By Omolara Adasofunjo

Ogun State House of Assembly, OGHA, has passed a resolution requesting the State Ministry of Transportation and that of Environment to work with other relevant agencies on enforcing the laws regulating the movement and activities of trailer drivers in compliance with road safety regulations.

The measure, according to the state lawmakers during a plenary presided over by the Speaker, Mr Oludaisi Elemide would help to prevent avoidable road accidents leading to loss of lives and properties in the state.

The resolution titled: “Urgent need to address the rising incident of trailer-related accidents on roads across the State” as sponsored by Mr Wasiu Ayodele and seconded by Mr Babatunde Tella was unanimously supported by all the lawmakers.

Mr Ayodele had emphasized the need for stakeholders to rise to the challenge of ensuring that trailers and other heavy-duty vehicles adhered to the highest safety standards while passing through State roads, pointing out that the recklessness of some trailer drivers, coupled with the negligence by relevant enforcement agencies, had further exacerbated the risk faced by road users and communities along major highways in the state.

He maintained that many road crashes had been traced to human errors such as poor vehicle maintenance, the use of underage or unqualified drivers, improper loading practices and inadequate enforcement of road safety regulations, urging the traffic management agencies to intensify the enforcement of existing laws to punish violators, especially drivers of trailers and heavy-duty vehicles.

Other members, including Mr Babatunde Tella and Mr Olusegun Odunuga, said it was necessary to address the increasing incidents of trailer-related road crashes saying the development, especially among the trucks transporting hazardous materials such as petrol, had continued to pose a grave threat to the safety of the people, properties and the environment.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the Assembly also called for even distribution of infrastructural projects across the state while commending the state government for the massive road intervention in Ifo 2, State Constituency, especially along Alagbole- Akute, Ojodu and Hacules roads among other infrastructural projects in the area as highlighted by the member representing the area, Mr Fatiu Salami.
