Medical Experts have warned against child marriage to avoid suffering from Obstetric Fistula. 

The experts gave  the warning to mark this year’s International Day to End Obstetric Fistula in Ibadan. 

A Senior Registrar at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Dr Opeyemi Adedeji said predisposing factors of Obstetric Fistula was as a result of untimely pregnancy occasioned by child marriage.

Dr Adedeji highlighed the common cause of the condition to include pronged labour at childbirth and complicated surgical operations leading to voluntary leakage of urine or feaces between the vagina and rectum.

He advised expectant mothers irrespective of age to visit health centers for antenatal care to avoid complications.

Similarly, a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, Dr Olufemi Aworinde while speaking on this year’s theme “Breaking the Cycle, Preventing Fistula World Wide,” advocated  reorientation against child marriage and pregnancy.

Dr Aworinde who called on government to ease the struggles of Obstetric Fistula patients through affordable healthcare, emphasized the need for recruitment of specialized healthcare personnel at the grassroots.
