The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, has issued a fresh 10-day ultimatum to the federal government and other relevant authorities, warning of an imminent nationwide strike if its outstanding demands are not addressed.

The resolution is contained in a communiqué signed by NARD President, Dr. Tope Osundara; General Secretary, Dr. Oluwasola Odunbaku; and Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr. Omoha Amobi, following an Extraordinary National Executive Council, E-NEC meeting held virtually on Sunday.

The association recalled that, it had in July given a three-week ultimatum before extending the deadline by another three weeks to allow for further dialogue with stakeholders.

However, it expressed disappointment that the government has yet to fulfill its promises.

According to NARD, many resident doctors are still unpaid for their 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, MRTF.

It also decried the failure to settle five months’ arrears from the 25–35 per cent Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, CONMESS, review, along with other longstanding salary arrears.

The doctors further condemned the non-payment of the 2024 Accoutrement Allowance, as well as what they described as the “unjust downgrading” of membership certificates of the West African Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN.

They also faulted the persistent delay in issuing certificates to successful candidates by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, NPMCN.

On state-level issues, NARD criticized the Kaduna State Government for failing to honour agreements with members at Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, despite signed Memoranda of Understanding.

I’mIt also accused the Oyo State Government of neglecting the welfare concerns of doctors at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomosho, where an indefinite strike is ongoing.

While commending states that have paid the 2025 MRTF, the E-NEC demanded immediate action from the Federal Government and state governors.

Among its key demands were immediate payment of the 2025 MRTF to all eligible resident doctors; Settlement of outstanding five months’ arrears of CONMESS and other salary backlogs; Payment of the 2024 Accoutrement Allowance and commencement of specialist allowance payments to all doctors.
Others are the restoration of recognition for the West African postgraduate membership certificates by the MDCN, prompt issuance of membership certificates by the NPMCN and implementation of the 2024 CONMESS in Kaduna State and resolution of welfare concerns in Oyo State.

The communiqué emphasizes that all state governors must prioritize the welfare of doctors to curb emigration and ensure industrial harmony in the health sector.

The E-NEC extends the ultimatum by a final 10 days to all relevant government agencies to meet these demands. Failure to do so by Wednesday, September 10, 2025, will leave us with no option but to embark on a nationwide strike,” the association warned.

The Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP), Oyo State Council, wants the management of Broadcasting Corporation Oyo State, BCOS, and some tertiary institutions to implement the directive by the state government on an upward review of pensions.

National Secretary, Nigeria Union of Pensioners NUP, Mr Olusegun Abatan made the call during a press briefing held at the pensioners’ building, Agbarigo Onireke, Ibadan.

Mr Abatan explained that despite the five-month upward review of pensioners’ salaries by Governor Seyi Makinde, some pensioners in institutions like LAUTECH, Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, and others are yet to receive their payments due to the refusal of the affected institutions to comply with the directive of the state government.

While appreciating the state government for making Oyo State pensioners the highest paid in the country, Mr Abatan called on the government to compel the managements of these institutions to pay their pensioners without further delay, as failure to do so would force them to the streets.

Also, in his contribution, former Labour Leader, Oyo State, Mr Waheed Olojede explained that several letters have been written to the affected managements with no response.

While reacting, the Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Oyo State Council, Mr Kayode Martins said the harmonious atmosphere in the state would not be compromised, urging all the affected management to do the needful without delay.

In his submission, the NUP Chairman in Oyo state, Mr James Osuntade, assured that the welfare of all pensioners in Oyo would be prioritised.

A bill to change the current status of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH Ogbomoso from a technical institution to a conventional university has scaled second reading in the Oyo State House of Assembly .

This was sequel to the reading of a letter from Governor Seyi Makinde by the Speaker, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin requesting for the changing of the status of the university.

Deliberating on the bill during plenary, Lawmaker representing Ogbomoso North State Constituency, Mrs Olawunmi Oladeji solicited the speedy passage of the bill which she said would provide necessary legal framework for the institution.

Mrs. Oladeji also noted that the name of the host town, Ogbomoso, should be retained despite making the institution a multi-campus school.

She argued that the name should be written as Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomoso rather than Ladoke Akintola University that the executive recommended.

Mrs Oladeji cited examples of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and University of Nigeria, Nsukka as some of the Nigerian Conventional Universities that bears their names with their host communities.

Other lawmakers including Mr Sanjo Adedoyin, Ogbomoso South, Mr Isiaka Kazeem, Oyo East/West, Mr Bamidele Adeola (Iseyin) and Mr Simeon Oyeleke (Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere) in their contributions commended Governor Seyi Makinde for the successes recorded on LAUTECH, Ogbomoso.

According to them, “it was this administration that secured full ownership of the University from Osun state and now it is also seeking to make it a conventional institution”.

Reacting, Speaker, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin said the bill was another effort by the present administration to reposition university education in Oyo State.

Mr Ogundoyin stated that Governor Seyi Makinde had continued to demonstrate his love and passion for all round quality education in the state adding that making LAUTECH a regular university will give more Oyo students and those of their colleagues outside the state the opportunity of pursuing any educational career of their choice in the institution.

“The bill has scaled second reading. We are working on it to ensure that our students and others like them have the opportunity of studying any course they like. This time around, they will not be restricted to technical education or courses alone. This shows how futuristic and forward looking our Governor is.” Oyo Speaker said.

The bill tagged Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH Ogbomoso (Amendment) Law, 2022 will enable the institution to offer courses in humanities and other fields of study as approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) while it will also encourage and promote scholarship and conduct research in various fields of learning.

It further seeks to change and amend the name of the university to Ladoke Akintola University, (LAU)

The amendment will equally allow the University to make provision for the establishment of a suitable pension scheme for all its staff

A member of the House of Representatives representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency, Oyo State, Mr. Shina Peller, says his three years at the green chamber has been full of experiences and experiments through which he was able to know the needs of the people at the grassroot.

Peller stated this while speaking as a guest lecturer at the 2021 End of the Year Party of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, (LAUTECH) Alumni Association, in Ibadan.

Peller posited that in the last three years, he had realized that his tentacles had to go beyond his federal constituency, hence the decision to contest for the Oyo North Senatorial district seat, come 2023.

“The benefit of having an alumnus of LAUTECH representing a senatorial district where the University resides can never be overemphasized. It is on that note that I feel very safe in the midst of my people to declare my intention to contest for Oyo North Senatorial District seat come 2023.”

The Federal Lawmaker called on the Alumni associations of various institutions of learning in the country to leverage on their potentiality, influence and exposure in contributing their quota towards revamping the nation’s educational sector.

Peller observed that members of the Alumni associations were critical stakeholders of their various institutions who were key players in various sectors of the economy and whose influence, exposure and experience will be very useful in repositioning the nation’s educational sector for better.

He said, “Alumni associations are very special because their members come from various segments of the industry; and this makes them well-positioned to make positive changes in our degraded education sector. They are capable of drawing from different fields of knowledge to achieve the needed changes we need in our educational sector.”

Explaining some of the ways Alumni associations can help make positive impacts in the educational sector, Peller said, “Some members of alumni associations who are wealthy individuals can help put their financial resources together to fix the dilapidated infrastructures in their various alma mater.”

In addition, the federal legislator explained that members of alumni associations can establish scholarships, grants and endowments that will be greatly beneficial to students who have intellectual talents, but are financially handicapped. He made reference to the endowment fund he made available to the Chemical Engineering Department of LAUTECH for best graduating students, and urged others to follow suit.

In the same vein, Peller stated that alumni associations can also make positive impacts in the nation’s educational sector by mentoring the future alumni and equipping them with necessary skills.
