The Vice Chancellor, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile – Ife, Osun State, Professor Adebayo Bamire has explained that the refusal of the institution to approve the hosting of a former Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, for a lecture within the University premises was due to the short notice given the school authority for adequate preparation.
In a statement to clarify the circumstances surrounding the proposed lecture by the former presidential candidate, Professor Bamire said the University authorities were not duly informed of the status and calibre of the invited guest until a day before the scheduled programme.
The VC explained that a group within the students’ body had extended an invitation to the former Presidential Candidate and two-term Governor of Anambra State to deliver a lecture within the University premises without duly informing the school authorities.
Consequently, due to the short notice, the University authorities could not approve the use of Oduduwa Hall for the event as requested by the organisers.
The OAU VC emphasised that, events involving high-profile personalities required adequate notification to the University authorities to enable the institution to make necessary logistical and security arrangements, towards the safety of the guest, members of the University community and the public.
Professor Bamire noted that the institution remained committed to supporting intellectual engagements and hosting distinguished personalities, provided, due process was followed and adequate notice, given.
He stated that the decision was taken in adherence to established protocols governing the use of University facility and not in any way, a reflection of disregard for the person or status of Mr Obi.
The VC urged Members of the University community, students and the public to always comply with laid-down procedures in planning events within the Institution for the overall development of the University.
