The Defence Headquarters has urged Nigerians to prevent terrorists from having free rein in the New Year.

The DHQ called on the citizens to be security conscious and report criminal activities in their environments to security operatives.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Edward Buba, promised that the military would take action on such tip-offs.

“Make Nigerians no gree for terrorists this year. You see something, you say something and we assure them of doing something, ”he said in pidgin.

Buba joined in using the slang ‘no gree for anybody ‘which is currently trending among youths as slang for the year.

Many believe that the slang is about staying to one’s beliefs and not easily succumbing to the influence of others.

Unlike Buba, however, the spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, had on Wednesday warned that the slang was capable of plunging the country into crisis.

After asking Nigerians to rise against terrorists, Buba noted that the aim of the military in 2024 is to locate and destroy the terrorists wherever they were hiding.

He added, ” The aim of our ongoing operations remains unchanged and clear even in the new year 2024. We aim to find and destroy the terrorist wherever they may be hiding to ensure their enduring defeat. This would deny the terrorist the ability to terrorize or hurt citizens across the country.

“Our operations indicate that we are hunting the terrorist commanders and their senior leadership. Indeed, from their topmost leadership to the lowest commanders are dead men walking and we will stop at nothing until they are dead or surrender.”

He noted that military operations in the last two weeks had resulted in the killing of 86 terrorists, while 101 have been arrested.

“Our operations resulted in 86 neutralized terrorists with 101 of them arrested. Troops also arrested 30 perpetrators of oil theft and rescued 21 kidnapped hostages.

“In the SS, troops denied oil theft of the estimated sum of N736,115,470.00 only,” Buba added

Meanwhile, The Nigerian Police Force has expressed its strong disapproval of the popular slang, ‘no go gree for anybody’, being used by youths and citizens across the country.

The popular slang “No Gree for Anybody” has already gained widespread attention.

Many believe the slang is about staying true to one’s beliefs and not easily succumbing to the influence of others.

However, the police, through its spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, warned that it could clamp down on people using the slang.

During a press briefing on Wednesday, Adejobi revealed that the police had received intelligence suggesting that the slogan had the potential to incite a revolution within the country.

He said, “Let me say that the new slogan for 2023, 2024 for our young ones is ‘no go gree for anybody.’

“We have been informed from our intelligence that this slogan is coming from a revolutionary sector that may likely cause problems across the country.

“‘No go gree for anybody’ is being seen as just a normal talk, but in the security business, in the security community, we have seen it as a very dangerous slogan that can trigger a crisis.”

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, is on his way to the Wushishi Local Government Area of Niger where bandits ambushed and killed troops.

Many troops were said to have died during the attack which happened on Monday.

Also, there were unconfirmed reports that the crashed Nigerian Air Force aircraft was the handiwork of the bandits. The Air Force has yet to debunk or confirm the reports.

However, speaking in an interview with our correspondent on Tuesday, the Director, Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, confirmed there were casualties on the troops’ side but refused to give details.

He told our correspondent that attention should be on the families of the troops left behind and not the number of troops killed.

Onyema added that the Army Chief was on his way to the scene to motivate the troops.

He said, “I can confirm that there was an incident in Wushishi LG of Niger State. Our gallant patriots paid the supreme price when they ran into an ambush staged by insurgents. They were courageous till the end. They stood their ground and defended our great country with their lives.

“The focus now is how to console and bring respite to those they left behind. Sadly, the incident occurred while the Chief of Army Staff is on an operational tour of the North-West Operations theatre for an on-the-spot assessment and reinvigoration of ongoing operations. At least three have died as Sudan’s army and a notorious paramilitary force battle with heavy weapons in the capital Khartoum amid tensions over a proposed transition to civilian rule.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) says it has taken control of at least three airports, the army chief’s residence and the presidential palace.

The army denies this and says its air force is attacking paramilitary bases.

People are attempting to shelter from the fighting.

“Shooting is still ongoing and people are staying indoors – there is so much panic and fear,” an eyewitness told the BBC via her Kenya-based sister.

Residents had not been expecting the clashes, she said, and many had been caught in transit. with bridges and roads closed and many schools in lockdown.

Duaa Tariq was speaking to the BBC when a military plane flew over her building – “They’re shooting live ammunition at the roof of the house next door and we’re just now taking shelter,” she said.

US Ambassador John Godfrey said he “woke up to the deeply disturbing sounds of gunfire and fighting. I am currently sheltering in place with the Embassy team, as Sudanese throughout Khartoum and elsewhere are doing”. He urged senior military leaders to stop the fighting.

Russia’s embassy was also concerned by the “escalation of violence” and urged a ceasefire, Reuters reports.

There are also reports of clashes at the state TV station.

RSF commander Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, told al-Jazeera that he would fight on until all army bases had been captured.

He said army chief Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan was a “criminal” and would either be killed or “face justice”.

Earlier the RSF had said that one of its camps in the south of Khartoum had been attacked.

For its part, the army has said that RSF fighters have been trying to seize the military headquarters.

“Fighters from the Rapid Support Forces attacked several army camps in Khartoum and elsewhere around Sudan,” the AFP news agency quotes army spokesman Brig Gen Nabil Abdallah as saying.

“Clashes are ongoing and the army is carrying out its duty to safeguard the country.”

The Reuters news agency is also citing witnesses as saying that there was gunfire in the northern city of Merowe. The RSF deployed forces near that base on Thursday as tensions increased.

Generals have been running the country, through what is called the Sovereign Council, since a coup in October 2021.

Gen Burhan is president of the council while Hemedti is its vice-president.

But a proposed move to a civilian-led government has foundered on the timetable to integrate the RSF into the national army – the RSF wanted to delay it for 10 years, but the army said it should happen in two years.

Hemedti was a key figure in the conflict in Darfur that began in 2003 and has left hundreds of thousands dead.

Western powers and regional leaders had urged the two sides to de-escalate tensions and to go back to talks aimed at restoring civilian rule.

There had been signs on Friday that the situation would be resolved.

The 2021 coup ended a period of more than two years when military and civilian leaders were sharing power. That deal came after Sudan’s long-term authoritarian President Omar al-Bashir was overthrown.

There have been regular pro-democracy protests in Khartoum ever since the coup.

Politics

The Chief Press Secretary, CPS, to Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Mr Taiwo Adisa has warned opposition elements in the state to stop playing politics with the insecurity situation in Ibarapa and Oke-Ogun areas of the state.

A statement by the governor’s aide says that most of the comments attributed to opposition elements on the security situation in the state missed the point due to pettiness, contempt and clear attempt to play to the gallery.

According to him, if opposition elements were true lovers of the state, they should have used the occasion to demonstrate patriotism by empathising with the people of the state and coming up with their own ideas on how to address the situation.

Mr Adisa said Governor Makinde had, at the height of the insecurity in Ibarapa, deployed Operation Burst, a state-backed security outfit comprising the Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Police to Ibarapa in large numbers.

The governor had also caused to be deployed, men and officers of MOPOL 72, located strategically in Ago-Are in Oke-Ogun axis.

He added that the government followed-up that deployment with the mass deployment of the men of the Oyo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun, to Ibarapa and Oke-Ogun axes to quench the rising insecurity.

Mr Adisa maintained that the mass deployment of security operatives to the area had begun to yield positive results in the last few weeks, stating that on January 9, the Amotekun Corps worked with Vigilante Group of Nigeria, local hunters, and Miyetti Allah Vigilantes to comb forests straddling four local governments in Ibarapa and Iwajowa Local Government Areas of Oke-Ogun.

“For the avoidance of doubt, before those fanning the embers of ethnic crisis and their Hosanna crowd went to town with their showmanship gimmicks, the government had made serious efforts to tame the insecurity situation in Ibarapa.”

“Apart from initiating several peace meetings between Yoruba and Fulani residents of the axes, the government took steps to deploy a heavy security presence to Ibarapa and at a point, even backed a community-based effort to rid the forests of kidnappers and bandits.”

“It would be recalled that the government had backed a similar approach in Kisi, Igbeti and Igboho axes of the state and was able to achieve a great success without necessarily making noise in the media about it.”

Iyabo Adebisi
