in the forthcoming general election.
