The family must rise to the responsibility of restoring and preserving Yoruba cultural heritage with a view to combating the threats confronting the society.

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo stated this at the maiden global Yoruba history and heritage celebration held at June 12 Cultural centre, Kuto Abeokuta.

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo said restoring of Yoruba cultural values required the rigorous effort of the family and other stakeholders in view of the uniqueness in the people’s cultural heritage which encompassed every aspect of their lives.

The former President maintained that the uniqueness in various ways of identity of the Yoruba people, including language, names, mode of dressing, tribal mark, greetings, moral training, religions and festival would always keep them check from engaging in crimes and social vices.

Also, the Alake of Egba Land, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo represented by the Apena of Egba Land, Chief Alani Bankole who highlighted the areas of expertise of the people to include some artistic work and agriculture called on the young to invest in agriculture as part of efforts to promote industriousness and boost food production.

Similarly, the Olowu of Owu kingdom, Oba Saka Matemilola, who called on stakeholders to protect Yoruba cultural heritage from going into extinction said the rich potential in Art and crafts should be explored by the youths to earn a living.

Earlier, the convener of the programme and a legal practitioner, Mr Kehinde Somoye represented by Dr Abdultaofeek Durojaye had explained that the programme was put together to rescue Yoruba art and cultural heritage from going into extinction.

He called on stakeholders including traditional rulers, parents and other custodians of culture to promote the Yoruba cultural heritage to enhance tourism and promote the socio-economic development of the country.
