Turaki-Led PDP Faction Eyes Ekiti, Osun

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Mr. Kabiru Turaki has expressed confidence in reclaiming the governorship seats in Ekiti and Osun states as part of its plan to return to power at the federal level in the 2027 general elections.

Leader of the PDP faction Mr. Kabiru Turaki made the remarks during a courtesy visit by members of the group to former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta.

The delegation included former President of the Senate and Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees Senator Adolphus Wabara, former Governor of Niger State Dr. Babangida Aliyu, former Governor of Plateau State Senator Jonah Jang, and other party leaders aligned with the faction.

Speaking with journalists after the closed-door meeting, Mr. Turaki said the visit was aimed at drawing from the experience of the former president as the group works to reposition the party ahead of future elections.

He expressed optimism about the political prospects of the faction and assured supporters of improved fortunes going forward.

APC Adopts Oyebamiji for Osun Governorship

Former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority Alhaji Bola Oyebamiji has emerged as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the August 8, 2025 governorship election in Osun State.

Delegates adopted Alhaji Oyebamiji as the party’s standard-bearer at the APC governorship primary held on Friday.

On behalf of other aspirants, legal practitioner Mr. Kunle Adegoke, SAN, moved the motion for his adoption, while Senator Babajide Omoworare seconded it.

Following a voice vote by the 1,660 delegates drawn from the state’s 332 wards, Chairman of the Osun APC Governorship Primary Committee Senator Monday Okpebholo declared Alhaji Oyebamiji the party’s candidate for the forthcoming election.

Senator Okpebholo commended other aspirants for their commitment to the party and urged members to rally behind the candidate, stressing that unity was key to electoral victory.

He said the APC must reclaim the governorship to keep Osun State aligned with the Federal Government in order to attract increased socio-economic development.

In his acceptance speech, APC governorship candidate Alhaji Bola Oyebamiji thanked God, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, co-aspirants, and party stakeholders for ensuring a peaceful primary election.

He assured party leaders and members of his readiness for the task ahead, stating that the welfare of Osun residents would remain a top priority under his leadership.

Earlier, Osun State APC Chairman Mr. Tajudeen Lawal praised party leaders and members for their dedication and reaffirmed the party’s resolve to reclaim the state from the incumbent administration.

Other aspirants present at the event included former Deputy Governor of Osun State Mr. Benedict Alabi, Mr. Dotun Babayemi, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi, Mr. Babatunde Oralusi, and Alhaja Mulikat Jimoh.

Former APC National Secretary Senator Iyiola Omisore was absent from the event.

Dignitaries in attendance included National Secretary of the APC Senator Ajibola Basiru, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola, Governor of Ondo State Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Deputy Governor of Lagos State Mr. Femi Hamzat, former Governor of Kogi State Mr. Yahaya Bello, and Senator Francis Fadahunsi, among others.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies supervised the exercise.

‎INEC Displays Voter Register for Claims

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC in Ogun State has concluded the first phase of the Continuous Voter Registration, CVR exercise, marking a significant step in its ongoing preparations to enhance the credibility of the voter register ahead of elections.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs Feyijimi Saseyi,  who stated this in Abeokuta announced that the display of the Register of Voters for Claims and Objections would commence from Monday, 15th December to Sunday, 21st December, 2025. 

Mrs Saseyi added that the display would hold daily between 9 o’clock in the morning and 3 o’clock in the afternoon, across all 20 Local Government Area offices in the state to allow residents verify their details and raise necessary corrections.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner urged new registrants, those who transferred polling units and individuals who updated their details to take advantage of the display period, adding that forms for claims and objections would be available at all designated centres.

Mrs. Saseyi also announced that the second phase of the National CVR would resume on 5th January, 2026, while reaffirming the commission’s commitment to sustaining a transparent, credible and inclusive electoral process, urging residents to continue supporting INEC’s efforts to deepen Nigeria’s democracy.

Adeleke Emerges Accord Party Candidate for 2026 Osun Election

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Accord Party for the August 8, 2026 election in the state.

Governor Adeleke clinched the ticket at the party’s primary election held in Osogbo, the state capital, with participation from 150 accredited delegates drawn from the 30 local government areas of Osun State.

Announcing the result, Secretary of the Electoral Committee, Alhaji Abdulazeez Salaudeen, declared Adeleke winner after he secured 145 votes, while five votes were declared void.

Following the announcement, National Chairman of the Accord Party, Mr. Maxwell Ngbudem, presented the governor with a Certificate of Return, officially affirming him as the party’s candidate for the 2026 governorship election.

In his acceptance speech, Governor Adeleke expressed gratitude to party leaders, delegates, and supporters for the confidence reposed in him, describing the victory as a renewed call to service and a reflection of the party’s unity.

He reaffirmed his commitment to people-centered governance, pledging to deepen reforms, strengthen public institutions, expand economic empowerment, and accelerate infrastructural development across the state.

Governor Adeleke called on party members to remain united and intensify grassroots mobilization ahead of the 2026 election, stressing that collective effort would secure victory at the polls.

He commended the electoral committee for its transparent conduct and lauded delegates from all 30 local government areas for their active participation, noting that the overwhelming support reflected trust in his leadership.

The primary election was supervised by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) alongside party observers.

APC Disqualifies Omisore, Six Others from Osun Primary

The All Progressive Congress, APC has disqualified the Former National Secretary of the APC, Senator Iyiola Omisore and six other aspirants from participating in the forthcoming governorship primary in Osun State.

According to the Screening committee, the disqualified aspirants did not provide evidence of sponsorship by at least five fully registered and financially up-to-date party members from each Local Government Area in Osun State, as stipulated in Articles 9.3(i) and 31.2(ii) of the APC Constitution and Paragraph 6(c) of the party’s guidelines.

Other disqualified aspirants including ; former Deputy Governor of Osun State ,Mr. Benedict Alabi, Mr.Dotun Babayemi, Dr Akin Ogunbiyi, Senator Babajide Omoworare, Mr. Kunle Adegoke, SAN, and Mr Babatunde Oralusi.

Meanwhile, the APC Screening committee has cleared two aspirants, Mrs. Mulikat Jimoh and Alhaji Munirudeen Oyebamiji to contest the primary scheduled to hold on 13th of this month.

Gov. Adeleke Quits PDP amid Leadership Crisis

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has ignited shockwaves across the political landscape by formally quitting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—a decision he made effective November 4, 2025.

His spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, confirmed the bombshell announcement, revealing that the governor had already sent a resignation letter to the PDP Chairman of Ward 2, Sagba Abogunde, in Ede North.

In the letter, Governor Adeleke blamed his dramatic exit on a deepening crisis within the PDP’s national leadership, declaring that the turmoil left him with no choice but to walk away immediately.

“Due to the current crisis within the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership of the PDP with immediate effect,” he wrote in the personally signed letter.

Despite the abrupt break, Governor Adeleke expressed gratitude to the party that powered his rise—from Senator for Osun West to Governor of Osun State.

Adeleke Commiserates with APC over Adegboyega Famodun’s Demise

SGF, Traditional Rulers Pass Vote of Confidence in Tinubu

The Southern Governors’ Forum, SGF and the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers’ Council have jointly passed a vote of confidence on President Bola Tinubu and endorsed his re-election bid for the 2027 general election.

The resolution is contained in a communiqué issued at the end of their inaugural joint meeting held in Iperu-Remo, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Reading the communiqué, Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, said the endorsement was based on President Tinubu’s commitment to national stability, economic reforms and ongoing improved security.

The communiqué highlighted recent gains in foreign exchange stability, a decline in inflation, and the gradual easing of food prices as signs of economic recovery under the current administration.

It also reaffirmed the region’s commitment to national unity and inter-state collaboration for development.

On security, the forum advocated the inclusion of traditional rulers in State Security Councils, the creation of zonal security trust funds, and a unified intelligence-sharing framework.

 The communiqué also urged states in the region to collaborate with the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, on a unified resident identification system, and to intensify efforts to curb illegal mining.

The forum assured citizens that Southern Nigeria remains peaceful, united, and committed to national progress.

PDP: Turaki Promises Peace, Reforms in PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has elected a new set of national officers to steer the party’s affairs, following an elective National Convention held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan.

Former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Turaki, emerged as the new National Chairman after scoring 1,516 votes.

He was the sole candidate for the position, following the withdrawal of the PDP’s 2023 governorship candidate in Katsina State, Lado Dan Marke,.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Turaki declared that the era of impunity in the party had ended.

He pledged to restore peace, reconcile aggrieved members, and strengthen the party ahead of future elections.

Mr Turaki also urged the judiciary to remain apolitical in matters before the courts for the sake of democracy.

Immediate past National Vice Chairman (South), Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja, was elected unopposed as the new National Secretary.
Chinenyenwa Ogbu emerged as the National Women Leader.

In another contest, Solarin Adekunle defeated two opponents to become the Deputy National Organizing Secretary.

Wike, Fayose, Others Expelled by PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has expelled the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr Nyesom Wike; former Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayo Fayose; and former National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, over alleged anti-party activities.

The party also expelled several other members: National Legal Adviser, Mr Adeyemi Ajibade (SAN); Mr Umar Bature; Mr AbdulRahman Mohammed; Mr Mao Ohuabunwa; Mr George Turner; Mr Austin Nwachukwu; Mr Abraham Ammah; and Mr Dan Orbih.

One of the founding fathers of the PDP and a member of the Board of Trustees, Chief Bode George, announced the expulsions after moving a motion that was unanimously adopted by state delegates under the supervision of Acting PDP National Chairman, Mr Ilya Damagum, at the party’s Elective National Convention in Ibadan.

At the convention, Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, also moved a motion ratifying the party’s executive structures at the ward, local government and state levels where congresses had been held.

However, Governor Makinde announced the nullification of congresses in Imo, Abia, Enugu, Akwa Ibom and Rivers States, stating that the entire structures in those states stood dissolved.

He said the dissolution would be officially published for public awareness.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the PDP National Convention Planning Committee and Adamawa State Governor, Mr Ahmadu Fintiri, distanced himself from calls to expel Mr Wike.

In a statement on his X handle, Governor Fintiri said he did not support any move that could further weaken the party, stressing that peace and unity were more important than internal conflicts.

He urged party stakeholders nationwide to prioritise reconciliation and cohesion to stabilise the PDP.

Radio Nigeria reports that three governors—Senator Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, Mr Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, and Mr Agbu Kefas of Taraba State—were absent at the convention in Ibadan.

Police Tighten Security as PDP National Convention Begins

Preparations are in top gear ahead of the National Convention of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, scheduled to hold Saturday, 15th and Sunday,16th November, 2025

The event, expected to take place at the main bowl of the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan, will host delegates from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Radio Nigeria reports that the build-up to the convention has been marked by controversy, following court rulings from Federal High Court, Abuja and Oyo State High Court.
Meanwhile, The Oyo Police Command has announced comprehensive security measures ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, National Convention.

This was made known in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adewale Osifeso

He said the Command is working closely with other security agencies to ensure a safe, hitch-free, and peaceful convention expected to draw top political leaders, delegates, observers, media professionals, and guests from across the country.

According to the Command, a robust security architecture has been developed to manage the anticipated influx of visitors into the state.
The plan includes intensified patrols, increased surveillance, and intelligence-led stop-and-search operations across major locations in Oyo State.

It states that, security presence will be significantly increased at all entry and exit points, especially around the convention venue.
Public facilities such as parks, train stations, and at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport .

The Police advised residents and motorists to consider alternative routes around Adamasingba during the two-day event to avoid possible traffic disruptions.

The Command also cautioned against unauthorized gatherings, protests, or any act capable of causing public unrest before, during, or after the convention.

Tinubu: Nigeria Still Misses Lam Adesina

President Bola Tinubu has said that Nigeria continues to miss the late former Governor of Oyo State, Alhaji Lamidi Onaolapo Adesina, “Lam Adesina” describing him as a steadfast believer in the nation’s potential and a patriot who stood tall in the service of humanity.

Speaking at the 2nd Lam Adesina Memorial Lecture Series held in Ibadan on Tuesday to mark the 13th anniversary of the late governor’s passing, President Tinubu, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Mr. Sunday Dare, said he shared with the late Adesina a vision of a nation built on justice, equal opportunity, and service to the people.

“I hold his memory dear to my heart as he was not just a brother in the progressive struggle, but a believer in Nigeria’s promise,” the President said. “He taught us that politics could be noble when guided by principles, focus, and compassion. As Governor of Oyo State from 1999 to 2003, the late Lam Adesina passionately served — not ruled — the good people of Oyo State, through the provision of physical infrastructure and human development, correcting the rot institutionalized by military administrations.”

The guest speaker, former Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, delivered a lecture titled “Sustaining a Legacy of Effective Leadership in Nigeria.”

He urged parents and guardians to prioritize moral upbringing and the education of their children and wards, noting that such investment would help produce “responsible, responsive, and impactful leaders in good supply.”

Senator Amosun also emphasized the need to reintroduce history into the nation’s educational curriculum, saying this would help restore the fading core values of the Yoruba people. He noted that doing so would enable young Nigerians to appreciate the sacrifices and heroism of patriots like the late Adesina.

Tinubu Hails INEC, as Abiodun Congratulates Soludo

President Bola Tinubu on Sunday congratulated Governor Chukwuma Soludo on his re-election, calling the result “an affirmation of visionary leadership” and promising closer federal–state collaboration with Anambra.

The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Soludo the winner of Saturday’s off-cycle poll after he swept all 21 Local Government areas.

In a statement signed and released on Sunday, Tinubu praised voters, security agencies and INEC for a peaceful exercise and urged the governor to be “magnanimous in victory.”

He also commended the new INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan and charged the commission to sustain higher standards in future polls.

The overwhelming victory he recorded in Saturday’s poll has now made him the third governor in the state’s political history to win a second term.

He wrote, “I must also congratulate the people of Anambra State, the security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission on the peaceful and successful conduct of the governorship election.”

“Professor Soludo’s re-election is a testament to his visionary leadership and the significant progress the state has made under his guidance.

Tinubu reminisced on his visit to Anambra State in May, where he inaugurated some projects executed by the Soludo administration.

Assuring Soludo of his support, the President urged the former Central Bank Chief to be magnanimous in victory and to seek the cooperation of his opponents in the just-concluded elections.

He stated, “I assure Governor Soludo of my unwavering support, and I look forward to continued collaboration between Anambra and the Federal Government.

Tinubu also thanked the new INEC Chairman, Amupitan, and his team for conducting what, according to him, observers have described as a credible election, “based on the reports I have received thus far.”

“I charge the commission with maintaining the standards and further improving its performance, so we can continue to strengthen and deepen our electoral system,” said Tinubu.

Similarly, Ogun State Governor and Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has congratulated Governor  Soludo of Anambra State on his re-election.

Soludo, candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, won the election with 422,664 votes, defeating his closest rival, Nicholas Ukachukwu of the APC, who polled 99,445 votes.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Mr Kayode Akinmade, Governor Abiodun said the result reflected the confidence of the people of Anambra in Soludo’s leadership.

He urged the re-elected governor to sustain his development agenda and continue to promote unity across political lines, while commending his cordial working relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Anambra Re-Elects Governor Soludo

The candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has been declared the winner of the Saturday, November 8, 2025, Anambra State governorship election by the Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Edoba Omoregie.

Soludo, who polled a total of 422,664 votes, defeated his closest rival, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Nicholas Ukachukwu, who scored 99,445 votes, while the candidate of the Young Progressives Party, Sir Paul Chukwuma, came third with 37,753 votes.

According to INEC, a total of 16 candidates from various political parties participated in the election.

The state had 2,788,864 registered voters, out of which 598,229 were accredited. A total of 595,298 votes were cast, while 11,244 votes were rejected across the 21 local government areas.

From the results announced, Soludo of APGA won in all 21 local government areas of the state in a landslide victory.

Announcing the results at the INEC headquarters in Awka on Sunday, Omoregie said, “The number of registered voters was 2,788,864, while accredited voters were 598,229. The total valid votes stood at 584,054, rejected votes were 11,244, and the total votes cast amounted to 595,298.”

He added, “After collating the results as tallied into Form EC8E, it is now my privilege to declare the figures each candidate scored according to their political parties.

“There were a few areas affected by incidents, leading to cancellations in some wards across Anambra West, Anaocha, Awka South, and Onitsha South LGAs, amounting to 10,481 affected votes. However, the margin of
lead between the top candidates did not affect the overall outcome of the election.

“I, Prof. Edoba Omoregie, Returning Officer for the 2025 Anambra State Governorship Election, hereby declare that the election was peaceful. Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, having scored 422,664 votes — the highest number of valid votes cast and having satisfied the requirements of the law — is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”

Match your words with action, SW APC to Political Leaders

The All Progressives Congress in the South West geo-political zone has called on governors and other leaders from the zone to march word with actions and ensure that all the developmental ideas and road maps generated from the recent regional summit are carefully worked out and Implemented for the benefit of all the six states in the zone.

A non-governmental organisation known as Development Agenda for the Western Nigeria (DAWN Commission) had last week organised a two-day South West Stakeholders’ Dialogue/Summit in Akure, Ondo state in collaboration with Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) and the governments of Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti and Oyo states.

Participants at the summit included governors, lawmakers, federal government appointees, traditional rulers, former political office holders, captains of industry, interest groups among other stakeholders from the zone.

In a statement issued on Thursday and made available to journalists in Ibadan by its Zonal Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ayobami Afolabi, APC lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts which have resulted in all the nation’s six geopolitical zones having their own development commissions which are being positioned to facilitate speedy growth and development to all the geographical components of the country. 

“The quality of representation and deliberations at the recently concluded Akure summit was a pointer to the fact that the good people of the South West are ready again to reinvent the zeal, courage and bravery with which the affairs of the defunct Western Region was piloted by Chief Obafemi Awolowo and other legendary personalities who mobilized little resources to generate unique ideas and actions which placed the Region at the forefront of good governance and enviable leadership.

“The idea of geopolitical zone development commissions is a subtle way of acceding to the popular demand for true federalism as all the each zones are being given a veritable platform for partnership, collectivism and unity of purpose. The organisers of the Akure Summit also deserve applause as they were able to make the dialogue devoid of politics or sentiments as people from all divides were involved. 

“At the end of the dialogue, the whole world was made to see that sons and daughters of Yorubaland were mindful of the shared values, opportunities and prospects which could turn their land into an eldorado in no time. Ekiti APC Congress to Affirm Gov. Oyebanji as Consensus Candidate

All is now set for the conduct of Monday’s governorship primary election of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ekiti State.

The exercise will take place at Ekiti Parapo Pavilion along the new Iyin Ekiti road, Ado Ekiti.

The incumbent governor of Ekiti State, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, is the sole aspirant of the party, and he has been adopted as the APC consensus candidate.

The party had selected on Saturday five persons per ward who will unanimously affirm the candidature of Mr Oyebanji as the consensus flagbearer of the party for the June 21, 2026, Governorship poll in Ekiti State.

Also, the national leadership of the APC has appointed Kogi State governor, Usman Ododo, as chairman of the Primary Election Committee for today’s consensus primary election, while Edo State governor, Monday Okhpebolo, will serve as the deputy chairman and  Mr Taiwo Sunmonu was appointed as the secretary.

Meanwhile, the APC chairman in Ekiti State, Mr Sola Eleshin, has appealed to the party members to be peaceful during the primary election.

Speaking with newsmen in Ado Ekiti, Mr Eleshin expressed the hope that the exercise would be hitch-free since it was only to affirm Governor Biodun Oyebanji as the consensus candidate of the party for the June 20, 2026, Governorship election in the state.

APC Picks Ododo as Chairman of Ekiti Primary

The All Progressives Congress, APC in , Ekiti State has selected five persons per ward that will affirm the governorship candidate of the party for the 2026 election in the state.

The five persons will on Monday converge in Ado Ekiti to affirm the candidature of Governor Biodun Oyebanji as the sole Candidate of the party.

Speaking in Governor Oyebanji’s ward in Ikogosi Ekiti, Chairman of the Congress Committee, Emperor Jarrett Tenebe noted that the committee was satisfied with the congress, describing the exercise as an indication that members of the party were united .

In his remark, Governor Biodun Oyebanji explained that the delegates were elected on consensus, saying such showed that there was no division and acrimony in Ekiti APC.

He expressed hope that the APC would break new record during the next year’s Governorship poll in Ekiti and the 2027 general election.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress, APC has appointed Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo as chairman of the Primary Election Committee for the Monday’s consensus primary election in Ekiti State.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji is the only cleared aspirant and will be unanimously affirmed by delegates at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado Ekiti.

The APC National Organizing Secretary, Sulaiman Argungu in a letter addressed to the State chairman of the party, Mr Sola Eleshin said Edo State Governor, Monday Okhpebolo will serve as the Deputy Chairman of the Committee while Mr Taiwo Sunmonu was appointed as the secretary.

According to the letter, other members of the committee include, Iyom Nikky Ejezie, Elis Abraham, Mr Rufus Bature , Mr Latif Ibirogba, Dr. Chibuzor Agu, Chief Dr. Gabriel Oyebode, Chief Hope Dike and Mr Shehu Umaru.

Activist Urges New INEC Chairman to Digitize Nigerian Elections

Human rights activist, Dr Oluwakemi Aremu has called on Professor Joash Amupitan, the newly nominated Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to digitise Nigeria’s voting process and ensure electoral transparency.

Dr. Aremu made the call while reacting to the National Council of State’s approval of Professor Amupitan’s appointment in an interview with Radio Nigeria.

She cited a history of non-transparent elections in Nigeria and emphasized that technology would strengthen the credibility of the electoral process.

Dr. Aremu described the incoming INEC Chairman as thoroughly versed in the rule of law—a foundation for credible and free elections.

She also urged Professor Amupitan to introduce digital voting devices to prevent ballot snatching and polling station violence, incidents that have marred previous elections.

Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, a native of Kogi State in North-Central Nigeria, serves as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Joseph Ayo Babalola University in Osun State.

President Tinubu nominated him after the ten-year term of the former INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, ended in October 2025.

Professor Amupitan is the first person from Kogi State to receive a nomination as INEC Chairman.

Amupitan Gets Council’s Nod as New INEC Chairman

The National Council of State has approved the nomination of Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN) from the North-Central as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

‎President Tinubu had presented Amupitan as the nominee to fill the vacant position, following Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s exit who served from 2015 till October 2025.

‎Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, in a statement, said that the President told the council that Amupitan is the first person from Kogi, North-Central state, nominated to occupy the position and is apolitical.

‎Council members unanimously supported the nomination, with Governor Usman Ododo describing Amupitan as a man of integrity.

‎In compliance with the constitution, President Tinubu will now send Amupitan’s name to the Senate for screening.

‎Amupitan, 58, from Ayetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area in Kogi, is a Professor of Law at the University of Jos, Plateau.

He is also an alumnus of the university.

‎He specialises in Company Law, Law of Evidence, Corporate Governance and Privatisation Law. He became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in September 2014.

‎Amupitan was born on April 25, 1967.

‎After completing primary and secondary education, he attended Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, from 1982 to 1984, and the University of Jos from 1984 to 1987. He was called to the bar in 1988.

‎He earned an LLM at UNIJOS in 1993 and a PhD in 2007, amid an academic career that began in 1989, following his National Youth Service at the Bauchi State Publishing Corporation in Bauchi from 1988 to 1989.

‎Currently, he serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos.

A position he holds in conjunction with being the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Joseph Ayo Babalola University in Osun State.

‎Among the academic positions he has held at UNIJOS are: Chairman of the Committee of Deans and Directors (2012-2014); Dean of the Faculty of Law (2008-2014); and Head of Public Law (2006-2008).

‎Outside of academics, Amupitan serves as a board member of Integrated Dairies Limited in Vom, a member of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies Governing Council.

APC Chieftain Iyiola Omisore Declares Run for Osun Governorship Race

A former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Iyiola Omisore, has formally declared his intention to run for Governor of Osun State in the 2026 election.

Senator Omisore made the declaration at the APC state secretariat in Osogbo, surrounded by a massive crowd of party supporters and leaders from across the state.

He expressed confidence that he would win the party’s ticket in the primary election scheduled for December 15, 2025.

“I am expecting Osun State people to vote for APC en masse, come August 8, 2026,” Omisore stated.

He pointed to the large turnout as proof of his strong support from core APC members and their readiness to back his candidacy.

A former lawmaker at the event, Mr Ajibola Famurewa, endorsed Omisore as the most experienced candidate, citing his prior role as Deputy Governor.

“We are confident that with their support, Omisore will emerge as the party’s candidate and deliver victory,” Famurewa said.

Senator Omisore then urged his supporters to remain orderly during the primaries and promised that local campaign tours would soon begin.

2027: Supporters Urge Makinde to Run

A group of political supporters from all 33 local government areas of Oyo State converged on the Governor’s Office in Ibadan to implore Governor Seyi Makinde to contest for the presidency in 2027.

‎The supporters, carrying placards with various inscriptions, indicated that Governor Makinde has proven his leadership abilities and would bring transformative governance to Nigeria.

‎Chairman, Oyo State Supervisory Councilors’ Forum, Mr. Ayodeji Oladepo, vowed to mobilize support for Governor Makinde’s potential presidential bid.

‎The supporters believe that Makinde’s leadership style would be beneficial to the country.

‎Responding on behalf of the governor, Deputy Governor Adebayo Lawal commended the supporters for their thoughtfulness. 

‎He affirmed that Governor Makinde is eminently qualified to lead Nigeria noting that he has significantly raised the standard of governance in Oyo State and would, as president, bring similar excellence to national leadership.

Mr Lawal assured the supporters that he would deliver their message to Governor Makinde and expressed optimism that the governor would give their request due consideration.

Natasha Present at Senate Plenary after Suspension

The embattled senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, on Tuesday returned to the Senate after serving a six-month suspension.

According to report, she was seen smiling as the upper chamber resumed plenary following a 10-week recess, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio presiding over the session.

The lawmaker was accompanied by a handful of activists and loyalists, including Aisha Yesufu, who was spotted in the gallery, while others weren’t allowed in.

She walked into the Senate chamber and made her way to her seat and after exchanging pleasantries with a few senators.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s return marks the end of a suspension that had generated widespread public debate earlier in the year.

The lawmaker was suspended in March 2025 for six months over alleged misconduct during her protest against the reassignment of her seat by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on February 20.

Following her suspension, her office—located in Suite 2.05 of the Senate Wing—had been locked since March 6, 2025.

However, it was recently unsealed by the Deputy Director of the National Assembly Sergeant-at-Arms, Alabi Adedeji, paving the way for her return.

Akpoti-Uduaghan had described Akpabio as a “dictator” when she was allowed into her office two weeks ago after serving her suspension.

The plenary recorded a significant turnout of lawmakers, indicating a full return to legislative business.

Makinde Primes PDP Excos for 2027 Conquest

Oyo State Governor,Engineer Seyi Makinde has challenged the newly elected executive members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the state to ensure that the party wins all political seats in the 2027 general election. 

He threw the challenge at the party’s congress held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Ibadan.

‎The Governor described the exercise as a process to ensure that the PDP remained in power beyond 2027.

He charged party members to give the new executive members their support to deliver the offices of the presidency to the least political office for the party. 

‎Governor Makinde prayed that the party would not labor in vain and gave assuramce that every member of the party of dividends of democracy.

‎Earlier, the Chairman of the Electoral Panel Committee, Senator Austin Akobundu, had urged delegates to cooperate with the arrangements. 

‎A total of 4,050 delegates across the state participated in the congress, of which elected executive members are to run the affairs of the party for the next four years.

Mr Dayo Ogungbero was elected as the chairman, Vice Chairman, Alhaji Wasiu Adeleke while Mr Oyelami Joel emerged as the Secretary.

Adeleke Hails Peaceful Conduct of PDP Ward Congress

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has commended the restructuring and expansion of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state, following the conclusion of the party’s ward congresses.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the Governor described the congresses as peaceful while the process reflected the increasing strength of the PDP in Osun.

Governor Adeleke noted that during recent unscheduled visits to several communities, he observed what he described as strong grassroots support for both the party and his administration.

He maintained that endorsements from interest groups in different sectors of the state had further boosted the PDP’s appeal.

The Governor congratulated the state leadership of the party, led by Mr. Sunday Bisi, along with other stakeholders, for their role in the exercise.

He said the party was consolidating its position ahead of the 2026 elections, while rival parties were dealing with internal disputes.

Governor Adeleke also assured residents of his administration’s continued focus on infrastructure and social development, promising sustained efforts in governance from now through 2026 and beyond.

The Southern Summit of Former Legislators has formally adopted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office.

The former legislators made the adoption in a communiqué issued at the end of the Southern Summit of former legislators, held on Saturday at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The former legislators acknowledged the various reforms of President Tinubu, which they noted had in the last two years, re-engineered the economy, strengthened the currency, and set the nation on the path of socio-economic recovery.

They stressed the need for state governments to key into the reforms and support the President in his efforts to birth a new nation.

Speaking at the Summit, the Chief of Staff to the President, who is also the convener of the Summit, Mr  Femi Gbajabiamila, noted that with the signing into law of the tax reforms, President Tinubu has ushered in a new era of economic justice built on fairness, accountability, and national purpose.

In his message, Governor Dapo Abiodun, noted that nation building required the collective efforts of all Nigerians irrespective of  tribal, religious, political, and economic divides.

Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Senator Ken Nnamani had stressed the need for former legislators to come together to deliberate on the challenges confronting the nation and proffer workable solutions to the government.
