The National Assembly has formally rejected the Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s plan to resume legislative duties.

The assembly stated that her six-month suspension remains in force pending the outcome of a Court of Appeal case instituted against the Senate by Akpoti-Uduaghan.

In a letter issued by the Acting Clerk to the National Assembly, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, dated September 4, 2025, the Senate acknowledged Akpoti-Uduaghan’s notification of her intended return on September 4, the date she claimed marked the end of her suspension.

However, the Senate clarified that her suspension took effect on March 6, 2025, and emphasised that the matter is still subjudice.

The Senate insisted that no administrative action can be taken until the Court of Appeal delivers a verdict.

The letter stated that the Senate would only review her suspension after the court’s pronouncement.

“The matter remains sub judice, and until the judicial process is concluded, no administrative action can be taken to facilitate your resumption,” the letter read in parts.

PUNCH Online reports that Akpoti-Uduaghan, said she will return to the National Assembly later this month after completing her six-month suspension, according to her lawyer.

Speaking with The PUNCH in Abuja, her counsel, Victor Giwa, disclosed that the senator was on vacation in London but had already made plans to resume plenary alongside her colleagues when the Senate reconvenes on September 23.

Recall that Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended in March 2025 following a Senate resolution.Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended on March 6, 2025, following allegations of insubordination after she rejected a change of her designated seat during plenary.

The suspension, based on recommendations of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, also stripped her of aides, office privileges, and salaries.

The lawmaker had consistently argued that her ordeal was linked to her petition accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment, a claim the Senate dismissed.

She later challenged her suspension in court, securing a judgment she said favoured her recall.

The Oyo State House of Assembly, OYHA, has dismissed the petition written against the management of the Oyo State Pacesetter Transport Service (PTS) by the Association of Sacked Supervendors and Investors

The recommendation for the dismissal of the petition was contained in a report presented before the House during the plenary presided over by the Speaker, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin.

Reading the report, the Chairman, House Standing Committee on Transport, Mr. Babajide Adebayo, recommended that the petition be dismissed on the ground of lack of merit and substantive evidence.

Clarifying the incident that led to the petition written by the Chairman of the Association, Mr. Adebayo, disclosed that the Committee discovered illegal activities, collusion and fraud between the vendors and the drivers, which led to the termination of the appointment of the vendors.

Before the introduction and implementation of the card payment system to streamline transactions, the company faced leakages in revenue with average daily income reportedly around two hundred thousand naira (N200, 000:00). Following the introduction of the card payment system, the revenue increased to two million naira (N2,000,000:00) on the first day.

The engagement of vendors to monitor card reader machines and prohibit cash payments initially reduced the leakages. However, the vendors’ collusion with drivers on fare collection in cash led to further fraud, which prompted the company to terminate their contracts.”

Mr Adebayo said that the Committee also discovered that it is the Pacesetter Transport Service that is responsible for the payment of pensions and gratuities of its retirees and staff salaries.

The lawmaker maintained that it discovered that the activities of PTS are in line with guidelines of its operations and are subject to the approval of the state Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde.

He recommended that “the Executive Arm of Government be urged, through SAFER Program, to increase the subvention to the Pacesetter Transport Services (PTS) to support its subsidised service to citizens of the State.

“The petition submitted by Mr. Ibrahim Asiwaju Chairman, Association of Sacked Supervendors and Investors Oyo State Pacesetter Transport Services (PTS) to the House be dismissed for lacking in merit and credible evidence, the use of vendors system for revenue generation be terminated due to misconducts and the terms of engagement of contract staff be redefined regarding period of engagement and other conditions of service.

“The Management of Pacesetter Transport Services be urged to restructure its workforce and those who have been found guilty of misconduct and have been suspended more than twice. The Management of PTS be urged to design and implement a well-structured organogram that clearly defines reporting lines, job roles and responsibilities of all personnel. This will help eliminate ambiguity, prevent role duplication, and enhance overall productivity in the Pacesetter Transport Services; and the Pacesetter Transport Service (PTS) be urged to operate strictly in accordance with its conditions of service,” Mr. Babajide Adebayo said.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Tajudeen Abbas, has withdrawn a bill that aimed to make voting mandatory for all eligible Nigerians.

The bill, which he co-sponsored with Daniel Asama Ago, was meant to change the Electoral Act 2022 to encourage more people to vote and strengthen democracy.

In a statement on Monday, his media aide, Musa Krishi, said the decision to pull the bill came after speaking with many people and groups across the country.

From the start, the goal was to get more people involved in elections and strengthen democracy by boosting voter turnout,” the statement said.

The bill had passed second reading in the House on Thursday, but it sparked debate.

Some people supported it, saying it would lead to better voter turnout, while others said it would take away personal freedom and would be hard to enforce in a country as diverse as Nigeria.

Honourable Abbas, however, pointed out that countries like Australia, Belgium, and Brazil have high voter turnout thanks to compulsory voting, but stressed that Nigeria must find its way that suits its people.

“Lawmaking is about serving the people, and any new law must respect personal freedom,” Abbas said.

Instead of forcing people to vote, he said the government would now look for ways to encourage voting, especially among young people and first-time voters.

This withdrawal gives us time to talk more about how to build a culture of voluntary voting that supports our democracy and respects citizens’ rights,” he added.

The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has declared the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly illegal and unconstitutional.

In a judgment delivered on Wednesday, Justice Yetunde Pinheiro nullified the House’s proceedings and resolutions of January that led to Obasa’s ouster.

Obasa had filed a suit against the Lagos State House of Assembly and Mojisola Meranda, who was named the new Speaker, challenging the legality of the process that resulted in his removal.

Represented by his Counsel, Chief Afolabi Fashanu, Obasa argued that the decision to remove him was taken by 36 lawmakers while the Assembly was on recess and he was out of the country.

He maintained that the session was invalid, as it was convened without his authority or a formal delegation of power, in violation of the House’s procedures.

The suit was based on nine grounds, referencing relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Standing Orders of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The motion was presented during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin.

Presenting the motion, Mr Olalere noted that, the scavengers have been implicated in the theft and destruction of critical utilities, including streetlights, road signposts, electrical installations, railway tracks, and security barriers, posing significant risks to public safety and economic stability.

In their relentless search for scrap metal, these scavengers have been implicated in the theft and destruction of critical utilities, posing significant risks to public safety and economic stability,” the motion reads.

Mr Olalere further observed that the indiscriminate activities of these scavengers have disrupted communities and businesses, particularly those in the Blacksmith, Welder, and Iron Sellers Association, have repeatedly raised concerns over the severe economic losses caused by the unchecked operations of scavengers.

Many residents lament that reporting the activities of ‘Bola’ boys to the police no longer yields results, as offenders are often released without consequences or are seen in close interactions with law enforcement officials,” the motion notes.
