Brilliant and indigent students from Ogun West Senatorial District have been offered a lifeline to complete their educational pursuits in tertiary institutions across the country, with the unveiling of “YAYI Scholarship Scheme”, beginning from the 2023/2024 academic session.

At the unveiling in Ilaro, Yewa South Local Government Area of the state, Chairman of the YAYI Scholarship Board, Professor Tope Popoola said more than 1,000 indigent students would benefit from the scholarship, initiated by the Senator representing Ogun West, Senator Solomon Adeola.

Identifying merit as a major factor in the selection process, Professor Popoola said all 200 level students of Ogun West extraction, with the minimum CGPA of 2.1 or its equivalent in public tertiary institutions were eligible to apply online through www.yayihelp.com for the scholarship.

“It is the Distinguished Senator Adeola’s belief that many of the untapped potential in the intellectual ability of the people of the district encouraged him to further expand the existing Bursary Scheme into a Scholarship awarding Board.” Professor Popoola said.

Our versatile representative at the upper Legislative Chamber also reckons that education will bring a medium and long term turn-around in the living standard of the people of Ogun West and he is anxious to see both parents, guardians and our youths feel the impact of his desire to improve the living standard of the people” he added.

Also, the Secretary of the Board and Registrar, Tai Solarin University of Education, TASUED, Ajiroba Dapo Oke said the scheme was aimed at ensuring that no brilliant student of Ogun West was denied access to education due to poverty, pointing out that Senator Adeola’s initiative would augment the government’s effort to providing quality education to the people.

Ajiroba Dapo Oke, who noted that the government could not fund education effectively, explained that the scheme was promoting the distribution of wealth by ensuring that the rich would pay for the education of the poor members of the society.

He expressed optimism that more political office holders would rise to the responsibility of enhancing the youths access to education through the introduction of bursary awards and other support.

Earlier, other members of the Board, including the Rector, Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Professor Mikhail Akinde and Mrs Bisi Olaotan had affirmed that the plan was to educate the youths towards eliminating poverty in the Senatorial District, pointing out that all eligible students would be given equal opportunities, regardless of political affiliations.

Other Speakers who acknowledged that eligible youths in their large numbers were indicating interest to take advantage of the scholarship by applying online through www.yayihelp.com commended Senator Adeola for promoting education as a tool to boost human capital development.

They called on other prominent sons and daughters of Ogun West to emulate the Senator by supporting the government to make life better for the people, especially the vulnerable groups.
