The All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Campaign Council, PCC in Oyo State has given an assurance that Thursday’s presidential rally in Ibadan will hold as scheduled.

The Director General, Oyo APC PCC, Dr Isiaka Kolawole gave the assurance at a news conference held at the party’s campaign office, Mokola, Ibadan.

Dr Kolawole accused some rival political parties in the state of sponsoring protests over the lingering fuel and naira scarcity in a bid to prevent the APC Presidential rally from holding in Oyo State.

He, however, insisted that no amount of sponsored protests would stop the party and its presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu from holding the rally.

Dr Kolawole said adequate security arrangements had been put in place to forestall break down of law and order before, during and after the presidential rally.

The Oyo APC PCC Director General said the party identifies and sympathizes with Nigerians over the non-availability of naira notes, stressing that the idea of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN to redesign some of the naira notes was good, but the process of implementation was faulty.

It would be recalled that the APC Presidential Rally, earlier scheduled to hold last week, had been rescheduled to hold on Thursday 15th February 2023, at the Mapo Hall in Ibadan.

The Supreme Court has affirmed Ahmed Lawan as the authentic Candidate for Yobe North Senatorial District.

In the lead judgement, Justice Centus Nweze faulted the approach of Bashir Machina in commencing the suit at the Federal High Court Damaturu division by way of originating summons and without oral evidence to prove allegations of fraud.

In the majority decision, the apex Court also set aside the decision of the Appeal Court, Gombe Division, which affirmed the decision of the trial court that declared Machina the Senatorial Candidate for Yobe North.

But in a dissenting decision by Justices Emmanuel Agim and Adamu Jauro, the apex Court said Ahmad Lawan never participated in the APC primary held on 28 May, as he withdrew voluntarily to participate in the presidential primary held on the 8 June 2022.

The minority decision held that in the conduct of another primary on June 9, 2022 where Lawan emerged was in breach of Section 84 (5) of the Electoral Act as the APC never cancelled that held on 28 May before organizing another.

Justice Centus Nweze who read the lead judgement, held that the decisions of the Federal High Court in Yobe and the Court of Appeal in Abuja were perverse and must be set aside.

He added that Mr Machina ought to have commenced his suit by a writ of summons going by the allegations of fraud levelled against the APC in transmitting Mr Lawan’s name to INEC.

But, two other members of the Supreme Court panel, Adamu Jauro and Emmanuel Agim, disagreed with the majority judgement.

In the lead dissenting judgement, Justice Adamu Jauro held that the APC “appeal is devoid of merit.” He slammed a N3 million fine against the APC in favour of Mr Machina.

Justice Emmanuel Agim while reading his dissenting view, says the APC’s primary election held on 9 June which produced Mr Lawal was an illegal contraption.

He noted that Mr Lawan’s withdrawal from the Yobe North Senatorial District race on12 May, to vie for the APC presidential ticket automatically disqualified the Senate President from the National Assembly election.

Mr Agim further adds the purported primary election held on 9 June, 2022, was a ruse as it was not monitored by INEC.

The lawmaker representing Oluyole Federal Constituency, Tolulope Akande-Sadipe, (APC) has urged the Federal Government to urgently construct pedestrian bridges along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway within the metropolis of Ibadan, Oyo State.

Akande-Sadipe, said this after she laid a copy of a petition from Concerned Youth for Welfarism before the house at plenary.

She noted that to save lives and improve the economic interactions of the people, the Federal Government should urgently construct pedestrian bridges at five locations on the expressway.

Rep. Akande-Sadipe said that Nigeria’s population growth and economic development require improved transport infrastructure, through investments in roads, railways, aviation, shipping and inland waterways.

She added that the population increase has spilt into some parts of Ibadan such that there is a major need to cross the highway for access to schools, homes, places of employment, and markets among others.

The Oluyole Federal Constituency representative however noted that Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is key for effectivehighway construction planning.

She said deaths attributed to the current state of the road could have been avoided if an EIA had been completed.

She further observed that the ongoing advocacy for the pedestrian bridges are being ignored by stakeholders who ought to take authoritative action to save lives.

“I am convinced that there is a need to construct pedestrian bridges along this expressway to save lives, reduce the sufferings of the people, improve economic interactions from both sides of the expressway and so on”, she said.

She opined that the ongoing construction on the expressway has become a potential death trap, saying “the ongoing construction of Lagos –Ibadan expressway does not make any arrangement for pedestrian bridges despite the safety implications”.

Akande-Sadipe, therefore, appealed to the Federal Government and the leadership of the House of Representatives to ensure immediate construction of pedestrian bridges along Technical University; Toll Gate, Ibadan; Fẹ́lẹ̀lẹ̀, Ìbàdàn; Sókà, Ìbàdàn; Sanyo, Ìbàdàn; Bólúwají, Ìbàdàn; Academy; and Eléruku.

She also called for the construction of two bridges between Muslim and Ọlọ́hun-Ṣògo, Ìbàdàn; two Bridges between Ọlọ́hun-Ṣògo and Ọ̀rẹ́-Méjì Bridges; Three Bridges between Ọ̀rẹ́-Méjì and Ìwó Road; Three Bridges between Ìwó Road and General Gas’ bridge; Five Bridges between General Gas and Ọ̀jọ́ọ.

In her words, “I urged the House to, as a matter of urgency call on the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to ensure it either compels the contractor to commence the construction of pedestrian bridges at the noted locations if already in the current scope of work, or to use any emergency means to effect a variation on the existing contract to accommodate same”.

She also urged the Honourable Minister and the Committee on Works to urgently intervene.

Usually, any year that precedes an election year is characterized by various memorable events.

2022 is no exception as the year can be termed as the election eve in Nigeria.

In this report, Political Correspondent Oluwakayode Banjo x-rays the major thrilling events in the country’s political landscape in 2022.

Being a year preceding the 2023 General Election, it did not take too long before 2022 began to witness controversies, tensions and thrilling activities in the political sphere.

As early as February, President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2022 into law.

Section 84, sub-section 12 of the Act barred political appointees from voting or contesting at party primaries, hence, some political appointees, who had ambitions for elective positions were left with no option but to resign from their current offices.

In the following month, precisely on the 26th of March, over 7,000 delegates converged on Eagles Square, Abuja, for the All Progressives Congress, APC National Convention where a Serving Senator, Abdullahi Adamu emerged as the National Chairman of the party.

On the 25th of May, the 2019 Vice Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP and Former Governor of Anambra State, Mr Peter Obi dumped the party, barely three days to its Presidential convention.

5 days later, Mr Obi emerged as the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, a development many tagged as the birth of a “third force” in the Nation’s Presidential race.

On the 28th of same month, PDP held its Presidential convention and Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerged as the party’s Presidential Flag bearer, which was greeted with grievances, especially from one of the aspirants and current Rivers State Governor, Nyesome Wike.

After the PDP Presidential convention, Governor Wike led the call for the resignation of Mr Iyiochia Ayu as the party’s National Chairman with claims that both the Presidential Candidate and the National Chairman should not come from the same zone.

In the midst of this controversial tussle in the PDP fold, the Ruling APC staged its own Presidential convention which was also not devoid of controversies, even before the exercise took place on the 8th of June.

Prior to the convention, on the 2nd of June, the now popular slogan “Emi L’okan” hit the political waves when Former Governor of Lagos state, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in an outburst address at the Presidential Lodge in Abeokuta, Ogun state, declared that it was his turn to clinch the ticket.

Asiwaju Tinubu eventually won the ticket, defeating the likes of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Immediate Past Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and many others to emerge as the APC Presidential candidate.

In Oyo state, however, the sitting Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde clinched the party’s ticket to run for a second term, while three-time Senator Teslim Folarin emerged as the Governorship candidate of the APC, a situation which led to the defection of Former Deputy Governor of CBN, Chief Bayo Adelabu and others to the Accord, where he became the Governorship flag bearer.

Also, in the year under review, Governorship elections were conducted in Ekiti and Osun states.

While Mr Biodun Oyebanji emerged as the Governor of Ekiti state, Senator Ademola Adeleke won the Gubernatorial election in Osun state.

On the 31st of July, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC suspended Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, while the collection of the Permanent Voter Cards, PVC, commenced on the 12th of this month.

Still with INEC, at least 8 offices of the commission in some states including Ogun, Osun, Imo, Ebonyi and Enugu were attacked.

Reviewing the year, a Political Scientist at Covenant University, Oya, Ogun state, Dr Moses Duruji said 2022 had truly set the tone for next year’s General elections, stressing that the electorates were optimistic that the elections would produce candidates of their choice.

Similarly, another Political Scientist, Dr Gbade Ojo pinpointed the agitation by the PDP G-5 Governors over the emergence of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as the party’s Presidential candidate.

Dr Ojo added that the year 2022 was a critical period in the Nation’s political circle.

The current vice chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo West Local Government Area, Alhaji Mumini Azeez, and Mr. Wumi Oladeji led hundreds of PDP leaders and members in Oyo Federal Constituency into the All Progressives Congress (APC) today at Oyo town in what had been described as serious depletion to the ranks of the ruling party in the state.

The loss of party faithful to Oyo APC did not only affect the PDP as leaders and members of the Accord Party, African Democratic party (ADC) and Action Democratic Party (ADP) also defected to further populate the Broom Party which has indicated its readiness to defeat all the candidates of other political parties in the 2023 general election.

The monumental welcoming of defectors into the APC took place at the Open Ground at Methodist Primary School, Apaara, Oyo.

Other defectors who moved into the APC with hundreds of their followers included Alhaja Ejide Saka (ADC), Mrs. Olawumi Kola (PDP), Mr. Nurudeen Abule (Accord), Mrs Olaide Akande Damo (ADP), Pastor Sulola Taiwo (Accord), Mrs Eniola Oyelere (Accord), Mr. Mustapha Sakiru, Mrs Fatimo (ADP) among others.

They were also received by the APC candidate for the Oyo Central Senatorial District, Dr. Yunus Akintunde, the House of Representatives candidate for Afijio/Atiba/Oyo East/Oyo West, Hon. (Prince) Akeem Adeyemi and Hon. Kazeem Tunde Arole.

Vice Chairman, PDP Oyo West, Alh. Azeez, described his former party as a haven of deceit where no reasonable citizen should ply his politics.

Former Chairman of Akinyele Local Government Area and the Deputy Director-General of Oyo APC 2023 Campaign Council, Asiwaju Yemi Aderibigbe, represented the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Sen. Teslim Folarin, at the ceremony was graced by other party leaders which including Alh. Tajudeen Olanite (State Secretary), Olawale Sadare (State Publicity Secretary), Alh. Yinka Folarin, Hon. Femi Akintunde, Hon. Segun Taiwo, Hon. Billy Ogundele, Chief Ogundijo Ogundiran, Chief E. O Olaoye, and Chief Sunday Elegbede.

Meanwhile, Oyo APC has faulted a story being circulated by the PDP that it masterminded the reported killing of one Mudashiru Baraka in Oyo town on Wednesday claiming that those making the accusation should be investigated if such ugly incident ever occurred as orchestrated.

Reacting to the development through its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, Oyo APC condemned what it described as the ruling party’s penchant for playing politics with issues relating to the security of lives and properties in the state.

“For the avoidance of doubt, some leaders of our great party (APC) were in Oyo town to welcome some defectors from the PDP, Accord and other parties. The ceremony went well and everybody present including some of our candidates and leaders as well as party supporters enjoyed the atmosphere which was devoid of violence or tension. We do not know of any violent attack recorded in Oyo town yesterday and as such, we urge the State Police Command to investigate the allegation with a view to establishing the fact and punishing the culprits, particularly those making false allegations against our Party.” Sadare said.

As a result of the loss suffered during the last July 16th gubernatorial Election to the opposition party, Peoples Democratic party in Osun State, the embattled All Progressive Congress (APC)  and the party’s factional group, Osun Progressive (TOP), have resolved to work together to rebuild the party.

Speaking during a chat with Journalists in Osogbo, one of the leaders of the Osun Progressives and the former Speaker, Osun State House of Assembly, Dr Najeem Salaam announced the dissolution of all factional tendencies of all shades in the party with the sole objective of harmonising the core Omoluabi Progressive on a rebuilding mission that would bring back leadership of the State.

It would be recalled that the All Progressive Congress ( APC)  and the Factional group, The progressive (TOP) had been at loggerheads before and during the last gubernatorial Election in the state.

According to him “We are hereby dissolving The Osun Progressives (TOP) and the faction of our Party associated with it to facilitate the unity of purpose that this time requires. For effective closure, we will have a truth and reconciliation forum within the party when fully restructured with a sole purpose of preventing any recurrence of the ugly past. “

“We are Omoluabi in politics and everything we do. Omoluabi is the Yoruba encapsulation of the total person. An Omoluabi is a person of honour and integrity. An Omoluabi is chivalrous, enlightened, spiritual, kind-hearted and public-spirited. An Omoluabi is not greedy, vicious, selfish or self-serving. Omoluabi personifies the very best of virtues.”

“We shall preach political virtue, in line with our tradition and relentlessly pursue public good – the greatest good for the greatest number. No one will be left behind on our watch. We will seek political power for service and we shall hold it in trust for the people. We shall continue our journey into greatness.”

Dr Salaam announced that as a Party “We are gathered here today, given the trajectory of our party and the electoral misfortune we suffered in the governorship election of July 16, 2022, leading to our painful loss, to espouse our resolve and the way forward. We are here to inform the generality of our members and admirers that the progressive party that promotes their interest, protects their values and guarantees their rights is alive and ready to champion their cause once again.”

He posited “Our party has a tradition of progressivism dating back to Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s Action Group in the First Republic. It metamorphosed to the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) in the Second Republic, coalesced into the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the aborted Third Republic and emerged as Alliance for Democracy (AD) in 1999.”

“It has since then transmuted into Action Congress (AC), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and now the All Progressives Congress (APC). Its name and the epoch notwithstanding, this tradition makes the people and their welfare the centre of politics and government. Whenever this tendency detracts from this raison d’etre, it loses power.”

He recalled how the progressive government of Awolowo’s AG provided free education, integrated rural development, quality healthcare delivery, and enhancement of agriculture and industrialisation which boosted the living standard of the people and created a 50-year development gap between the South-West and other regions.

He stressed that “this is our tradition, the tradition that brought us to power in 1999, returned us to power again in 2010 and kept us in power for three terms. Progressive governance in Osun, headed by our leader, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, gave the state its biggest development in all ramifications. We are going back to our roots. The present setback is a mere distraction.”

The ancient town of Oyo was on Monday besieged by thousands of supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who stormed the town for the official flag off of its campaign in Oyo state.

The roads leading to the Oba Adeyemi Arcade, the venue of the ceremony, witnessed usual vehicular and pedestrian movements.

Our Correspondent reports that the event was a four-in-one ceremony as it also featured the official presentation of the party’s flag to all its candidates, a zonal rally and the unveiling of the party’s manifesto ahead of the 2023 General elections.

While stating reasons why he wants to serve Oyo State, the APC Governorship candidate, Senator Teslim Folarin claimed that virtually all areas of governance in the state had not experienced meaningful progress in the last 3 and a half years.

Senator Folarin said with his vast experience, he would invest in policies that would drive economic development in Oyo state, if elected.

“For more than three years, all areas of governance in Oyo state have largely been kissing the canvas. From all indices, it is apparent our people, instead of enjoying dividends of democracy, are suffering from a government where institutional rigidity, exclusiveness, pervasive insecurity, policy summersaults reign supreme”

“With my robust administrative experience, unimpeded courage and strength of conviction, I am poised to invest in policies that will drive economic development, provide a sea of opportunities for the teeming populace, improve healthcare, agriculture, education and infrastructure so that our dear state can be an industrial hub”.

Senator Folarin vowed to work with other critical stakeholders in the state to deliver 85% of votes for Tinubu-Shettima on February 25, 2023.

Reacting to the recent delisting of about 50 secondary schools in Oyo state by WAEC, Senator Folarin blamed the present administration for the decline in the education sector.

It would be recalled that the West African Examination Council, WAEC recently delisted 50 secondary schools in Oyo state for their involvement in examination malpractice during the 2022 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations.

In his address, the party’s chairman in the state, Mr Isaac Omodewu expressed confidence that the PDP-led government in Oyo state would expire by 2023.

Mr Omodewu, on the occasion, also received 2000 decampees from the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP to the APC fold.

Dignitaries who graced the ceremony included

Senator Musiliu Obanikoro from Lagos state, Immediate Past Deputy Governor of Oyo state, Engineer Rauf Olaniyan, APC party leaders from across Oyo State, as well as candidates of the party from the state.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja, on Monday, upheld the judgement of the Federal High Court in Abuja declaring Bashir Machina as candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Yobe North Senatorial District.

APC had approached the appellate court seeking to set aside the judgment of lower court, insisting Ahmad Lawan, Nigeria’s Senate President, was the authentic Senatorial candidate for Yobe North in next year’s election.

After losing out in the APC presidential primary election in June, Mr Lawan, sought to clinch the party’s senatorial ticket to return to the upper legislative chamber in 2023.

But Mr Lawal did not participate in the original APC Yobe North primary held on 28 May, because he was contesting to be the party’s presidential candidate.

Having failed to secure his party’s nod to run for president, Mr Lawal tried to reclaim the party’s ticket for Yobe North, a district he has represented since 2007.

Delivering judgement on Monday, a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal in Abuja led by Monica Dongban-Mensem, who is the president of the court, held that the appeal was an abuse of court process.

“The 1st respondent (Machina) remains the Appellant (APC’s) candidate for Yobe North Senatorial District,” Mrs Dongban-Mensem said.

She said “The lower court was right when it held that the purported primary election held on 9 June was not monitored by INEC.”

“I find that the lower court properly evaluated all the issues raised before it. Therefore, all the issues are resolved against the appellant,” Mrs Dongban-Mensem said.

Dismissing the appeal, the appellate court awarded N1 million against the APC in favour of Mr Machina. The panel condemned the conduct of parallel primaries by political parties.Citing Section 84 (1) of the Electoral Act, Mrs Dongban-Mensem said, “The law is designed to check political parties’ act of impunity in the conduct of parallel primaries.”

The Federal High Court sitting in Damaturu has declared Bashir Sheriff Machina as the All Progressives Congress (APC) authentic senatorial candidate for Yobe North in the coming 2023 National Assembly elections.

The presiding judge, Justice Fadimatu Murtala directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accept and publish his name accordingly.

Machina and President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan who is representing Yobe North in the Senate have been at loggerheads for months over the ticket won by the former at the primary held on June 9, 2022.

Lawan had contested the presidential primary of the ruling party at about the same time as the senatorial primary won by Machina.

The President of the Senate, however, lost to Bola Tinubu, a development that forced him to jostle for the senatorial ticket but Machina insisted that he won’t step down.

Ahmed Lawan has been in the National Assembly as a federal lawmaker for 23 unbroken years.

Presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with some Christian clerics under the aegis of the Pentecostal Bishops Forum of Northern Nigeria.

At the meeting, Tinubu disclosed that his choice of a former governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima was not a threat to the Christian community.

He added that his decision was based on competence and not religious considerations, adding that only competence can resolve the political and socio-economic challenges bedevilling the nation.

The APC presidential candidate said he has always been a friend of the Christian community and he should be considered based on his track records, plans and agenda for developing Nigeria.

“How will Nigeria develop? How do we banish hunger? How do we improve the insecurity and how do we eliminate killing one another, and shedding of blood of innocent citizens, that is what we must take to the office and not our religion.

“My intention is clear, not religiosity. My intention is to develop this country, to bring prosperity to our country and I have a better qualification, better track records, better exposure, and better vision than any of my mates.

“When the shortlisted names came, I looked at the characters on the list, their background and everything and here is somebody (Kassim Shetimma) who is so brilliant, so committed, who, during the crisis in Borno protected Christians,” he said.

The bishops, however, said the meeting is not an affirmation they’ll endorse APC’s candidate.

Chairman of Pentecostal Bishops Forum of Northern Nigeria, Archbishop John Praise, said, “We are not committed to endorsing anybody, but you should ask your conscience and from what you have heard and from the explanation, he (Tinubu) had given to us to make your own judgement of who will better rule and handle the country.”

However, The closed-door meeting between the Presidential Candidate of All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and the Pentecostal Bishops Forum of Northern Nigeria in Abuja came under scrutiny on Thursday night.

The social media pages of the former governor of Lagos State were bombarded with mixed reactions from a cross-section of Nigerians, especially on Facebook and Twitter, hours after exclusive photographs of his rendezvous with the northern clerics in his Abuja campaign office hit the internet.

The development is coming barely three months after the Christian Association of Nigeria dissociated itself from the presence of some alleged bishops and pastors at the unveiling of the vice presidential candidate of the party, Kashim Shettima, saying they were desperados who went there for themselves.

CAN stated that although Tinubu was free to “hire mechanics and other artisans and sew clerical garments for them”, the effort would only add to their many ropes but would not change the need for fairness and justice.

Similarly, on Tuesday, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, made renewed threats to mobilise the northern Christian electorate to vote against Tinubu in the February 25, 2023 poll.

Dogara had predicted that adopting a Muslim-Muslim ticket was a fruitless political effort that was “doomed to end in spectacular failure.”

The ex-speaker made the statement while delivering his keynote address at a summit tagged ‘Meet The Church,’ organised by the Nigeria National Christian Coalition.

Lawal, on the other hand, vowed that the introduction of a same-faith ticket by the APC was a deliberate plan to further create divisions in the north.

The disgruntled former SGF, who spoke during an interview on Arise Television, declared that he was working with about 40 Christian leaders in the north to ensure that the contentious APC ticket failed.

But in Thursday’s meeting, the APC national leader reportedly explained to the PBFNS delegation led by Archbishop John Praise of Dominion Chapel International Church his reason for selecting Shettima to the northern Christian bishops.

Tinubu stated that his selection of Shettima was not a deliberate attempt to spite the Christian community but a choice he had to make to give Nigerians good governance if he got elected.

He stated, “Earlier today at a lively, productive and amiable meeting with a delegation representing the Pentecostal Bishops Forum of Northern Nigeria, we discussed important issues of national significance as well as my determination to deliver unity, harmony and lasting peace to Nigeria.”

The reactions to his social media posts were instantaneous. While some of his followers and party supporters hailed his action, critics trolled and lampooned him for attempting to pull another stunt on the Christian community.
