One of the greatest things in life is taking time to appreciate people, be it as an individual, family or organisation, for the impact such people have made.

So it was with the News Department of Radio Nigeria, Ibadan, when it gathered on Thursday at Studio One of the Broadcasting House to recognise and thank some people who had made significant contributions to the department.

The occasion was the department’s annual appreciation day, which brought together dignitaries from all walks of life including retired and serving members of staff of the department.

Special recognition was accorded to general managers and overseers of Premier FM, Ibadan, Asabari FM, Saki, Positive FM, Akure and retired management staff of the corporation, including Pastor Dare Olorunfemi, Elder Adenrele Ajisefini, Mr Ayodele Aliyu, Alhaji Bashir Omotosho, Mr Femi Oladipo, Pastor Tunji Ogungbade and Mr Steven James.

It was also an occasion to honour a retiring Deputy Director of News and the General Manager, Radio Nigeria Paramount FM, Abeokuta, Mr. Akinyinka Akintola, during a special editorial conference.

Mr Akintola, who was visibly elated, thanked the news management and staff for honouring him.

As a token of appreciation, special awards were presented to outstanding individuals in recognition of their invaluable contributions to the News Department of Radio Nigeria, Ibadan.

They include Osun State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Reverend Bunmi Jenyo and a member representing Iwo, Ayedire, Olaoluwa Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr Lukman Mudashiru, popularly called L and K.

Other award recipients are Engineer Kazeem Suleiman and Zonal Youth leader, South West, Myetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, Alhaji Aliyu Saliu, while the royal father of the day was Olupo of Olupona, Oba Abdul Rafiu Oyekanmi.

Speaking on behalf of the award recipients, Reverend Bunmi Jenyo lauded the immeasurable contributions of Radio Nigeria, Ibadan, to society.

The ceremony was not without a call from the Zonal Director, FRCN, Ibadan Zonal Station, Mr Dominic Mokikan, to individuals and corporate organisations for continuous partnership with the station.

Mr Mokikan gave assurance that with the wider reach Radio Nigeria, Ibadan had, it would continue to disseminate information to the nooks and crannies of the zone.

He lauded the invaluable contributions of members of the public to the station, including their unwavering support even in times of challenges.

In a remark, the Deputy Director News and Current Affairs Department, Mr. Adewumi Faniran, thanked the guests for honouring the department.

He assured that the station would always disseminate unbiased and factual news to the public.

Brightville College Ibadan has emerged as the Oyo State champions of the FRCN Ibadan Kids Football Challenge. 

The Ibadan Zone Champions defeated Oyo Zone Champions, Ilora Community Commercial High School by two goals to nothing in the final which was played at the University of Ibadan Football Field. 

Earlier, Oliver Baptist High School, Oyo who came second in Oyo Zone had won the third-place match of the tournament.

The Oyo side came from one goal down to defeat Loyola College, Ibadan who are runners-up from Ibadan Zone by two goals to one. 

David Ogunwuyi from Olivet Baptist High School won the best player award, Quyun Olasupo from Brightville College won the best goalkeeper award while Isaac John from Brightville College was the highest goal scorer with seven goals. 

Speaking with newsmen, Zonal Director, FRCN, Ibadan, Mrs Bolatito Joseph said the football tournament would be held annually.

Mrs Joseph appealed to parents and school proprietors to encourage children to participate in sports due to its numerous benefits. 

She commended the local organizing committee of the tournament headed by Deputy Director Marketing of the Corporation, Mr Wale Afinjuomo for a successful outing.

Present at the closing ceremony were former deputy speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, OHSA, Mr Babatunde Olaniyan, Deputy Director, Engineering Services, FRCN Ibadan, Engineer Gabriel Ajayi, General Manager, Premier FM, Alhaji Bashir Omotosho, Deputy Director, Finance, Mr James Amole and football administrators.

Olaolu Fawole
