Two young siblings, Jelad Oluwaranakinse, aged five, and his brother, Jenson, aged three, were burnt to death in a fire that engulfed their apartment in the Oluwatuyi area of Akure, Ondo State, on Wednesday.
According to eyewitnesses, the children were allegedly locked inside their home by their mother, Mrs Deborah Oluwaranakinse, who had stepped out to buy food.
Tragically, the fire broke out in her absence, reducing the apartment to ashes and claiming the lives of the two boys.
“When the fire started, the neighbours around made efforts to put it out and rescue the kids, but their efforts were unsuccessful,” an eyewitness recounted.
“People called the state fire service, but by the time they arrived, things had gone out of hand. The kids had died.”
Another witness said the fire erupted suddenly, with no clear cause identified at the time of reporting.
Despite desperate attempts by neighbours to extinguish the flames and save the children, the inferno proved relentless.
The charred remains of the children were later evacuated and deposited at the morgue of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital in Akure.

Oyo State governor, Engineer ‘Seyi Makinde says Nigerians do not want a one-party system.
He said this during a visit by the National Working Committee members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to commiserate with the governor on the death of 35 children during a stampede and to present the new National Secretary of the party, Rt. Hon. SKE Udeh-Okoye, to him.
Governor Makinde said Nigerians want a situation where they would be able to kick out non-performing leaders, maintaining that this would only be possible if there are alternatives.
The governor said, “The leaders in the party and members of the NWC came to commiserate with us on the unfortunate incident that happened towards the end of last year. Because of that, I cancelled my birthday celebration. Even though belated, they still felt they should come and wish me well at the beginning of a New Year.
“Yes, this New Year has given us the opportunity to talk about happenings within our party, especially the issues surrounding the rule of law.
“There is a court pronouncement on the issue of the National Secretary. My position was clear from day one and I will always follow the rule of law. This is the new National Secretary by court pronouncement. I said without mincing words that we will stay on the side of the law.
“We deliberated a little bit on what are the things ahead of us. 2025 is going to be a pivotal year for us as a party. “Four years ago, I was the secretary of the Convention Planning Committee that midwived this NWC, and four years after, we have to conduct the exercise again.
“We do know that Nigerians are waiting for the PDP to get its acts together. You can see how united the members of the NWC of our party are. There is no faction and this will give a headache to some people.
“Well, this is the beginning of a lot of good things to come in terms of party administration and commitment. I heard good things from these leaders; things that I was not even thinking deeply about. “One of them said to us that there should not be any sacrifice that would be too big to make in the interest of our party and the interest of Nigerians. We are looking forward to not a one-party state.
Nigerians don’t want a one-party state. They want alternatives. They want to be able to kick people out if they are not delivering on their promises. “So, there is commitment to ensure that Nigeria does not slide into a one-party state.”
Earlier, speaking on behalf of the NWC members, the new National Secretary of the PDP, Udeh-Okoye, commiserated with the government and people of Oyo State on the unfortunate stampede that resulted in death.

Oyo State governor, Engineeer ‘Seyi Makinde says the death of some children in a stampede at a private funfare held in Ibadan, the state capital, was sobering and could have been avoided if due diligence had been done by the organisers.
The governor stated when he received leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-East geopolitical zone, who paid him a visit to condole with him over the deaths.
Governor Makinde declared that apart from cancelling a birthday lecture planned in his honour in Ebonyi State, he had decided to cancel his birthday party on 25th of December to honour the departed souls.
The governor appreciated the South-East PDP leaders led by the chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees and former Senate President, Dr Adolphus Wabara, for their show of love and for letting the residents of Oyo State know that “they are not alone in these sad times.”
Those in the South-East PDP delegation also include a former governor of Ebonyi State, Dr Sam Egwu; a former National Secretary of the PDP, Senator Ben Obi; a former National Woman Leader of the PDP, Iyom Josephine Anenih; new National Secretary of the PDP, Chief SKE Udeokoye; PDP National Vice Chairman (South-East), Chief Ali Odefa; Chief Obasi Elebi and the Ebonyi State PDP chairman, Chief Onyema Nwele.
The governor said: “We flew into Abuja and planned to be on our way to Ebonyi, when the sad event started unfolding on Wednesday. First, we had to secure the place. I sent the security people in there. “The most painful part for me was that this incident could have been avoided altogether and the deceased are innocent children.
“By the time I got to Abuja and I got the full report, I said there was no way we could go on to Ebonyi. But I appreciate all the arrangements and commitment that we were able to see, from my able leader and former National Secretary, Senator Ben Obi.
“The love from the South-East is not lost on me and the people of Oyo State. I really want to say thank you for the love. You are the first set of leaders that came physically to commiserate with the Government and the people of Oyo State for that unfortunate incident.
“Yes, some people have called, reached out but in terms of physical presence, you are the first. That will not be lost on the people of Oyo State.
“This is not a day for long speeches; it is a day that is really sobering for me personally. Not only did I cancel the event in Ebonyi, I told everyone that I would stay indoors on my birthday. There is no party; I have sent the message out. “It has been a difficult year, really. Early in the year, we had the Bodija explosion. We managed through quite a bit. But we are strengthened by the show of support for us, to let us know that we are not alone in facing all of these.
“So, on behalf of the government and the people of Oyo State, we want to appreciate you for coming to commiserate with us and to let us know we are not alone.”
Earlier, Dr Wabara, expressed the condolences of the South-East PDP to Governor Makinde, noting that the governor is much loved in the South-East and the PDP leaders have chosen to visit to commiserate with him and the people of the state.
Dr Waraba however advised the new National Secretary to be firm and to provide leadership, saying: “For the newly-minted PDP National Secretary, I wrote to the BOT that fair is fair and we also said we should respect whatever it is that the South-East would love to have. I am glad that the court has made its pronouncement. That is the last hope of the common man. Congratulations.

Police authorities in Anambra have recovered three more bodies from a boat accident involving a movie cast.
Nollywood star, Junior Pope Odonwodo was part of the crew that drowned in the boat mishap on Wednesday.
While some crew members were yet to be found following the boat tragedy, the spokesperson of the Anambra Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga said three more bodies of members of the movie cast have been recovered.
“Marine Police of Anambra State Command has recovered bodies of the three remaining victims of the unfortunate boat accident involving a movie cast,” he said in a Friday statement.
“Two of the bodies were recovered yesterday 11th April, 2024 while the last was washed in by the tide this morning.”
The bodies have been deposited at a morgue in Asaba, Delta State while authorities of the guild of actors have also been informed about the recovery.
The spokesman quoted the state’s Police Commissioner, Aderemi Adeoye as advising water commuters to be safety conscious while in transit.
According to the commissioner, the Police are fast-tracking the investigation into the accident.
However, The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has banned the shooting of movies in riverine areas and also suspended filmmaker, Adanma Luke following the death of actor Junior Pope Odonwodo.
Junior Pope was among the persons who drowned while returning from a shoot for a movie called “Another Side of Life” which was being produced by Adanma.
Their boat capsized around Cable Point at the waterside of River Niger in Asaba, Delta State.
While there were initial claims that Junior Pope was revived, the AGN said the actor is dead, prompting its suspension of shoots involving riverine areas and boat rides.
“The leadership of the Guild has taken the following decisions: (1) All films that involve riverine areas and boat riding are at this moment suspended indefinitely, (2) no shoot on all locations Nationwide on Thursday, 11 April 2024, ” the AGN president Emeka Rollas said in a statement on Thursday.
“(3)The film titled ‘Another Side of Life’ is suspended indefinitely (4) No actor is allowed to work with Adamma Luke as a producer till further notice. (5) While we keep searching for the bodies of the remaining persons, may their souls rest in peace.”
The move is coming after the AGN president said the actor was alive after initially confirming Junior Pope’s death. But hours later, he deleted the post on his Instagram handle, posting another one where he said reconfirmed the actor’s death.
“It’s so so sad that our joy was shortlived. My first post was out of excitement when we noticed his tingling fingers. Two notable hospitals tried their best to revive him but to no avail. God knows the best,” he said on his Instagram handle.
“We finally lost him. Mr Friday’s corpse has been identified but three other corpses are yet to be found.”
A stray dog foraging for food has retrieved an abandoned baby boy in a forest in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The stray dog was said to have carried the infant across a busy road and kept him in a public glare, apparently for passersby to pick up for rehabilitation.
The baby was said to have been found by the dog in a plastic bag in which he was abandoned in the forest. The baby who was said to be stable might have been abandoned in the forest for about two days before the dog discovered him.
Corroborating the story in a trending video online, some women believed to be local midwives were seen cleaning the baby while condemning the perpetrators of the heinous crime.
The women and a male in the video wondered how someone would carry a baby for nine months, only to throw such a child away after delivery.
While thanking God for saving the baby from being devoured by animals, they implored perpetrators of such acts to hand over babies to people to take care of instead of throwing them away.
The police are yet to comment on the matter as of now. Calls put across to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Anambra Tochukwu Ikenga did not go through.
Many may not know, but beyond the beautiful and charming looks of some women are tales of encounters they felt not too comfortable to share.
One of them is sexual harassment. Quietly, many female workers are sexually harassed in their places of work.
Unfortunately, due to customs and traditions among other factors, many have suffered in silence nursing the wounds alone.
Such reasons may include fear of losing their jobs and the stigma of reporting the acts may have on their lives.
At an automobile assembly plant in the United States, four women on behalf of other female workers filed a lawsuit saying sexual harassment at the plant was out of control.
According to them, supervisors and co-workers sexually harassed them.
In Ibadan, Radio Nigeria also caught up with some women who had experienced such;
Woman 1: “I had an experience with a senior officer who called me into his office. He tried to make some moves. He wanted to touch me and I had to stop him. Since that day, I avoided any form of intimacy between us”. Woman 2: “When the person who was harassing me was taking it too far, I had to tell someone but when no step was taken, I had to quit”. Woman 3: “When I was in search of a job, there was this company I went to. The manager there was very funny, telling me to use what I have to get what I wanted. I had to leave the company because I knew even if I gave him what he wanted, he would do the same thing to another girl coming”.

A Psychologist, Dr. Bayo Olagoke, identified stress, depression and suicidal thoughts as some of the psychological effects of sexual harassment on women.
Dr. Olagoke advised female workers to be hardworking, self-confident and avoid soliciting unnecessary favours from their male colleagues.
He equally, enjoined employers of labour to include in their staff regulation handbooks penalties for members of staff who indulge in sexual harassment.
A legal practitioner, Mr Tayo Salami pointed out that victims of sexual harassment must be armed with enough evidence against culprits.
Mr Salami explained that in some cases, the culprits and the victims could have been in a love relationship before they parted ways.
The legal practitioner called on civil societies to intensify campaigns on the rights of women and the need for them to know that when convicted, those guilty of the offence would be sentenced to a jail term of 2 years.
