Property worth millions of naira was destroyed in an inferno on Saturday at Oja tuntun in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Speaking with newsmen, the Spokesperson of the Osun state fire service, Mr Adekunle Ibrahim said the firemen got a distress call from a resident living near the market around midnight.

Mr Ibrahim said by the time the fire fighters got to the market, a container and about seventeen shops had been affected while the fire was put out with the assistance of the Obafemi Awolowo University, ile- ife fire team.

He maintained that the cause of the inferno has not yet been ascertained as at the time of filing this report.

Also speaking, the Public Relations Officer of the Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Mr Kehinde Adeleke, said operatives of the command were on guard at the scene to prevent looting, as firemen battled to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the market.

Some shop owners, who couldn’t hide their emotions were being pacified by sympathizers.

A shop owner, Mrs Toyin Olatunde said she had lost all she had to the inferno, appealing to the Osun state government to come to their aid.

It would be recalled that Oja tuntun market has been gutted three times between July 2019 and December 2020.
