On Wednesday, Australian authorities took legal action against a 39-year-old resident of suburban Sydney, accusing him of orchestrating a massive scam involving 17 million text messages—one for nearly every adult in the country.

The unnamed individual stands accused of being the sole perpetrator behind the surge of scam texts that have been inundating mobile phone users nationwide.

New South Wales police revealed that the deceptive messages, often posing as communications from Australia Post or toll road operators, were distributed through the utilization of SIM boxes.

These devices can dispatch tens of thousands of messages daily.

Charged with employing networked equipment to commit a serious offense, the man was subsequently granted bail.

Jason Smith, the commander of the police Cybercrime Squad, emphasized the prevalence of SMS phishing as a widely adopted tactic by scammers seeking to extract banking and other personal information from unsuspecting victims.

Smith explained that SIM boxes are capable of accommodating over 250 active SIM cards, enabling the transmission of up to 150,000 messages per day, each containing phishing lures for various scams.
