The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission, ODIEC has shifted the planned local government elections till February 2024.

The commission announced the shift in the date from initial December 16, at a meeting with political parties and other stakeholders in Akure.

ODIEC Chairman, Dr Joseph Aremo said the adjustment was due to the non-compliance with electoral rules by the political parties, with particular reference to the conduct of party primaries.

Dr. Aremo emphasized that the commission had put in place adequate preparations and received approval from Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu for the conduct of the election in December this year until the lackluster performance by the various political parties.

The ODIEC chairman who said the meeting was to review the commission’s activities also released the adjusted timetable and schedule of activities to the political parties and stakeholders at the meeting.

The ODIEC Commissioner in charge of Budget, Operations, and Legal, Prince Dele Akinyelure, said 17 political parties have so far expressed interest in the local government election.

Responding, the Director of Publicity, PDP, Ondo State, Mr Kennedy Peretei expressed confidence in the composition of the new ODIEC leadership and urged the commission to comply with the Electoral Act in the conduct of the council poll.

Various political parties were represented at the stakeholders’ meeting.
