Saturday’s FIFA World Cup 2026 action produced goals, late drama and impressive individual performances as Germany and the Netherlands strengthened their positions in the group stage race.

In Group F, the Netherlands delivered one of the standout performances of the tournament with a commanding 5–1 victory over Sweden.

The Dutch attack was spearheaded by Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo, who both scored braces to overwhelm the Swedish defence.

Crysencio Summerville added the fifth goal to complete an emphatic outing, while Anthony Elanga scored Sweden’s only goal.

Brobbey’s movement and physical presence consistently troubled Sweden’s back line, while Gakpo once again demonstrated composure and attacking efficiency as the Netherlands strengthened their grip on Group F.

The Netherlands win made it 14 matches unbeaten in the global finals to set a new record.

They had shared it with Brazil, whom Garrincha and Pele propelled to 13 games without defeat from 1958 to 1966.

In Group E, Germany secured qualification into the knockout rounds with a dramatic 2–1 comeback victory over Ivory Coast.

Ivory Coast had taken the lead through Franck Kessié, putting pressure on the Germans.

Germany responded strongly in the second half through substitute Deniz Undav, who scored the equaliser in the 68th minute before completing the comeback with a stoppage-time winner.

With this result, Germany has registered a record 16th comeback victory in the World Cup.

Brazil are next on 15 while no other nation has rallied from behind to win on more than six occasions.

Elsewhere in Group E, Ecuador and World Cup debutants, Curaçao settled for a goalless draw.

Despite Ecuador creating several opportunities and controlling large periods of possession, Curaçao remained organised throughout.

Curaçao Goalkeeper Eloy Room emerged as one of the game’s defining figures with a composed display that helped his side earn a valuable point.

Preparations have been moved to Belgium amid the upsurge, which is thought to have killed more than 130 people.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has called the outbreak a “public health emergency of international concern”, but said it was not at pandemic level.

Jerry Kalemo, a spokesperson for the national football team, told international media that pre-tournament games in Europe would go ahead as planned, as the squad gears up for their first World Cup since 1974.

DR Congo are due to play friendly matches against Denmark, on 3 June in Belgium, and Chile, on 9 June in Spain, ahead of the World Cup finals.

A spokesperson for the DR Congo team told the Reuters news agency that the squad’s training camp had been cancelled due to travel restrictions imposed by the US, who are hosting the World Cup this summer, along with Mexico and Canada.

The US’ public health agency has banned entry from non-Americans who have been in the DR Congo, Uganda or South Sudan in the previous 21 days, in response to the Ebola outbreak.

The draw, which marks the start of Africa’s qualification campaign for the Los Angeles Games, will be held at CAF headquarters by 1pm on Wednesday and streamed live on the CAF YouTube channel.

Report says, a total of 35 national teams have entered the qualification race, reflecting the scale of competition across the continent.

The list includes Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Comoros, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritius, Morocco, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, South Africa, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

CAF has structured the qualifying pathway into five rounds, with only two African teams ultimately securing tickets to the women’s football tournament at the 2028 Olympic Games, scheduled to run from July 11 to 29, 2028 in Los Angeles and other cities across the United States.

Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe delivered a historic performance to win the London Marathon, becoming the first athlete to run a sub-two-hour marathon in a competitive race.

The 30-year-old crossed the finish line in one hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds, shattering the previous mark of 2:00:35 set by the late Kelvin Kiptum in 2023.

Great marathoner Eliud Kipchoge ran under two hours in 2019, but his 1:59:40 effort was achieved under controlled conditions and was not record-eligible.

Already on record pace at halfway in 1:00:29, Sawe accelerated in the second half, making a decisive move before the final 10 kilometres.

Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha was the only athlete able to respond, finishing second in 1:59:41 to also break the two-hour barrier, while Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo placed third in 2:00:28.

Speaking after the race, Sawe said, “I am feeling good. I am so happy. It is a day to remember for me. We started the race well. Approaching finishing the race, I was feeling strong. Finally reaching the finish line, I saw the time, and I was so excited.”

In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa retained her title, setting a new women-only world record of 2:15:41 after pulling clear of Kenya’s Hellen Obiri and Joyciline Jepkosgei.

In the wheelchair events, Switzerland’s Marcel Hug claimed a record-equalling eighth London Marathon title, matching Great Britain’s David Weir, while compatriot Catherine Debrunner defended the women’s title ahead of the United States’ Tatyana McFadden.

Confederation of African Football, CAF, President Patrice Motsepe met with Moroccan football officials to address the administrative crisis surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, final.

Motsepe confirmed that CAF is preparing comprehensive amendments to its competition regulations and will enforce tougher sanctions to prevent a recurrence of the “irregularities” that marred the January final.

This move follows a controversial ruling by the CAF Appeal Board which stripped Senegal of the title and awarded it to Morocco after Senegalese players briefly left the pitch to protest a late penalty decision.

The CAF President emphasized that the continental body will strictly abide by the upcoming ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport, CAS, to definitively settle the dispute between Senegal and Morocco.

Motsepe expressed a commitment to protecting the integrity of the 54 member associations, stating it is the duty of the confederation to respect any decision issued by the court in Lausanne.

“We must await the final ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport, CAS. We are following the legal process and it is our duty to protect the integrity and reputation of the 54 member associations. We must respect any decision issued by the Court of Arbitration for Sport to settle the final dispute regarding 2025.”

Senegal has formally appealed the forfeit victory awarded to the host nation, describing the decision as unfair and unprecedented after they had initially won the match 1–0 on the field.

Amid mounting tensions, Motsepe also addressed growing calls for transparency regarding the governance of the tournament.

“It is a huge disappointment, and we are currently preparing comprehensive amendments to the competition’s laws and regulations.” He added that future sanctions will be tougher, designed to safeguard the credibility of African football, enforce compliance, and protect the sport’s reputation.”

According to Leadership News, the CAF chief welcomed independent investigations into any allegations of corruption, asserting a ‘zero tolerance’ policy within the organization.

During his visit, which also included a stop in Dakar to meet with Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Motsepe urged for unity and called on fans to shift their focus toward supporting African teams at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite the boardroom battle, Motsepe praised the organization of the 2025 edition, calling it the most successful in the competition’s history due to its world-class infrastructure.

Every aspect, the hotels, the stadiums, and every detail, was of the highest standard, so I consider it an exceptionally successful edition.”

Reuters noted that while the tournament achieved record revenues and attendance, the focus remains on legal clarity as the football world awaits the final CAS verdict.

Motsepe concluded his address by warning against misinformation and reiterating that the upcoming regulatory reforms are designed to safeguard the credibility of African football both at home and on the global stage.

The Confederation of African Football, (CAF) Appeal Board has overturned the outcome of the final match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) between hosts, Morocco and Senegal.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the CAF Appeal Board ruled that, in accordance with Article 84 of the AFCON regulations, the match is to be recorded as a 3–0 victory in favour of the Atlas Lions of Morocco.

The decision followed an appeal lodged by the Moroccan football federation challenging earlier rulings by the CAF Disciplinary Board.

The Appeal Board set aside the initial decision and upheld Morocco’s protest, finding that the conduct of the Senegal team breached Articles 82 and 84 of the competition regulations.

According to the ruling, the actions of the Senegal side, under the authority of the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF), constituted an infringement warranting forfeiture of the final match.

In addition to the main decision, the Appeal Board also issued several related rulings.

Morocco’s player, Ismaël Saibari, was found guilty of misconduct.

However, his punishment was reduced to a two-match suspension, with one match suspended, while an earlier fine of 100,000 US dollars imposed on him was cancelled.

The board also held the Moroccan federation responsible for misconduct involving ball boys during the match, reducing the fine in that regard to 50,000 US dollars.

A separate fine of 100,000 US dollars related to interference around the VAR review area was upheld.

Furthermore, a penalty imposed over a laser incident was reduced to 10,000 US dollars.

CAF stated that all other motions and requests for relief by the parties involved were dismissed.

The ruling brings a dramatic conclusion to one of the most contentious finals in AFCON history, with Morocco now officially recognised as winners of the 2025 tournament following the administrative decision.

Iran has asked FIFA to move its 2026 World Cup games from the United States to Mexico due to the conflict in the Middle East, Iran’s embassy in Mexico.

Iran’s participation at this summer’s finals in the United States, Canada, and Mexico has been thrown into doubt since the war began late last month.

“When US President Donald Trump has explicitly stated that he cannot ensure the security of the Iranian national team, we will certainly not travel to America,” Iranian football Chief Mehdi Taj said in remarks posted on the embassies X account.

“We are currently negotiating with FIFA to hold Iran’s matches in the World Cup in Mexico.”

Iran are scheduled to face New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, followed by Egypt in Seattle.

The team’s base camp for the tournament is currently slated to be located in Tucson, Arizona.

Abolfazl Pasandideh, Iran’s ambassador to Mexico, on Monday denounced “the US government’s lack of cooperation regarding visa issuance and the provision of logistical support” for the Iranian delegation ahead of the World Cup, in a statement published on the embassy’s website.

He added that he had also “suggested to FIFA that Iran’s matches be moved from the United States to Mexico.”

FIFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump triggered uproar last week after stating that while Iran’s football team would be “welcome” in the United States, they should not travel to the tournament “for their own life and safety.”

Trump’s comments came after FIFA president Gianni Infantino had given assurances that Trump had promised him that the Iranian team would be welcome.

Iran hit back at Trump’s comments saying “no one can exclude Iran’s national team from the World Cup.”

Iran’s place at the tournament was thrown into question after the United States and Israel launched a massive offensive against the Islamic Republic, which responded with waves of missiles and drones targeting Israeli territory and American targets across the Middle East.

Super Eagles forward Samuel Chukwueze has lost his mother, Mrs Sarah Chukwueze.

Although Samuel himself did not initially confirm the development, his brother, David Chukwueze, shared the news in a series of emotional posts on Instagram, paying tribute to their late mother.

According to the posts, the family is struggling to come to terms with the loss.

In one post, David wrote, “Can’t even post your picture to say RIP mum.”

In another, he said, “My forever love just left me without saying goodbye.”

He also noted, “You didn’t even carry your grandchild.”

The National Sports Commission later confirmed the development in a statement issued on Thursday, saying Mrs Chukwueze died after a brief illness.

“The National Sports Commission is deeply saddened by the confirmed passing of Mrs Sarah Chukwueze, mother of Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze,” the statement read.

It noted that the death had been publicly announced by members of the Chukwueze family.

“The Commission has been informed that Mrs Chukwueze passed away following a brief illness, a loss that has been publicly shared by members of the Chukwueze family,” it added.

The NSC extended its condolences to the footballer and his family, describing the late Mrs Chukwueze as a strong support figure in her son’s career.

“Across the landscape of Nigerian sport, the role of family remains central to the character and resilience shown by many of our elite athletes. Mrs Chukwueze’s influence on the personal journey of her son and her support for his professional pursuit are acknowledged and respected by the sports community,” the Commission stated.

It added that it stood in solidarity with the Super Eagles winger during the period of mourning.

“The National Sports Commission stands in solidarity with Samuel Chukwueze and offers support to him and his family at this difficult time,” the statement said.

Details surrounding her illness were not disclosed.

Chukwueze, who featured for the Super Eagles at the recent Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where Nigeria finished third, has yet to issue a public statement on the loss.

The development comes just two days after Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi lost his father, Sunday Ndidi, in a road accident in Delta State.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has suspended Head Coach of Senegal’s Teranga Lions, Pape Thiaw, following chaotic scenes during Sunday’s final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Senegal emerged champions of Africa after defeating the host nation, the Atlas Lions of Morocco, in a tense and controversial final played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat.

The match ended goalless in regulation time before Pape Gueye struck four minutes into extra time to give Senegal a decisive 1–0 lead.

However, drama erupted deep into second-half stoppage time when Morocco were awarded a penalty.

The decision triggered heated protests, culminating in Coach Pape Thiaw ordering Senegalese players to walk off the pitch in protest.

The situation threatened to derail the final before Senegal captain and star forward, Sadio Mané, intervened and persuaded his teammates to return from the dressing room, allowing the match to be concluded.

CAF’s decision to suspend Coach Thiaw followed a review of the incident, citing breaches of conduct and failure to uphold the integrity of the game during a high-profile continental final.

Despite the controversy, Senegal held on to secure their AFCON crown, sealing a historic triumph marked by both footballing excellence and dramatic confrontation.

The Teranga Lions of Senegal are champions of Africa, defeating host nation Morocco 1–0 in a dramatic 2025 AFCON final in Rabat.

Pape Gueye struck the decisive goal in the 94th minute of extra time at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium to seal Senegal’s second title in four years.

Senegal had a goal in regulation time disallowed after Ismaila Sarr’s effort was ruled out for a foul in the buildup.

Drama deepened in the 97th minute when Morocco were awarded a penalty, sparking chaotic scenes as Senegalese players briefly walked off in protest before being recalled by Sadio Mane.

Brahim Diaz’s spot kick was, however, brilliantly saved by Edouard Mendy, forcing extra time.

Gueye’s thunderous strike later proved decisive, extending Morocco’s AFCON title drought to 49 years.

The Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has commended the Super Eagles of Nigeria for their performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where the team won the bronze medal.

Governor Abiodun described the team’s outing as a display of courage, resilience, and national pride, noting that the Super Eagles played some of the most dominant football at the tournament.

In a statement, the governor said the team remained unbeaten in regulation time throughout the competition, winning all their matches except the semi-final, which was decided on penalties.

He noted that Nigeria recorded the highest number of goals in the group stage and conceded no goals in the knockout rounds before the semi-final, describing the achievement as a reflection of discipline and quality.

The governor also praised the team’s mental strength, particularly their victory over Egypt in the third-place match, despite what he described as unfavourable officiating and a hostile atmosphere during the semi-final clash against Morocco.

According to him, the performance of the Super Eagles rekindled national pride and reaffirmed Nigeria’s rich football heritage on the continental stage.

Governor Abiodun said members of the Southern Governors’ Forum and Nigerians across the country were proud of the team’s determination and fighting spirit.

He added that although the Super Eagles fell short of reaching the final, their elimination on penalties underscored the fine margins in football.

The Ogun State governor expressed optimism about the future of the national team, saying the Super Eagles and their head coach, Mr Eric Chelle, had renewed hope among Nigerians and laid a solid foundation for future successes.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria defeated Pharaohs of Egypt 4–2 on penalties to win bronze at the 2025 African Cup of Nations, AFCON in Casablanca after a goalless, VAR-marred playoff.

Super Eagles Coach, Eric Chelle, rotated his squad, leaving Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman on the bench, while Akor Adams and Paul Onuachu led the line.

Nigeria twice thought they had scored: Adams’ 36th-minute header was ruled out after VAR showed Onuachu fouled in the build-up, while Lookman later saw his strike chalked off for offside.

With chances limited and defences on top, the game went to penalties.

Super Eagles’ Stanley Nwabali then took centre stage, saving efforts from Mohamed Salah and Oumar Marmoush before Lookman fired the winning kick.

The victory secured Nigeria’s ninth AFCON third-place finish and maintained their perfect record in bronze-medal playoffs.

The final of the 2025 AFCON will be decided on Sunday as the Teranga Lions of Senagal take on hosts, Atlas Lions of Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat by 8:00pm.

The Super Eagles, who were hoping to continue their perfect record in the ongoing tournament, were second best all through the game as they battled to a goalless draw in regulation time.

Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemeachi both missed their spot kicks as Nigeria fell to a 4-2 defeat to Morocco.

The Super Eagles will now settle for a third place battle on Saturday with Egypt, who had earlier lost 1-0 to Senegal in the first semi final game.
