Nigerians have been encouraged to contribute to national growth and development and make conscious efforts to be a blessing to fellow county men.

The Diocesan Bishop of Ijebu Anglican Diocese, The Right Reverend Peter Oludipe gave the charge while delivering a sermon at the funeral service for Chief Duro Onabule, a veteran journalist and former Chief Press Secretary to the Erstwhile Military President Ibrahim Babangida. 

Addressing the gathering at the Cathedral of Our Saviour, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Bishop Oludipe who described the late veteran journalist as an icon, hardworking and a goal-getter urged Nigerians to always endeavour to touch the lives of others positively.

The Diocesan Bishop who noted that life remained transient and short and everyone would die at God’s appointed time, equally charged Nigerians to be accountable as no mortal could escape death.

The Clergyman appealed to Nigerian leaders to show more love and care to the citizens while advising the people to pray for credible leaders ahead of the 2023 general elections and also vote for the right persons. 

In a message to the event, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed described the late Chief Onabule as an individual who was humble, honest and down to earth.

The minister who was represented by the Acting Director General, Nigeria Television Authority, Mallam Abdulhamid Dembos also identified Chief Odubule as an intelligent human being and a great motivator.

The first son of the deceased, Mr Babatunde Onabule in a tribute maintained that the values learnt from his father had kept him going and had shaped his life positively.

The remains of Chief Onabule who died at the age of eighty-three were later laid to rest at a private burial witnessed by family members.

Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Muhammed has called on the Journalists in the country to take responsibility for news materials they push to the society.

The Minister gave the charge while speaking at the 3rd Nigeria Union of Journalists National Conference holding in Port Harcourt, River State.

The minister, represented by the Director, NTA Port Harcourt Centre,  Mrs. Bosede Adebayo, urged journalists to always consider the implications of the news materials being published noting that journalists have the roles to ensure peaceful society.

He commended the Nigeria Union of Journalists for putting together a conference to reawaken their members on their responsibilities to the society.

Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu in a keynote address said the current situation required serious assessment noting that the security challenges was due to the inaction of the state actors to deal decisively with criminality at infancy stage

Governor Ikpeazu urged the media to focus less on negativity urging while not hesitating to expose social injustice and other vices capable of hindering national development. 

The National President of the NUJ, Chief Chris Isiguzo while speaking said the theme was chosen because of the pivotal role of the media in stabilising the polity, stressing that the issues of banditry and terrorism required collective efforts towards stopping the trend.

The Chairman on the occasion and former President of the Nigeria Bar Association, Mr. Onueze Okocha said journalism was in a vantage position to salvage the nation urging the media to live up to its responsibility of protecting the nation from falling.

The conference with the theme “The Media, Insecurity and National Unity” attracted six delegates from each of the thirty six state Councils of NUJ including the Chairmen and Secretaries.

Ogun State delegation was led by the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Mrs. Omolola Adeyinka.
