Students of the University of Ibadan on Monday continued their protests over the unresolved issues between the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU and the federal government which led to the closure of federal and some state universities in the country three months ago.

The students continued their protest with the blockage of the highway linking Sango, Bodija and Ojoo.

The blockage of the highway led to a traffic jam around the institution’s main gate as motorists try to maneuver their way out of the scene.

Speaking with Radio Nigeria, one of the leaders of the protesting students, a three hundred level student in the Department of Sociology, Mr James Azubuike said the federal government was more concerned about election rather than their education.

Mr Azubuike who said the protest would be taken to the Iwo Road interchange, noted that the students had their means of identification on them to prevent hoodlums from hijacking the protest.

Radio Nigeria observed that men of Nigeria Police, Operation Burst and Oyo State Security Network code-named “Amotekun” were on ground to ensure orderliness.

Our correspondent also observed that the protest had caused traffic jam in most of the narrow roads within Orogun and Agbowo axis of Ibadan.

Similar, following a protest embarked upon by students of the polytechnic Ibadan today, the institutions second semester examination have been suspended pending the time when the crises is resolved.
The public relations officer of the institution, Alhaji Soladoye Adewale stated this while reacting to the student’ protest.
Alhaji Soladoye said significant percentage of the students have neither paid their tuition fees nor completed their registration saying computing their result would be difficult.

“A very high percentage of them are owing tuition fees.

“Exam for full time is expected to start today while part-time students were writing before and we had to suspend the exam to compel them to pay the tuition fee.

“The Institution’s provided a lenient process in payment of their fees which is done twice 60% first and 40% thereafter but many of them have not paid their tuition fee. without payment, it is not possible to complete registration”

“But as it stands now, all examinations has been suspended by the Management.”

Alhaji Soladoye said sufficient grace have been given the students while the students have been told severally to fine tune their registration records in the institution.
Students of the institution shutdown academic activities within the campus while the institution’s main gate was locked.

The Federal government has been urged to accede to the demands by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to prevent irregular academic calendars in Nigerian universities.

The Assistant General Overseer in charge of African Mission of the Gospel Faith Mission International, Pastor Samuel Okomolehin gave the charge in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Ibadan.

Pastor Okomolehin who lamented incessant strikes by ASUU, said adequate funding of Nigerian universities was inevitable if the nation’s institution of higher learning must be at par with its counterparts in the developed country.

The clergyman urged the striking lecturers and federal government to return to the negotiation table with a view to resolving the lingering conflict.

Speaking ahead of the 2023 general elections, Pastor Okomolehin said aspiring politicians should abide by the rules guiding the electoral process rather than seeing it as a do-or-die affair.

Pastor Okomolehin who appealed to politicians to have a heart of service towards the masses, urged current political office holders to shun corruption and focus more on people-oriented policies and programmes.

On March 23 when the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, began its industrial action, many students felt it was not going to last long but this was not the case as the strike lingered beyond earlier expectations.

Several meetings and discussions between the federal government and ASUU deadlocked, a situation that caused most students and parents serious distress.

Different protests and Social media campaigns were launched to pressure ASUU into ending the strike action.

After eight long months after, the industrial action has eventually been called off.
How did the students receive the news and what were their expectations?

A cross-section of university students in Ibadan gave different submissions.

Some parents who spoke with Radio Nigeria called on ASUU to ensure academic activities resume intensively in order to make up for lost time.

The parents also expressed worry that the length of the industrial action would impact negatively on the lives of the students.
They also implored the students to focus on their education.

An educationist, Dr Fasasi noted that calling off the strike was good news but urged school authorities to maintain a normal calendar for qualitative education.

He then urged the government to always honour its agreements with the union while advising the unions to be considerate in their demands.

Dr Fasasi also charged students be more dedicated and diligent in their academics.

Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has suspended its 9-month-old strike after exhaustive deliberations with the federal government.

The union suspended the strike following its National Executive Council, NEC meeting, held at the Comrade Festus Iyayi National Secretariat Complex on Tuesday, 22nd December, 2020.

The National President of ASUU, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi who announced the suspension in Abuja said the union and the federal government unanimously resolved the seven contentious issues that led to the strike.

Professor Ogunyemi said the resolved issues are Funding for Revitalization of Public Universities, Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), Salary Shortfall, State Universities, Visitation Panels, Reconstitution of the Government Renegotiating Team and the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

Professor Ogunyemi stressed that to avoid further strike in the university system, the union expects government to faithfully implement all the agreements reached and signed and release EAA as agreed, and the mainstreaming of EAA into annual budget using the agreed formula.

Similarly, he urged the government to expedite action on the test process and ensure the deployment of UTAS for the payment of salaries in the university system while expressing the need for the FGN/ASUU re-negotiation exercise to conclude as specified in the timelines agreed by both parties.

ASUU embarked on an indefinite strike on 23rd March, 2020.
