Muslims have been enjoined to be mindful of property acquisition, keep accurate records of their daily dealings and ensure Islamic injunctions permeate all aspects of their lives.

An Islamic cleric, Sheikh Abdulwaheed Abdulhameed gave the advice while delivering the 9th Ramadan lecture of The Criterion, Oyo District entitled “Accessing and Implementing Islamic Jurisprudence on Inheritance in Contemporary Nigeria” held at Bodija Estate and Environs Muslim Community, Ibadan.

Sheikh Abdulhameed noted that it was mandatory for Muslims to apply Sharia in the distribution of properties for rightful heirs instead of will writing or sharing of properties in the Yoruba traditional method.

“The conventional method of Will writing is non islamic and preemptive; no one knows who will die first -property owner or his heirs. Also, the traditional method of inheritance sharing is unjust and discriminatory against women. It also allows property usurpations”.

The cleric stressed that Islamic jurisprudence on inheritance was all inclusive, fair and just method of property sharing which is devoid of emotions and interests.

Sheikh Abdulhameed called on Islamic clerics to desist from desperation for wealth but rather increase their knowledge to educate the Ummah about pristine religion with a view to attaining eternal bliss.

In a remark, the Chairman on the occasion, Dr Bashir Olanrewaju pointed out the need for Muslims to prepare for death and those who would inherit their estates in order to prevent rancour.

In a goodwill message, the International Amirah of The Criterion, Alhaja Medinat Akanni represented by the International Secretary, Alhaja Aminat Abdulwahab described the topic as timely in the enlightenment against cultural practices which deny women their rightful share of inheritance.

The Amirah of The Criterion, Oyo District, Professor Morufat Balogun remarked that the topic was in line with the association’s vision and passion to address social issues with a view to finding lasting solutions, and especially welfare of women and children.

Professor Balogun explained that the association engages in quarterly seminars on Islamic and Western education, economic and political empowerment of women, marriage counselling and conflict resolution, as well as care for the orphans and widows.

The programme featured health talk on the significance of comprehensive Hepatitis B test, and The Criterion’s display of products from vocational skills.

Ash Wednesday is a day that marks the beginning of forty days of fasting and prayer among various Christian denominations such as Catholic, Anglican, Baptist and Methodist.

To mark the day, worshippers converge on their various churches for a brief service where they put ash on their foreheads.

In an interview with Vicar of Saint James Anglican Church, Aramoko-Ekiti, Venerable Rufus Ajidahun said the ash placed on the forehead of the faithful symbolized humility.

Venerable Ajidahun stressed that the ash was a reminder that every mortal must go back to dust where God created them from.

The Vicar enjoined Christians to use the Lenten period to engage in almsgiving as well as fervent prayers for themselves and the nation.

He advised Christians to use Lent to showcase Jesus Christ to unbelievers through love, and forsake their sinful ways.

For the third week in a row, Pope Francis has been unable to deliver his traditional Angelus prayer in person, with the Vatican publishing his written comments instead.

The Vatican said the text, sent from his hospital room in Rome, had been written “in the past few days”. In it, the Pope thanked people for their prayers and thanked his medical team for their care.

“I feel in my heart the ‘blessing’ that is hidden within frailty, because it is precisely in these moments that we learn even more to trust in the Lord,” he wrote.

“At the same time, I thank God for giving me the opportunity to share in body and spirit the condition of so many sick and suffering people.”

The Pope told Catholics around the world that he felt their “affection and closeness”.

“I feel as if I am ‘carried’ and supported by all God’s people. Thank you all!” the text reads.

In the latest update from the Vatican, Pope Francis was said to be resting after a “peaceful” night.

On Sunday morning, according to the Vatican, “the Pope woke, had breakfast with coffee, continued his therapy and read the newspapers as he usually does”.

The Pope received two visitors in Gemelli hospital on Sunday – the first outside visitors the Vatican has mentioned since last Monday.

Once again, it was Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Parolin and his deputy, Monsignor Pena Parra, who saw Pope Francis in his 10th-floor hospital room. There are no details about the length of time they spent with him or what was discussed.

On Friday, the Pope suffered a second breathing “crisis”, after which he was receiving extra oxygen support but was not intubated.

By Saturday evening, the Vatican described his condition as stable, with no fever and no further “crises” with his breathing. He was said to be “alert” and eating normally.

In his Sunday Angelus, the Pope also prayed for peace, including in “tormented Ukraine, Palestine, Israel”, adding: “From here, war appears even more absurd.”

On Sundays, visitors to the Vatican usually gather on St Peter’s Square to see the Pope appear at a window high up in the Apostolic Palace in the official Papal apartment.

However, Francis does not live there, opting for the simpler setting of the Vatican’s Santa Marta guest house.

The Concerned Muslim Scholars in Nigeria have called on South-West state governors to grant the legitimate and constitutional request of Muslims for the establishment of Sharia Courts of Appeal across the six states in the geo-political zone.

The organization, in collaboration with the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria, made the demand during a news conference held at Arisekola Mosque, Iwo Road, Ibadan.

President-General Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria, Sheikh AbdurRasheed Hadiyatullahi, while addressing newsmen on the state of the nation as it affects Yoruba Muslims in particular, and Nigerians in general stressed that it is the mandatory duty of Southwest governors to establish Shari’ah Court of Appeal and subordinate Courts of first instance for Muslims who are in the majority.

The establishment of Sharia Courts is exclusively for Muslims and parties who wish to be adjudicated according to Sharia principles, and its establishment should not be misconstrued as a prejudice to the rights of non-Muslims or an agenda to Islamize Nigeria” he clarified.

Sheikh Hadiyatullahi added that the establishment of the Independent Shari’ah Panel was to adjudicate Muslim disputes by Islamic injunctions and to fill the lacuna in the conventional judicial system in various states.

He also urged President Bola Tinubu to address unfair treatment meted out to Southern Muslims in all aspects of public service.

Sheikh Hadiyyatullahi said such redress would cancel the suspicion of subtle political annihilation against Muslims, while those opposing President Tinubu during his campaign period are reaping the proceeds of Muslim/Muslim Ticket.

The Pioneer Executive Secretary, Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria, MUSWEN, Professor Daud Noibi maintained that only those who are ignorant of the values and significance of Shari’ah would oppose its establishment.

Professor Noibi while cautioning non-Muslims against objection to Shari’ah equally urged some Islamic clerics to desist from obstructing willing Muslims who are ready to comply with Allah’s commandments in their lifestyle.

He noted that Shari’ah guarantees good governance and adequate security of lives and property.

The Director of Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola who lamented the deprivation of Muslims in Yorubaland the right to freedom of religion, said the tripartite nature of the justice system should be operated to give room for equal opportunity, accessibility to justice, fairness which are features of democracy.

A retired Professor of Islamic and Arabic Studies at the University of Ibadan, Kamil Oloso harped on the need for clerics and organizations to sensitise Nigerians about the universality of Islam, stressing Shari’ah discourse is devoid of ethnicity or sectional interest.

Professor Oloso called for spreading the message of Shari’ah to the federal government, documentation and translation of the suggestions by various scholars into major Nigerian languages.

Chairman Council of Ulama, Lagos state, Sheikh Abdulfatah Thani appealed to the government to accede to the demand for the establishment of Sharia Courts to shame enemies of the country who had predicted its disintegration.

For Nigeria to reclaim its leadership position in the global community, political leaders must view their offices as a call to stewardship.

Senior Pastor of Harvesthouse Christian Centre, HCC, Akobo, Ibadan, Reverend Gbeminiyi Eboda, made this assertion during a news briefing held at the Alpha Cathedral auditorium of the church ahead of an evening of prayer and praise scheduled for Wednesday, January 22, 2025.

Reverend Eboda expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s stagnation despite its abundant natural resources, attributing its struggles to poor governance and failed social and economic policies.

He highlighted issues such as insecurity, inflation, and the dilapidation of public infrastructure, emphasizing the need for both leaders and citizens to embrace their roles as key stakeholders in nation-building, rather than leaving the task to a select few.

“We need to treat everything as if it is our own. We must develop a sense of stewardship and stop relying on a few individuals to build the nation. Every citizen must see themselves as a stakeholder. Only then can our nation become a better place,” Reverend Eboda said.

Addressing the severe economic challenges faced by Nigerians, which he attributed to political shortcomings; Reverend Eboda urged political leaders to fulfil their campaign promises.

“Those in leadership positions must see their roles as a call to serve. They should prioritize the electorate over the interests of a few sponsors. “Leaders should lead by example. They must sacrifice and deal with the fifth columnist”, he stated.

Despite these challenges, the cleric commended the resilience and unity of Nigerians, expressing optimism for a brighter future.

Reverend Eboda also spoke about the upcoming prayer and praise event, Night of Mercy, scheduled to run from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Alpha Cathedral, Police Bus Stop, Akobo, Ibadan.

According to him, the program, based on divine inspiration, was deliberately planned for the start of the year to ensure a smooth and successful 2025.

This fourth edition of the program will feature renowned gospel artist Bidemi Olaoba.

Reverend Eboda noted that the event is open to both Christians and people of other faiths, with adequate arrangements made for security and traffic management.

For those unable to attend in person, the program will be streamed live on Facebook, YouTube, and other social media platforms.

In a special tribute, entitled “Jimmy Carter: The Departure of a Titan”, Chief Obasanjo explained that his decision to organise the service, about 5000 miles away from the home country of the deceased was in recognition of the late former US President Carter’s lifestyle as a humble man.

Chief Obasanjo described the 39th US President as a great world leader and a righteous lover of God and humanity who fostered real independence as well as economic and social progress for all African nations.

“With less than a month in office, President Carter told us to begin our walking and working together with the US Administration under President Carter leading to my State Visit to the US on October 11, 1977, and culminating in President Carter’s State Visit to Nigeria on March 31-April 3, 1978, the first of such State Visits to any country in Africa by a sitting American President. From then on, whatever the US was doing in Africa, we were carried along”, Chief Obasanjo stated.

Acknowledging the late Carter as a personal friend that stayed true to their friendship of many decades, former President Obasanjo affirmed that the former US President established and sustained the peace, through a virile relationship between Nigeria and the United States and equally between the United States and the entire African continent.

He maintained that the late Carter had also shown that success could easily be achieved while leading by example and in humility, through a leadership style that carried along an army of co-workers who shared the ideal and burden of the work.

In a sermon, President of the Baptist Convention, the Reverend Israel Akanji also highlighted the laudable contributions of the late Jimmy Carter towards ensuring global peace and stability, stressing the need for other world leaders to emulate the virtues of putting the people’s interest above all other considerations.
