The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has ordered an immediate shutdown of the campus, directing students to proceed on a three week mid-semester break.‎

The decision was approved by the university’s Senate after recent demonstrations by the students over the newly introduced transportation system.‎

According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, the decision became necessary after a series of protests by the students over the newly introduced transportation system.‎

Mr. Olanrewaju said the decision was aimed to restore order, ensure safety and create an enabling environment for meaningful dialogue with other stakeholders.

‎He assured the students that the management of the university would continue to engage relevant stakeholders to address the concerns raised and to ensure that normalcy is restored on campus.‎

The OAU PRO urged parents to take note of the development and ensure the necessary arrangements for their children.‎

The management enjoined students to remain law-abiding during the break and reteirated its commitment to the welfare of the students.

Students of the institution had earlier today staged a peaceful protest calling for an improvement of the campus transport system and other issues bordering on students’ welfare.‎‎‎

The students, who protested around the institution’s main gate in the early hours of the day‎‎, appealed to the school management to provide more buses to ease the stress being experienced by students and members of the academic community.‎‎‎
