The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has ordered an immediate shutdown of the campus, directing students to proceed on a three week mid-semester break.
The decision was approved by the university’s Senate after recent demonstrations by the students over the newly introduced transportation system.
According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, the decision became necessary after a series of protests by the students over the newly introduced transportation system.
Mr. Olanrewaju said the decision was aimed to restore order, ensure safety and create an enabling environment for meaningful dialogue with other stakeholders.
He assured the students that the management of the university would continue to engage relevant stakeholders to address the concerns raised and to ensure that normalcy is restored on campus.
The OAU PRO urged parents to take note of the development and ensure the necessary arrangements for their children.
The management enjoined students to remain law-abiding during the break and reteirated its commitment to the welfare of the students.
Students of the institution had earlier today staged a peaceful protest calling for an improvement of the campus transport system and other issues bordering on students’ welfare.
The students, who protested around the institution’s main gate in the early hours of the day, appealed to the school management to provide more buses to ease the stress being experienced by students and members of the academic community.
