The coronation of three high chiefs in Ibadan to the position of monarchs, as scheduled at the premises of ancient Mapo Hall, despite the absence of the elevated kings has been done.

The elevated kings included; Oba Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin, Ekerin Balogun of Ibadan, Oba Oyekola Babalola, Ekarun Olubadan of Ibadan, and Oba Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, Ekarun Balogun of IbadaIbadan.

Recalled that the palace Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja had earlier issued a statement that the three concerned High Chiefs due to be coronated have formally informed the Olubadan  that they would be unavailable, and have, therefore, asked for postponement.

According to the statement, the palace had informed the state  government through the Ministry of local government and Chieftaincy matters.

Elevating the monarch, Governor Seyi Makinde who spoke through the Deputy Governor, Chief Bayo Lawal said the coronation became imperative in order not to create vacuum in the Ibadan chieftaincy law.

Governor Makinde maintained that whether the concerned monarchs were present or not, their elevation is sacrosanct under the extant laws.

He said “There are moments in the lives of people when history, culture, and governance converge to produce an enduring legacy. Today is one of such moments.“

“We are not merely gathered to witness a ceremonial rite; we are here to affirm a system that has, for generations, provided structure, order, and identity to Ibadanland.“

“The elevation of these High Chiefs and their subsequent conferment with beaded crowns speak to a tradition that evolves without losing its essence,“ the governor said.

“This ceremony goes beyond formality; it represents a deliberate affirmation of our commitment as a government to uphold the rule of law while preserving the dignity and relevance of our traditional institutions.“

“The approval of this conferment is firmly anchored in the Chiefs Law of Oyo State and guided by the established customs of Ibadanland.“

“In line with the provisions of the law, the Executive Governor is vested with the authority to confer beaded crowns on elevated High Chiefs in Ibadanland, hence, this ceremony is being duly conducted.”

He explained that the decision to proceed was necessary to maintain the integrity of the traditional system.

“This step has become necessary to avoid creating a vacuum or distorting the well-structured arrangement of the Ibadan traditional system,” he added.

“The traditional institution remains a vital pillar of our society, providing continuity, stability, and a sense of identity for our people,” he said.

“Our administration will continue to strengthen collaboration with traditional rulers as key partners in promoting peace, security, and sustainable development across the state.”

“To the newly crowned Obas, this honour is both symbolic and demanding. It places upon you a higher obligation to lead with wisdom, demonstrate integrity, and serve as custodians of unity within your respective domains.“

“Your conduct in office will not only define your reigns but will also shape the confidence reposed in the traditional system of Ibadanland as a whole.”

Speaking at the event, a member of the Olubadan in Council, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola who lauded governor Makinde on recognition of traditional institutions in the state, appreciated him for sustainability of the Ibadan traditional chieftaincy title.

Other Olubadan in Council present at coronation ceremony included Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, Oba Kola Adegbola, Oba Biodun Kola-Daisi, Oba Adebayo

Akande, Oba Biodun Azeez and Oba Isioye Dada.

Members of the traditional council in Oyo state were also present.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Local government and Chieftain Matters, Ademola Ojo, said the coronation is a reaffirmation of commitment to preserving the rich cultural heritage and time honoured tradition that defined the people.

While congratulating the new kings in absentia, Mr Ojo tasked them to uphold the tradition, promote unity and contribute significantly to the development of their domains.
