Relevant authorities in the Nigerian education sector have been urged to engage more youths in vocational and technical education to raise the needed professionals for the nation to tackle the effects of global industrial challenges.
A frontline businessman and humanitarian, Alhaji Ibraheem Egungbohun made the call at the 6th combined convocation of the Ogun State Institute of Technology, OGITECH, Igbesa, in Ado Odo Ota Council Area, after his conferment with the Institute’s Fellowship Award.
Alhaji Egungbohun, popularly known as IBD also advocated increased funding and investments to make vocational and technical education attractive to the youths as part of efforts to boost employment opportunities in the country.
Represented by his wife, Omolara, Alhaji Egungbohun maintained that prioritizing vocational and Technical education would make the youth self-reliant and enable them to contribute actively to nation-building.
He affirmed“It is only through vocational and technical education that the youth can get entrepreneurial knowledge to stand and work on their own. The government should then make it more enticing to youths. It is the way forward for this country to end this youthful restfulness.”
Chief Egungbohun also encouraged capable individuals and corporate organisations to support the mono-technic in funding the mass production of the Electric vehicle recently unveiled by the Institute to further boost the country’s growing economy.
The frontline businessman commended the Ogun State government for placing a high premium on Education, particularly the current revitalisation and rehabilitation of technical colleges across the state among other interventions.
He advocated the need to establish functional skills acquisition centres for the nation’s young graduates to learn other vocations in addition to their degrees, noting that such moves would help to reduce over-dependence on white-collar jobs among Nigerian youths
While emphasizing that the government alone could not fund education, Alhaji Egungbohun appealed to well-meaning individuals and corporate bodies to adopt at least one school each in the state and invest their resources to reposition such schools for greatness.
He appreciated the Rector and other management of Ogun State Institute of Technology Igbesa for bestowing on him the highest honour of the school and promised to do more to uplift the less privileged in society.
