Boxing heavyweight legend, George Foreman has died, aged 76.

Known as Big George in the ring, the American built one of the most remarkable and enduring careers in the sport, winning Olympic gold in 1968 and claiming the world heavyweight title twice, 21 years apart – the second making him the oldest champion in history aged 45.

He lost his first title to Muhammad Ali in their famous Rumble in the Jungle fight in 1974.

But overall, he boasted an astonishing total of 76 wins including 68 knockouts, almost double that of Ali.

Foreman retired in 1997 but not before he agreed to put his name to a best-selling grill – a decision that went on to bring him fortunes that dwarfed his boxing earnings.

His family said in a post on Instagram on Friday night: “Our hearts are broken. A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose.”

The statement added: “A humanitarian, an Olympian, and two time heavyweight champion of the world, He was deeply respected – a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name – for his family.

“Tributes poured in from others across the sport, with former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson saying Foreman’s “contribution to boxing and beyond will never be forgotten”.

The Ring magazine, often dubbed the Bible of Boxing, described him as “one of the greatest heavyweights of all time”.

“[He] will be remembered as an icon of the sport forever.”

Foreman was born in Marshall, Texas, on 10 January 1949, and raised along with six siblings by a single mother in the segregated American South.

He dropped out of school and turned to street robberies before eventually finding his outlet in the ring.

World number one, Jannik Spinner has accepted an immediate three-month ban from tennis after reaching a settlement with the World Anti-Doping Agency, (Wada), over his two positive drugs test last year.

The 23-year-old Italian, who last month won the Australian Open, is suspended from 9 February until 4 May.

He will be eligible to play in the year’s next Grand Slam event, the French Open, which starts on 19 May.

In a statement on Saturday, Wada, which had appealed against the decision to clear Sinner to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas), says it accepts his explanation that he was inadvertently contaminated with the banned substance clostebol by his physiotherapist.
The body accepts the three-time Grand Slam champion “did not intend to cheat”, that the drug “did not provide any performance-enhancing benefit” and this happened “without his knowledge as the result of negligence of members of his entourage”.

It added: “However, under the code and by virtue of Cas precedent, an athlete bears responsibility for the entourage’s negligence. Based on the unique set of facts of this case, a three-month suspension is deemed to be an appropriate outcome.”

In a statement released by his lawyers, Sinner said: “This case had been hanging over me for nearly a year and the process still had a long time to run with a decision maybe only at the end of the year.

“I have always accepted that I am responsible for my team and realise Wada’s strict rules are an important protection for the sport I love. On that basis I have accepted Wada’s offer to resolve these proceedings on the basis of a three-month sanction.”

Tennis has seen some high profile doping cases over the past six months, with leading female player Iga Swiatek accepting a one-month suspension in November after testing positive for a banned substance when she was world number one.

Sinner had previously been cleared of any wrongdoing by an independent panel after testing positive for the banned steroid clostebol in March 2024.

It had been accepted that he had been inadvertently contaminated by his physiotherapist, who was treating a cut on his hand with an over-the-counter spray, which was later found to contain the banned substance.

The International Tennis Integrity Agency said in August that the panel found Sinner bore “no fault or negligence” for testing positive for low levels of a metabolite of clostebol – a steroid that can be used to build muscle mass.

But Wada lodged an appeal with Cas last September stating at the time the finding of “no fault or negligence” was not correct under the applicable rules and it sought a ban of between one and two years, with a hearing scheduled for 16-17 April.

This has led to Sinner accepting the ban and the next tournament he can play in is the Italian Open, which begins on 7 May.

He will miss prestigious hard court tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami in the US, plus many of the clay tournaments that build-up to the French Open.

Wada says Sinner can return to “official training activity” from 13 April.

Also, a grassroots coach, Mr Femi Bamigboye said Nigerian coaches should have been considered if they applied for the job instead of the Malian.

Mr Bamigboye who is the founder of Remo Football Academy said he could only wish the new coach well since NFF had  confirmed his appointment

Éric Sékou Chelle is a professional football manager and a former player who played as a centre-back.

*For Ancelotti, it is fifth win as coach

Real Madrid rode their luck and overcame an outstanding challenge from Borussia Dortmund to win the Champions League at Wembley.

Carlo Ancelotti wrote more history with his fifth win as coach in the competition, while Real claimed the crown for the 15th time in trademark fashion as they survived a torrid first half and several missed opportunities from Dortmund before coming out on top.

Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi missed two first-half chances and striker Niclas Fullkrug hit the post, with recalled Real keeper Thibaut Courtois also providing a formidable barrier.

Real, inevitably, raised the stakes, with Dani Carvajal glancing home a header from a corner 16 minutes from time before Vinicius Jr raced clear on to Jude Bellingham’s pass to add a second nine minutes later.

It crowned a glorious first season at Real for England’s Bellingham, but it was a night of disappointment for compatriot Jadon Sancho, who is on loan to Dortmund from Manchester United.

Real Madrid’s late surge to claim another victory in Europe’s elite tournament carried an air of inevitability as they proved they are a ruthless winning machine when it comes to the Champions League.

As they have done previously in the competition this season, and in seasons before, Real stumbled along in the first half as they were pinned back by the intensity of Borussia Dortmund’s approach.

Real barely put together an attack worthy of the name while hanging on by the skin of their teeth at the other end, with Dortmund creating chances but crucially wasting them.

When that happens, as Liverpool and others have found before them in Champions League finals, there is normally only one outcome.

Match-winner Vinicius Jr was surrounded after the victory

And so it proved as Real, with keeper Courtois fully justifying Ancelotti’s decision to pick him ahead of Andriy Lunin, picked up a head of steam to strike those two late blows to the heart of brave Borussia.

Many will wonder quite how Real Madrid do it when they seem out of sorts so often. But muscle memory kicks in with these great players, as the departing Toni Kroos, Carvajal, Nacho and late substitute Luka Modric claimed Champions League winners’ medals for the sixth time.

As for the peerless Ancelotti, as impassive as ever, he continued his incredible record at the helm of this great club.

It was a quiet night for Bellingam, who missed a big chance before setting up Vinicius Jr for the second. But what a campaign he has had since joining Real from Dortmund.

England will hope this sets up their young superstar perfectly for Euro 2024.

Manchester United ended a poor season on a huge high as the team secure a shock FA Cup final win against rivals Manchester City.

Manchester United upset Manchester City 2-1 in the final of the FA Cup, held at Wembley Stadium, London, England on Saturday.

In a match which most people expected to be a foregone conclusion, United showed their mettle by beating favourites and ending City’s hopes of becoming the first team in history to repeat as Premier League and the FA Cup winners in consecutive years.

By winning the FA Cup, United have received passage into next season’s Europa League.

Alejandro Garnacho put United ahead following a mix-up between City’s Josko Gvardiol and Stefan Ortega.

Fellow teenager, Kobbie Mainoo slotted in the second following a slick team move and an exquisite pass from United captain Bruno Fernandez.

Jeremy Doku scored for Manchester City in the later stages to set up a nervy ending to the match.

City looked the more threatening side in the manner in which they commanded possession and dominated the United end.

However, United were clinical with the precious few chances they were afforded to finish as victors.

With this victory United are now 13-time winners of the FA Cup, just one behind Arsenal with the most FA Cup titles by a single club.

The English season officially comes to a close with City just missing out on becoming the first English side to achieve consecutive doubles.

The Federal Government has approved January, 2025, as the official month for the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, tagged, “Gateway Games, Ogun 2024”.

The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh announced the date in a communique issued at the end of the first National Council on Sports, held in Abakaliki, Enugu State

Senator Enoh noted that the National Sports Festival played a vital role in national unity, while also increasing socio-economic growth for the sustainable development of the state and the country in general.

He called on the Federal and state governments to bid and host national and international sports competitions, to fast-track the development of sports in the country.

While urging all key stakeholders to play active roles towards the successful hosting of the Gateway Games, the Sports Minister informed that the Council of Sports was in support of the establishment of Sports Development and Investment Fund, NSIDF, for its attendant benefits in driving sports development in Nigeria.

Fielding questions from journalists shortly after meeting, Ogun State Commissioner for Sports Development, Mr Wasiu Isiaka, expressed the state government’s readiness to host the successful Festival.

Mr Isiaka noted that the NSF embodied capacity to bring people together, foster teamwork, cooperation, instil values of discipline and perseverance, encouraging youths to embrace sports for socio-economic development of the state, adding that targeted funding and incentives were crucial for driving grassroots sports engagements and ensuring the sustainability of sports programmes.

The Women’s World Cup will take place in South America for the first time after Brazil was chosen to host the 2027 edition at a FIFA congress Friday marked by debate about the war in Gaza.

After the success of Australia and New Zealand last year, FIFA members picked Brazil over a European bid in a push to expand women’s football to new continents.

Delegates while meeting in Bangkok voted 119 votes to 78 to send the 10th Women’s World Cup to the land of Samba Football, beating a joint bid from Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany.

The decision sparked celebrations from the Brazilian bid team.

Brazilian Football Confederation President, Ednaldo Rodrigues, hailed it as a “victory for Latin American football and for women’s football in Latin America”.

Brazil, home of women’s football great Marta, scored higher than its European rival in FIFA’s evaluation report.

FIFA inspectors had noted that South America hosting the Women’s World Cup would have “tremendous impact on women’s football in the region”.

Brazil’s bid includes 10 stadiums used for the men’s World Cup in 2014, with Rio de Janeiro’s famous Maracana lined up for the opening match and final.

But work needs to be done, in particular to the Amazonia stadium in Manaus which has stood almost unused for a decade.

Unlike their male counterparts, who have won five World Cups, Brazil’s women have never lifted the trophy and made a group-stage exit in 2023.

The 74th FIFA Congress, which was making its debut in Thailand, made its choice by open vote for the first time as the organisation seeks to move on from the corruption and shady dealing that dogged it in the past.

Delegates had their choice simplified last month when the United States and Mexico withdrew their joint bid, deciding instead to focus on trying to win the right to stage the 2031 edition.

As the Brazil tournament approaches, the focus will be on the huge financial disparity between men’s and women’s football.

Prize money for the 2023 Women’s World Cup was a record $110 million, but that was still far short of the $440 million on offer to teams at the 2022 men’s finals in Qatar.

The congress also heard a call from the Palestinian FA (PFA) to suspend Israel from the world body and ban Israeli teams from FIFA events.

PFA head Jibril Rajoub said the Israeli FA (IFA) had broken FIFA rules, adding: “FIFA cannot afford to remain indifferent to these violations or to the ongoing genocide in Palestine.”

His Israeli counterpart Shino Moshe Zuares rejected the call as “cynical, political and hostile”, insisting the IFA had not broken any FIFA rules.

FIFA supremo Gianni Infantino said the body would take independent legal advice on the matter and decide by July 20 what action to take, if any.

2023 Women’s World Cup Showed Improved Standards

Last year’s tournament set records, including earning $570 million in commercial revenue.

On the pitch it defied fears that increasing the size from 24 to 32 teams would dilute the spectacle, with over 1.4 million fans streaming through the turnstiles to witness a host of shocks.

Gone were the lopsided scorelines that were a feature of previous World Cups, reflecting a growth in the standard of women’s football.

Seven teams notched their first World Cup wins and the United States and Germany, who between them had won six of the previous eight tournaments, were both dumped out early.

… To Engage the Nation’s Wounded and Injured soldiers

The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex have arrived at the Nigerian Armed Forces’ Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

The Duke and Duchess arrived the DHQ at about 12:45 pm on Friday.

The military high command had on Thursday revealed that their visit to Nigeria will focus on engaging with the nation’s wounded and injured soldiers and their families.

Prince Harry’s decision to visit Nigeria followed an invite by the military high command following the nation’s debut appearance at the 2023 Invictus Games, held in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry In 2014 is an international multi-sport event for Wounded, Injured and Sick military personnel that offers support, recovery pathways and rehabilitation for the personnel, post-injury.

According to the Director of Sports, Defence Headquarters, Air Vice Marshal, Abidemi Marquis, “80 per cent” of the nation’s soldiers have been involved in the recovery programme and “are doing better”.

The focal point of the visit is for the wounded and injured soldiers as a result of our engagement in counterterrorism operations,” Marquis said, noting that part of his visit would entail interacting with the WIS military personnel which will in turn boost their mental health and self-esteem.

The military high command also hopes to host the Invictus Games in Nigeria and believes that Prince Harry’s visit will facilitate the establishment of the proposed Invictus Games Centre in Abuja, and a collaborative effort with the Foundation to gain knowledge of the recovery programme.

This centre according to Marquis, will be built and equipped to provide a holistic service for the management of the WIS military personnel.

The proposed centre, according to him would also accommodate a medical centre and a mini hotel for their families during the recovery programme. It is also designed to accommodate a sporting centre.

Speaking to journalists earlier, Prince Harry’s friend and Director at the Invictus Games Foundation, David Wiseman commented on the significance of the trip.

Wiseman said, “We’re going over to Nigeria over the next few days and we’re going over to see the progress that’s being made with regards to establishing and developing sports recovery in that nation and celebrating that incredible progress that they have been made.”

The DHQ expressed its delight to host the Duke, and his wife, Meghan who in 2022, told listeners to her Archetype podcast that she was “43 per cent Nigerian” after doing a genealogy test.

Interestingly, at the opening ceremony of the 2023 Invictus Games in Germany, Prince Harry referred to the podcast as he hailed Nigeria along with Colombia and Israel for sending its first delegation to the games for WIS military personnel.

Meghan was seen seated near the Nigeria team whom she previously revealed she was supporting. The Sussexes later met the members of the team, and both were presented with a plaque from the nation’s military high command.

Meghan was given a Nigerian title name — Amira Ngozi Lolo — Amira meaning a warrior princess — Ngozi meaning Blessed and Lolo, a royal wife.
