Tragedy struck the Adeniran family in the Adewolo, Ayegun Oleyo Area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, when a woman, Nafisat Adeniran, reportedly slumped and died, while trying to separate her teenage son from a fight with neighbourhood boys.

Her 16-year-old son, Fawas, said the incident began when two boys allegedly threw stones that hit his leg, while he, his mother and younger brother, were heading to deliver some jewelries to a customer,

Angered by the act and getting no response when he questioned them, Fawas said he cursed the boys before leaving the scene.

Fawas explained further that the same boys later confronted him in front of their house over the curse, leading to an argument that degenerated into a physical attack.

He claimed the boys held him down and beat him up while his mother tried to intervene.

However, one of the boys involved, 15-year-old Abeeb Abdulfatai, gave a different account, saying he was chasing goats and throwing stones, when Fawas accused him and cursed that whoever threw the stones would be struck dead by Ogun.

Abeeb said he later confronted Fawas, which led to the fight in the presence of his mother, before she passed away.

The husband of the deceased, Mr Taofeek Adeniran, who was in serious grief, said his wife had called him barely five minutes earlier, asking him to come home to eat, before the tragic incident occurred.

Moments after the heated exchange, Mrs Adeniran reportedly slumped and died.

The case was reported  at Challenge Police Division of The Nigeria Police and later transferred to Iyaganku station, for further investigation.

Reacting to the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police, Oyo State Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr Olayinka Ayanlade, said he was yet to be briefed on the case.

More facts have unveiled the tragic details of last Friday’s stray elephant attack in the Oke Ogun Area of Oyo State, with affected residents now counting their losses.

Radio Nigeria gathered that the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, VGN, is currently mourning the loss of one of its members, Alhaji Muhammad Binge, who died when the animal attacked him while he was on surveillance duty.

The Commander of the VGN Oyo State Command, Comrade Sunday Olajide, confirmed that the late vigilante received burial at the exact spot of the attack, following tradition.

A senior member of the VGN in Itesiwaju Local Government Area, Mr Olami Ogundayo, explained that the elephant also killed two other persons in the Oke Oyan Area of the local government.

After those deaths, some members of the community mobilized and killed the animal to prevent further casualties.

However, reacting to the incident, the Controller of Parks at the Old Oyo National Park, Mr Teslim Kareem, said he could not immediately say much about the incident until the return of his men, whom he had sent on a fact-finding mission.

He added that he was also awaiting an official statement from the park’s headquarters in Abuja.

Conflicting reports about the tragedy by some media organizations (not Radio Nigeria) over the weekend had raised doubts about the authentic number of lives lost in the incident, as previously recalled.

….The ordeal of a youth struggling to survive

By Olaitan Oye-Adeitan

It was on a Saturday afternoon, as he was approaching, I noticed he wasn’t looking happy.

Coming closer, he looked so pale with his palms appearing like there’s no blood.

What happened to you? I asked?

“I went to donate blood and have not been feeling good”, he responded, expressing weakness.

But why did you? I asked.

“Because I needed money to take care of myself. It hasn’t been that easy. I have been going days without food. It’s really eating me up” he explained.

Oh my goodness! I exclaimed.

My PCV was checked before my blood was taken and it was 43 percent. But after the donation, it dropped to 25%.

I couldn’t contain my shock, “25percent and you are still standing”!

How much were you given?

He answered, “Four thousand naira and i used it to buy food and few other personal needs”

This is the pathetic ordeal of Uchenna, (not real name), a male youth in his early twenties. His story hit me like a ton of bricks.

He is an orphan and the first child (twin) of the seven children of his late parents.

He is tall, well built, intelligent, eloquent, very sound and full of potentials but life seems not to be smiling at him at all.

Since the demise of his parents, him  and his siblings had really not found life funny at all.

He has been shouldering the weight of his family since his parents passed away, doing all kinds of menial jobs just to put food on the table. But at the cost of his health, his education, his future, all on the line.

Uchenna is a hidden greatness that needs support to come to birth.

Four years ago, he cleared his SSCE examination with good grades, got two admissions in reputable Universities in Nigeria but couldn’t pursue his academic goal due to financial constraints.

One remarkable thing about Uche is that he is very hardworking and doesn’t mind any job as long as it is lawful.

However, he has been in a long search for a job that could assist him to cater not only for his immediate needs but to further his education and assist his siblings but hasn’t secured one.

Uchenna is slipping through the cracks and he has a genuine case that needs urgent help of  well spirited people or individuals who could just assist him to find his bearing in life and fulfill his destiny.

Could you be an answer to change this narrative?

Oyo State Government has approved the sum of ₦4.5 billion as financial support to the survivors and victims of the Bodija explosion, which occurred on January 16, 2024.

This decision was taken at the Executive Council meeting.

According to the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, this is apart from the over ₦200 million the State Government had expended on accommodation, feeding, hospital and security bills following the tragic incident.

Also the Council approved the recommendation of the 10-man committee to revoke the Title of two properties off Adeyi Avenue, scene of the explosion, in the overall interest of the public and that the Government should build a monument on the location of the revoked land in memory of the victims of the tragedy.

The Council frowned at the spate of disinformation, half-truths and mischievous lies being peddled by persons purportedly representing the residents on the role which the state government has played in the Bodija explosion saga.

Council said such insinuations are unfair and mischievous and the Government would not be discouraged in taking its time to do what is just for her citizens.

Prince Oyelade said some beneficiaries are engaged in family disputes, which require the painstaking intervention of the 10-man committee.

The government would also return to the owners, other properties adjoining ground zero to rebuild their homes at the advice of government-paid Structural Engineers.

According to the Commissioner, the government will, through the Ministry of Justice, ensure effective prosecution of the suspects so far arraigned in court, while efforts are being intensified to apprehend other suspects linked to the case but at large.

The Governor said he took the decision to discourage Ministerial complacency and to assure the people that he plans to end the tenure of his administration in 2027 with the same zeal with which he started in 2019.

“Besides that, we will send all of them to Duchess International Hospital in Ikeja for free medical examination and treatment.

“While we implore the Nigerian Embassy in Cote D’Ivoire to assemble them and reach out to us, we equally call on the Federal Government to take charge of their education while reuniting them with their families.”

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, has called on students to prioritize their safety at all times.

The Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, made the call in a statement made available to newsmen, against the backdrop of a student of the institution, who was electrocuted last weekend.

Mr Olanrewaju said the university condoled with the bereaved family and friends of the deceased.

The university, however, expressed concern over the state of electrical infrastructure in off-campus hostels, especially during this rainy season.

According to a witness, “the student retrieved the ball and tossed it back to his teammates before attempting to scale the fence separating the two hostels. In the process, he reportedly came in contact with a high-tension cable that had been brought down by a rainstorm the previous day.”

“He got electrocuted the moment he touched it. His friends used a stick to detach him from the wire and rushed him to a hospital in Ipetumodu, but doctors there confirmed him dead’”, the witness added.

It would be recalled that last Saturday evening, a student of the Obafemi Awolowo University’s Distance Learning Centre was electrocuted while attempting to retrieve a football from a nearby compound, at a private hostel along the Moro/Ife Road in Ile Ife.
