Samuel Eto’o, the legendary Cameroonian footballer, once reunited with an old friend from his youth whom he had played football with.

In a video shared online, Eto’o was heard saying “he was my friend, I played with him”.

The friend, despite sharing the same passion and talent for the game during their younger days, had taken a different path in life and working as a security guard.

The encounter served as a poignant reminder of the unpredictability of life and the varying outcomes individuals face despite similar beginnings.

Eto’o’s success contrasted sharply with his friend’s reality, highlighting themes of destiny, opportunity, and perseverance in their respective journeys.

Super Eagles winger, Ademola Lookman was on the score sheet twice as Nigeria saw off perennial rivals Cameroon to book a quarter finals spot at the ongoing AFCON 2023.

Goals in either half of the tie ensured that Nigeria will continue in the competition as they seek a fourth AFCON title.

Nigeria had an early Semi Ajayi goal disallowed following a VAR review in this last-16 clash before the constant pressing and bullying of the Cameroon defence by Victor Osimhen led to Lookman finding the net in the 36th minute.

The hardworking defence kept the Indomitable Lions at bay before Lookman in a man-of-the-match display made sure of the victory in the 90th minute in front of 22,085 fans at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.

They will now return to the same venue for a last-eight meeting next Friday with Angola, who earlier defeated Namibia 3-0.

With the fearsome Osimhen leading from the front, the Super Eagles are clearly a serious threat to reigning champions Senegal as they chase a fourth continental crown.

This fixture is a Cup of Nations classic, with the first three of Cameroon’s five titles coming after wins over Nigeria in the final.

The very first, when a side led by Roger Milla came from behind to win 3-1 in 1984, was achieved in this same stadium in Ivory Coast’s economic capital.

Nigeria won the most recent encounter with their neighbours, in the last 16 in Egypt five years ago, and their current side came into this match as favourites against Rigobert Song’s Cameroon.

The Super Eagles eased through their group unbeaten, while Cameroon needed a stoppage-time goal against Gambia to progress.

Cameroon is rolling out the world’s first routine vaccine programme against malaria, in a global fight projected to save thousands of children’s lives across Africa.

The World Health Organization (WHO)-approved RTS,S Vaccine, developed by British drugmaker GSK, is targeting infants in Cameroon’s 42 worst-affected districts.

The central African country will be the first country to administer doses through a routine immunisation programme, following successful pilot campaigns in Kenya, Ghana and Malawi.

The rollout, due to start on Monday, was described by health officials as a milestone in the decades-long effort to curb malaria in the continent.

Twenty other countries aim to roll out the programme this year, according to global vaccine alliance Gavi.

The four-dose vaccine is only about 30% effective and protection begins to fade after several months.

GSK said it can only produce about 15 million doses a year.

States along the path of River Benue in Nigeria have been urged to brace up for possible flood disasters in their various domains following the release of huge volumes of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon.

The Director of the African Affairs, Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Umar Salisu, said in a letter dated August 21, 2023, that the ministry received a note from the High Commission of Cameroon as regards the opening of the dam.

Mr Salisu said the letter, which was addressed to the National Emergency Management Agency, read in part, “I have the honour to inform that the ministry is in receipt of a Note Verbale from the High Commission of the Republic of Cameroon informing that Cameroonian officials have resolved to open the flood gates of the Lagdo Dam on the Benue River in days ahead due to the heavy rainfall around the dam catchment area in Northern Cameroon.”

According to the National Emergency Management Agency officials, no fewer than 11 states including Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Anambra, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Cross River are likely to feel the negative impacts of the opening of the dam.

To prevent deaths and other disasters associated with floods, states that are likely to be affected have asked residents of flood-prone areas to vacate such communities.

An enormous plume of dust from the Sahara desert threatens to sweep through half of Cameroon, according to the transport minister.

If the forecast wind conditions are maintained the dust could cause road accidents due to reduced visibility, Ernest Ngalle Bibehe warned in a press statement.

The dust could also cause respiratory diseases, Mr Bibehe added.

The plume of dust is currently crossing Cameroon’s Far North region and could reach four other regions in the coming days.

The minister has urged people to drive carefully and protect their eyes and noses appropriately.

Each year Cameroon experiences dust storms from the Sahara that cross the country from north to south.

A senator from Cameroon’s ruling party has been kidnapped in an English-speaking region where separatist groups have declared independence, according to news agencies.

Elizabeth Regina Mundi was abducted on Saturday along with her driver in the north-western town of Bamenda, local officials are quoted as saying.

An official told the AFP news agency that two wings of the separatist Ambazonian Defence Forces (ADF) had said they carried out the abduction.

A video has surfaced on social media showing the senator reading a statement calling for the independence of the Ambazonia republic.

Anglophone activists say the country’s French-speaking majority is marginalising the English-speaking minority.
