Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has launched an institute to equip leaders with the skills, capability, and vision necessary to transform their nations and the continent collectively.

The Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute, OOLI, is a movement aimed at reclaiming Africa’s leadership narrative and investing in a new generation of principled, prepared, and people-focused leaders.

Inaugurating the institute at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the former President explained that the institute was in  response to the leadership deficit in Africa, which he noted had hindered the continent’s development and prosperity.

Chief Obasanjo pointed that OOLI was not just an academic institution, but a hybrid that would borrow from the best practices of the military and other institutions.

The former president expressed confidence that the institute would  become a beacon of excellence in leadership education, preparation, and practice, announcing that the institute would collaborate and network with organizations and institutions with similar aims and objectives.

He commended several African leaders, including President John Mahama of Ghana, President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim of Mauritius, former President Kgalema Motlanthe of South Africa, and former President Macky Sall of Senegal, for their roles in leadership development in Africa.

Indigenes of Oyo State in different higher institutions across the country, under the aegis of the Federation of Oyo State Students Union (FOSSU), have lauded Governor Seyi Makinde for implementing policies that support students’ academic advancement.

The students, led by their National President, Mr Ibrahim Alarape and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Mr Victor Olojede, converged on the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Ibadan.

In what was tagged “appreciation rally”, the students praised Governor Makinde for interventions that continually supported and empowered students for a better and brighter future.

Delivering his speech, the National President of FOSSU, Mr Alarape, thanked the governor for his remarkable leadership and for believing in Oyo State students, promising that they would repay his fatherly love with outstanding performances in their academics.

Responding, Governor Makinde said that his government would continue to remain committed to the welfare of the students in the state.

Governor Makinde stated that his administration would continue to support the youth by implementing policies and programmes that would narrow the economic gaps.

According to him, the only way out of poverty for the country is for it to focus on building entrepreneurs who can take risks, invest in educating the youth and encouraging production.

He said, “I want to appreciate you guys for coming to let us know that you have received alerts. It is your government, and it is our commonwealth.

“You are our future. I am also a father to three children, so whatever challenges you are faced with, I am also dealing with those challenges in my own house. So, rest assured that we will continue to look after your well-being as an administration.

“People will come up to say that we have built roads and other infrastructure. Yes, we have. But these are not what we want to be remembered for. We want to be remembered for the institutions that we are building that will guarantee good governance well beyond the tenure of this administration.

“I have heard people say Nigeria is a rich country,y and we don’t have any business with poverty. I disagree with those people. Yes, we are rich in natural resources, but three ingredients can bring about economic prosperity.

“First, we must have entrepreneurs, and we must have people who are ready to take risks. I became an entrepreneur at the age of 29, paying salaries to people. You have to make up your mind. So, we will continue to ensure that, amongst us, we give exposure to the coming generation.

“Secondly, we need knowledge and skill. When we pay attention to education, it is to ensure that we are not neglecting the leg that can ensure economic prosperity.

“Finally, we need intensive production.

Some say Nigerian youths are lazy, but I know you are not. When we were installing streetlights, it was because we were trying to stimulate our economy.

“What you need to do is to cooperate with your government. If you see anything that can improve our economy, bring it to our attention, and we will ensure that those gaps are narrowed.

“The good thing is that the power sector is being decentralised right now, and there are still challenges in terms of implementation. But Oyo State has its electricity regulatory commission now; we are one of the few states that have done that.

Some of these problems would be addressed as we take control of our destiny in terms of power generation, transmission and distribution. We won’t tell you stories. But, in the meantime, we will try and continue to do our best.”

No fewer than 200,000 more candidates crossed the 200 average mark in the Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examination, UTME, after the recent resit organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Examination Board, JAMB, following the technical and human errors that marred the original exam.

In the resit UTME results released on Sunday, JAMB noted that the majority of candidates — 1,365,479 (70.7 per cent) out of 1.9 million candidates — scored below 200 after both the original exam and the resit.

In the original results released by JAMB on May 9, 2025, over 1.5 million candidates out of 1.9 million candidates who took the exam had scored below 200 out of the total 400 marks, raising concerns in the country.

Following sustained pressure, JAMB investigated the cause of the mass failure and discovered technical and human errors in its system.

Consequently, it announced a resit exam for 379,000 candidates in Lagos and the South-East states.

The results of the resit UTME released on Sunday, revealing that a good number of the candidates, who previously scored below 200, crossed the average mark this time.

JAMB indicated that after the resit UTME, the number of candidates who scored below 200 marks shrank from over 1.5 million to 1,365,479, indicating that about 200,000 more candidates crossed the average score.

According to JAMB, the new results reflect an improvement in performance compared with previous years since the adoption of the Computer-Based Test format in 2013.

With the release, the number of candidates who scored less than 200 in the 2025 UTME now stands at 1.3 million from the earlier 1.5 million.

Candidates who scored 200 and above now stand at 565,988.

Mr. Gbajabiamila made the call in his keynote address on the theme, “Interrogating the Funding of Education: Global Versus Nigerian Perspectives”, at the maiden Annual Lecture of Osun State University, held at the Olagunsoye Oyinlola Auditorium in Osogbo, Osun State.

While highlighting the challenge of funding a higher education system that receives nearly two million applicants annually, Mr. Gbajabiamila emphasised the urgency of seeking alternative revenue sources to ensure long-term viability.

Mr. Gbajabiamila also lauded the federal government’s recently introduced student loan scheme, describing it as a positive step toward equitable access to education, and reaffirmed the vital role of public service in strengthening democracy.

Welcoming the Chief of Staff to the state, Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, praised UNIOSUN for its rapid development and strategic impact on the state’s educational and economic landscape.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has called on stakeholders in the education sector to speak out against the growing menace of bullying, which has become a serious concern in both public and private schools.

The governor made this appeal during a one-day strategic workshop in Ondo State to commemorate the 2025 International Children’s Day.

The event brought together a diverse group of education stakeholders, including teachers, school administrators, educationists, and policymakers.

Held under the theme “Stand Up, Speak Up: Building a Bullying-Free Generation,” the workshop aimed to raise awareness and promote solutions to curb bullying in schools.

Delivering the governor’s address, the Chairman of the Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Victor Olabimtan, described the theme as timely and significant, noting the rising negative impact of bullying on children and young adults.

He stressed the importance of intensified awareness campaigns and the creation of safe, inclusive learning environments where children can grow without fear of intimidation or harassment.

Governor Aiyedatiwa also called for stronger collaboration between stakeholders and the state government to completely eradicate bullying in all its forms.

Meanwhile, the Government of Ondo State has unveiled a series of activities to commemorate the 2025 Children’s Day celebration.

Addressing journalists at a press briefing held at the Women Affairs Hall, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Seun Osamaye, noted that the National Children’s Day is celebrated annually to honour, recognise, and identify with children across the state, particularly those in primary and secondary schools.

She explained that the purpose was to inform and sensitise children about the government’s efforts to improve their lives and to ensure continuous investment in child development and education across the state.

She revealed that several competitions would be held in different categories to identify outstanding students, who will represent their schools and local government areas. The aim, she said, is to encourage intellectual growth, a reading culture, and academic seriousness among students.

She added that the workshop, chaired by the SUBEB Chairman, would also feature the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, who would speak on the Child Rights Law.

According to her, the initiative is designed to ensure all stakeholders align with the outlined activities and take the message back to their respective schools and institutions, in preparation for the upcoming competitions.

Mrs Osamaye disclosed that on Tuesday, the State Children’s Parliament would visit the State House of Assembly to observe plenary proceedings and interact with the Speaker.

The Ondo State Children’s Parliament, which has been moribund for over a decade, is being revived. Tomorrow, the children will be introduced to the Speaker and will observe plenary with the assistance of Safety Children International.

She stated that the children would participate in a two-day orientation programme between Wednesday and Thursday, where they would be trained on their parliamentary roles and responsibilities.

On Friday, there will be a pre-rehearsal for the main event scheduled for next week on Tuesday.

According to her, activities for that day include a series of competitions such as a public speaking competition based on the theme of the celebration, and it will involve 18 selected schools, each represented by its best speaker. A total of 2,500 children from 100 schools across the state are expected to attend.

She further revealed that there will be a march-past and each school would also present a cultural display to showcase the unique heritage of their locality.

Dr. Osamaye announced that the winners of the competitions would be rewarded with cash prizes. The first-place winner will receive a grand prize of ₦500,000; the second-place winner, ₦200,000; and the third-place winner, ₦100,000.

These prizes and trophies are meant to promote unity, love, and active engagement among our students“, she concluded.

The National President of ASUSS, Mr. Sola Adigun made the commendation in a statement to newsmen in Osogbo.

Mr. Adigun who described the policy as a bold step, noted that the policy includes monthly stipends, free meals, accommodation, internationally recognised certifications, and guaranteed post-graduation support.

He stressed that the policy is capable of repositioning technical education in Nigeria and preparing a generation of self-reliant and globally competitive youth.

The ASUSS President emphasised the need for complementary policies and robust implementation strategies to guarantee the programme’s success and sustainability.

The 33 FSTCs must be equipped with modern tools, functional laboratories, and digital infrastructure to deliver high-quality, hands-on instruction.” The President ASUSS explains further.

Parents of the candidates affected by the human error which led to a glitch in the 2025 Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examination, UTME, have demanded the postponement of the planned resit, which begins today, till June 2025.

A post from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, on its official X handle on Thursday stated, “…all the affected candidates will be contacted to reprint their examination slips towards retaking their examinations starting from 16th May, 2025 (today).”

One of the affected students posted on X the SMS he received after getting notifications for the examination.

You have been scheduled to sit the 2025 UTME Resit examination slated for Friday, May 16, 2025, by 12:00pm. To know your centre, reprint your Examination slip by visiting.”

Some of the parents, who spoke in separate interviews with the newsmen, cited the traumatic experiences of the candidates, the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination, and the distance to the exam centres, among other issues.

On Wednesday, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board admitted a technical error that affected over 300,000 candidates who sat for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

Speaking during a press conference, the JAMB Registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, expressed deep regret over what he described as a disappointing setback in the exercise that had, until the glitch, been considered one of the most successful in recent years.

So, I appeal to the candidates and those affected by the error of our system to accept this explanation as the truth of the matter without embellishment, please. I apologise and take full responsibility, not just in words,” he said.

Professor Oloyede said the issue affected 157 examination centres across Lagos and the South-East.

He said the glitch affected 206,610 candidates across 65 centres in Lagos State and 173,387 candidates in 92 centres across South East states.

While 54.37 per cent of candidates affected are in Lagos, the remaining 45.63 per cent are spread across Anambra, Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, and Enugu States.

He explained that the glitch was caused by a failed patch meant to update examination servers in the region.

He assured that the affected candidates could retake the examination between May 16 and May 18, 2025.

A parent, Mr Bukola Omoniyi, noted that his child had since returned to his school located in Oyo State.

This is not fair. You can’t say the children have to sit the examination immediately. They are currently doing WAEC. We got a text today (Thursday)  saying he has to sit the examination on Saturday. Meanwhile, he is already in Ibadan. How will he rush down to Lagos because his centre is in Lagos, and then rush back to school? This is unfair.

“No one cares about the psychological trauma on these children. This was no fault of theirs, why should they be made to suffer consequences for what they know not?” he queried.

Another parent, Mrs Aisha Okikiola, noted that her child, who was preparing for a WAEC paper, had to start reading for UTME, which she said is confusing the candidate.

My child is to resit the UTME on Saturday, and she has WAEC on Sunday. The two examination bodies have different syllabi. Do you know how difficult it is to try to juggle two different syllabi at the same time?  We are asking that JAMB postpone the examination till June, when the children will be done with their WAEC, so that they will have enough time to rest,” she demanded.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a principal in one of the Catholic schools in Enugu noted that the school reached out to parents to discuss arrangements for the UTME, describing the situation as taxing.

She stated, “It has not been easy for us. Almost all our students are having the resit. This is WAEC time. Some of them are scared because they have to start reading afresh. It will be kind and reasonable if JAMB can shift this examination to June, when the students would have concluded their WAEC. Some of them have centres very far away from here. We are talking about safety here.”

A parent in Imo, Mr Felix Onuoha, said, “I subscribe to the suggestion that the resit be moved to after WAEC so that the students will have ample time to study. What happened is not their fault, and they should not be punished for it.”

Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria FRCN has been commended for maintaining its flagship status in the nation’s broadcast industry.

One of teachers of Barakat Nursery and Primary School,  Adeyi Avenue, Old Bodija, Ibadan, Mrs  Rahmat Adunola gave the commendation when she and some other teachers led pupils of the school on excursion to the Ibadan Zonal Station of Radio Nigeria.

Mrs Adunola said Radio Nigeria disseminated factual information, educative contents and promote peace in the society.

Mrs Adunola explained that the school chose Radio Nigeria to broaden the knowledge the pupils on how news content and educative programmes were packaged and disseminated to the public.

“Federal Radio Stations cannot be compared to other stations because of its factual news dissemination. Our  pupils always listen to radio but they have no knowledge of how people talk on radio.Bringing  them for an excursion would expose them to know how people communicate on radio”.

Mrs Adunola believed the knowledge acquired by the pupils during the visit would further sharpen their minds for future career choice.

The  teacher urged other proprietors of other schools to expose their pupils to other educative activities beyond the schools for wider knowledge.

Some of the pupils who spoke with Radio Nigeria  said their visit  afforded them the opportunity to understand how the media gathered and disseminated information to their audience. “

We learnt that there is an audio player in the studio and also a library where books are kept.We also visited the live studio where  news is being  broadcast on air”. We were also briefed about Radio Nigeria Fm stations in the south West states”We had fun, it was  amazing”

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has ordered an immediate review of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) following a wave of public complaints alleging technical glitches, incomplete questions, and unusually low scores.

The Board, in a statement issued by its Public Communication Advisor, Fabian Benjamin, acknowledged what it described as an “unusual volume of complaints” since the release of the UTME results last Friday.

It said the development had prompted it to fast-track its annual post-examination review process, which typically takes place months after the exercise.

We are particularly concerned about the unusual complaints originating from a few states within the federation. We are currently scrutinising these complaints in detail to identify and rectify any potential technical issues,” the statement read.

The spokesperson explained that the annual review covers three stages of the UTME cycle registration, examination, and result release.

He added that if any faults are found in the system, JAMB would not hesitate to implement “appropriate remedial measures.

“To assist in this process, we have engaged a number of experts, including members from the Computer Professionals Association of Nigeria, Chief External Examiners, who are heads of tertiary institutions, the Educational Assessment and Research Network in Africa, measurement experts, and Vice Chancellors from various institutions.”

The exam board noted that “If it is determined that there were indeed glitches, we will implement appropriate remedial measures promptly, as we do in the case of the examinations themselves.”

JAMB’s intervention comes amid reports that thousands of candidates are preparing to file a class-action lawsuit against the Board over the alleged irregularities.

After scoring 289 in the previous year’s UTME, he was hopeful of achieving an even better result this time. Unfortunately, the outcome was a crushing disappointment, leaving him in deep distress. Some of the candidates who spoke with Radio Nigeria commended the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, for addressing the challenges recorded during the conduct of the mock examination.

They stressed the need for the examination regulatory body to mandate the various examination centres to provide spaces for candidates to stay pending their turn to take the exam, rather than leaving them out in the sun.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale has charged newly matriculated students of the institution to embrace discipline and prioritise excellence.

He gave the charge in his matriculation speech to the new students at the Matriculation ceremony for the 2024/2025 academic session, which was held at the International Conference Centre of the institution in Ibadan.

Professor Adebowale noted that matriculation was not a mere ceremony but a rite of passage that symbolizes a formal admission into the university.

He urged the students to imbibe the habit of engaging in independent learning rather than being ‘spoon-fed’ like secondary school students.

The VC further admonished them to walk the path of excellence, which the University treasures.

He disclosed that out of the 22,000 candidates who sought admission into the University of Ibadan, 4,650 were offered provisional admission, while only 4,215 were cleared to be students of the University.

Professor Adebowale charged the matriculants to be resilient, strive for distinction in their studies, character, and extra-curricular engagements, prioritise excellence, and embrace discipline.

In a Matriculation Lecture, an Alumnus of the University of Ibadan, Dr Olukayode Aiyenuyo encouraged the new students to also seek God for a true path in life in order to achieve success.

Highlight of the matriculation ceremony was the administration of the Matriculation Oath to the students by the Registrar, Mr. Ganiyu Saliu.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has dissociated itself from the ongoing circulation of false, misleading, and criminal messages targeting candidates who registered for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

The JAMB spokesperson, Dr Fabian Benjamin, in a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, said the messages were being disseminated by suspected fraudsters to defraud unsuspecting individuals.

Benjamin noted that the perpetrators had exploited the numerical variant of UTME, 8863, and merged it with the Board’s short code, 55019, to create a deceptive code that mimics JAMB’s official messaging system.

According to him, through this fraudulent scheme, they have been sending misleading messages to candidates, falsely claiming to detect manipulations in their JAMB details and urging them to contact certain individuals who would “assist” in resolving these fabricated issues.

“We want to emphasise that these messages are not from JAMB. Security agencies have been notified and are actively tracking the perpetrators behind this scam.

“Candidates are strongly advised to ignore such messages. This is a common tactic employed by fraudsters who seek to exploit the examination period to deceive and defraud innocent candidates.”

He, therefore, urged the general public to remain vigilant and critically assess the messages they receive, adding that any communication that does not align with JAMB’s official channels or uses suspicious language or instructions should be treated as fraudulent.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has said no candidate would sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, outside their state of registration.

The JAMB Public Communication Advisor, Dr Fabian Benjamin, stated this in a telephone interview with newsmen in Abuja.

Dr Benjamin explained that some candidates, who sat for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, outside their state of registration and residence, were sent to the available mock centres closer to their areas.

He said this was because not all the Computer-Based Test, CBT, centres were available to conduct the mock examination, adding that, however, all registered centres would be available for the main exercise.

“If centres for mock in Abuja are filled up and there are available centres in Nassarawa State, candidates will be sent there.

According to him, this is not likely to happen in the main examination because there will be more centres conducting the main examination and so, no candidate will be sent outside their state of residence.

Dr Benjamin explained that early registration of the UTME also determined how close a candidate’s centre would be to him or her, adding that once a closer centre was already filled up, the candidate may be assigned any available centre within the state.

A bill to abolish the dichotomy and discrimination between Bachelor’s Degree holders and Higher National Diploma (HND) holders has scaled second reading in the House of Representatives.

According to the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, the bill sought to replace HND with Bachelor of Tech so that graduates of Polytechnic would be able to compete favourably with other university graduates.

The bill, which was sponsored by a member, Fuad Laguda from Lagos State, also emphasised the importance of technical education.

Speaker Abbas said the position taken by all boards of Polytechnics in Nigeria is “the abolition of HND and in place of it to have Bachelor of Technology so that at least graduates of polytechnics will be able to compete with those from Universities”.

At the same time, they are calling for hybrid supervision where the degree component of the polytechnic education will be handled by the NUC (National Universities Commission) while the National Diploma will continue to be handled by the NBTE (National Board for Technical Education).

“Because of the degree component of this amendment, they felt that the qualification for being Rector should also be upgraded to a Ph.D holder at the minimum since you will now be talking about degree programmes, it is only proper for such kind of establishment to have a Ph.D holder as the head of the institution,” he said.

Abbas subjected the bill to a voice vote and the lawmakers approved it to scale second reading.

Relevant authorities in the Nigerian education sector have been urged to engage more youths in vocational and technical education to raise the needed professionals for the nation to tackle the effects of global industrial challenges.

A frontline businessman and humanitarian, Alhaji Ibraheem Egungbohun made the call at the 6th combined convocation of the Ogun State Institute of Technology, OGITECH, Igbesa, in Ado Odo Ota Council Area, after his conferment with the Institute’s Fellowship Award.

Alhaji Egungbohun, popularly known as IBD also advocated increased funding and investments to make vocational and technical education attractive to the youths as part of efforts to boost employment opportunities in the country.

Represented by his wife, Omolara, Alhaji Egungbohun maintained that prioritizing vocational and Technical education would make the youth self-reliant and enable them to contribute actively to nation-building.

He affirmed“It is only through vocational and technical education that the youth can get entrepreneurial knowledge to stand and work on their own. The government should then make it more enticing to youths. It is the way forward for this country to end this youthful restfulness.”

Chief Egungbohun also encouraged capable individuals and corporate organisations to support the mono-technic in funding the mass production of the Electric vehicle recently unveiled by the Institute to further boost the country’s growing economy.

The frontline businessman commended the Ogun State government for placing a high premium on Education, particularly the current revitalisation and rehabilitation of technical colleges across the state among other interventions.

He advocated the need to establish functional skills acquisition centres for the nation’s young graduates to learn other vocations in addition to their degrees, noting that such moves would help to reduce over-dependence on white-collar jobs among Nigerian youths

While emphasizing that the government alone could not fund education, Alhaji Egungbohun appealed to well-meaning individuals and corporate bodies to adopt at least one school each in the state and invest their resources to reposition such schools for greatness.

He appreciated the Rector and other management of Ogun State Institute of Technology Igbesa for bestowing on him the highest honour of the school and promised to do more to uplift the less privileged in society.
