The Managing Director, National Inland Waterways Authority, Dr. George Moghalu, has expressed immense grief on the boat accidents that happened at Gurin River, a suburb of Fufore Local Government Area, Adamawa State, and a river in Gbajibo, Mokwa LGA, Niger State.

In a statement issued by the NIWA’s media office and made available to newsmen in the early hours of Wednesday, September 13, it stated that Moghalu extends his heartfelt sympathies to the families of the dead and the injured.

“The incident is more disheartening as some of the victims onboard were reportedly heading for farming activities,” Moghalu said.

Commending the life-saving work of the first responders, local divers and police marine at the scene of the incident, Moghalu wished the wounded a speedy recovery, and success in the search and rescue of some missing passengers on the capsized boat.

“Transporters are advised to ensure strict adherence to safety regulations on the nation’s waterways.  There is the need for the people in the Riverine communities traveling by boats and canoes to use life jackets and avoid overcrowded boats,” he added.

The NIWA MD prayed that the Almighty God would comfort the grieving relations at this very difficult time.
