By Omolara Adasofunjo

The Ogun State House of Assembly has called on the state government, the National Assembly, and the Inspector-General of Police to urgently address the increasing number of police checkpoints along border roads and other parts of the state, particularly the Owode–Ijiroko road in Ipokia Local Government Area.

The resolution followed a motion titled urgent call for the reduction of multiple police check points along Idiroko -Owode road in Ipokia Local Government Area, moved by the lawmaker representing Ipokia/Idiroko State Constituency, Mr Adebisi Oyedele.

Opening the debate, Mr Oyedele decried the presence of over 52 police checkpoints on a 20-kilometre stretch of road, describing it as excessive and a source of constant extortion, harassment, and bribery.

The lawmaker noted that the situation recently led to a five-day strike by commercial drivers, causing hardship for residents.

He urged the House to seek immediate intervention from the relevant authorities including the state Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, and the Inspector-General of Police, through the State Commissioner of Police to ensure immediate solution.

He also called for the resolution to be transmitted as a petition to the National Assembly and the National Security Adviser.

Other lawmakers, including the Deputy Speaker, Mrs  Bolanle Ajayi; Mr  Lukman Adeleye; Mr Adegoke Adeyanju; and Mr Waliu Owode, supported the motion, stating that the challenge of multiple police checkpoints affected commuters across several  parts of the state.

The Speaker , Mr Oludaisi Elemide, who presided over the sitting, directed that copies of the resolution be forwarded to Governor Dapo Abiodun, the Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Inspector-General of Police, and the National Security Adviser for necessary action.
