The Ogun State Muslim Council, OMC, wants the commitment of Nigerians in leadership positions to address issues affecting the general well-being of citizens.
Members of the umbrella body of Muslims in the state made the call at their general meeting in Ijebu Ode, after deliberations on matters relating to Islam, Ogun State and national development.
In a communique signed by the Secretary-General, Alhaji Kamaldeen Akintunde, the Council emphasized the need for caution by the National Assembly and other relevant stakeholders involved in the efforts to reform and harmonise multiple taxes in the country, noting that all interests must be duly protected in the passage and implementation of the proposed bill.
The Ogun State Muslim Council also announced plans to contribute towards developing a strategic document on returning out-of-school children to active formal education in support of the federal government’s efforts, through the National Commission on Al-Majiri and Out of School Children Education.
The Council applauded Governor Dapo Abiodun for allocating the highest percentage of the state’s proposed budget to education and devoting a substantial amount to capital expenditure, urging the state House of Assembly to ensure due diligence in considering the bill and subsequent passage into law.
On local government administration, the Muslim group appealed to stakeholders to ensure full implementation of Local Government Autonomy and called on the council chairmen to ensure balanced consideration of different religions, while prioritizing fairness, equity and quality representation of all interests.
The Islamic group advised the State Independent Electoral Commission, OGSIEC to improve on the grey areas identified by stakeholders on its performance during the recent council polls, to make future elections more acceptable and equally encouraged the Muslims to be active participants in the process of promoting good governance in the State and the country.
