Osun State Government says it will no longer tolerate the display of wares on the roads and pedestrian walkways.

The  State Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mrs Funke Egbemode, who made this known in a statement after the State Executive Council meeting, said the ban became necessary because of growing traffic snarl and danger to everybody using the markets.

Mrs Egbemode who said the government has set up a task force to stop the trend explained that the team will pay unscheduled visits to the markets and arrest those obstructing traffic with their wares.

The team will work with the Federal Road Safety Corps and other law enforcement agencies to ensure safety in the markets.

Mrs Egbemode advised traders and artisans who have encroached on the main roads and walkways with their wares to vacate such unauthorised trading spots with immediate effect.

Traders Comply with Government’s Directive

Traders in Osogbo, the Osun State Capital have started complying with the state government’s order that they should not display their wares on major roads.

A visit by Radio Nigeria correspondent to Owode market, Ede, indicates that the usual display of goods on roads are no more.

However, the case was different in Alekuwodo and Okefia markets Osogbo as traders display their goods and wares as usual.

The situation in Owode Ede makes the roads to look wider as the traders kept their goods not beyond demarcation approved by the government.

Many traders were seen discussing in groups as some have no other place to display their goods apart from the road sides.

Men of the Amotekun Corps, Osun Traffic Marshal, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Federal Roads Safety Corps were visible to enforce the order.

It would be recalled that Osun State Government after its weekly executive council meeting Tuesday, announced ban of display of goods and wares on roads and pedestrian walkways in the state.
