The Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has launched an investigation into a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a driver along the Osogbo-Iwo Road in Osun State.
According to a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Abdulmalik Akintola, the incident occurred on Sunday while a patrol team was on routine duty to intercept suspected smuggled “Tokunbo” vehicles.
Reports from the scene in the Onibueja community indicate a tense encounter.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the Customs operatives were dressed in plainclothes and operating from a private vehicle, making it difficult for commuters to identify them.
The driver, reportedly fearing for his safety due to the uncertainty of their identity, attempted to manoeuvre past the roadblock, at which point the operatives allegedly opened fire.
The Command has identified the officers involved as Kolawole Suuti and Samuel Danjuma and has commenced a thorough audit of their conduct.
While commiserating with the family of the deceased, the NSC assured the public that the investigation would be transparent and that justice would be served without bias.
Another of our correspondents reports that the said Customs operatives have been arrested by the Osun State Command of the Nigerian Police Force.
