The Ekiti State government and the organised labour has reached an agreement on the misunderstanding surrounding the payment of minimum wage to certain categories of workers.


The Head of Service, Mrs Peju Babafemi led government officials to the meeting where both parties signed a new agreement on modalities adopted in the payment of the approved wage and consequential adjustment to workers.


Part of the resolution was that government will now begin the implementation of the minimum wage and consequential adjustment for Grade levels 7 to 12 in the local govt service, judiciary and health workers by this month.


According to the communique issued at the end of the meeting held in Ado Ekiti, the consequential adjustment for Grade levels 13 to 17 would be implemented base on the recommendation of economic review committee comprising of labour and government representatives.


Also, both parties agreed that no labour leader would be penalised or sanctioned due to role they played in the negotiation of the workers demand.


Government and organised labour resolved that no worker should be retrenched, victimised or intimidated as a result of the implementation of the minimum wage and consequential adjustment.

The organised labour union in Ekiti State has announced the suspension of its ongoing strike.

The workers had on Monday embarked on a warning strike over the controversy surrounding the payment of their, outstanding salary, minimum wage and other issues affecting them.

According to the Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, the suspension of the strike is as a result of the agreement it reached with the state house of Assembly committee on public service and labour matters that pledged on behalf of the state government that the agreement would be honoured.

The meeting at the State Assembly complex had in attendance, NLC Chairman, TUC Chairman, and JANC Chairman.

Others include the Ekiti State Head of Service, Mrs Peju Babafemi, Chairman, House Committee on Public Service & Labour Matters, Hon. Juwa Adegbuyi, his vice Gboyega Aribisogan among others.

The labour leaders urged the State Government to honour the agreements while pledging that it would soon visit the headquarters of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company in the State to picket the office and demand the reason for the power outage in the State, and the reason for
taking money for energy not consumed.

Workers in Ekiti state on Monday complied with the three-day warning strike declared by the leadership of organised labour in the state to press home their demands.

At the Ekiti State Secretariat in Ado Ekiti, at some of the Ministries, Departments and Agencies, only few workers were seen on ground.

The few workers on duty were seen in groups discussing the issue of the strike.

Also, entrances into some of the offices were locked while few offices were opened for management staff.

Similarly, reports from across the sixteen local governments of Ekiti state showed that council workers complied with warning strike.

However, council chairmen and other appointees as well as management staff were at their duty posts.

The Ekiti State Head of Service, Dr Peju Babafemi had earlier appealed to the organized labour to shelve the strike to enable the state government dialogue with them.

Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi has extended total lockdown in the state for six days and ordered a dusk to dawn curfew every day of the week till further notice as part of measures to contain the spread of the Coronavirus in the state.

In a live broadcast, Governor Fayemi banned interstate travel and vowed to prosecute any driver who violates the order while such person might forfeit the vehicle to Government.

He said anyone visiting the state compulsorily would be quarantined for fourteen days and the person would be responsible for his or her upkeep.

Dr Fayemi maintained that the business activities would resume in the state for only three days a week from the hours of seven o’clock in the morning to four o clock in the evening only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays starting from 4th of May, to allow Artisans fend for their families.

The Ekiti state governor mandated every resident of the state to put on face marks and warned that anyone caught flouting the order would be charged for endangering the lives of the public.

He said that all major markets in Ado-Ekiti should remain closed, while the ban on social groups is still in force and ordered that okada riders should not carry more than a person, taxi three persons and tricycle two passengers.

Governor Fayemi advised the public to always observe the personal hygiene in order to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.

The online application for the recruitment of teachers into the public primary schools in Ekiti State will end today.

About twenty five thousand job seekers have so far applied for the online recruitment.

The Ekiti State, Head of Service, Mr. Ayodeji Ajayi said recently that one thousand and one hundred of the applicants would be recruited, especially holders of National Certificate in Education, NCE, and those who have degrees in courses on Education.

Ekiti State government says it will continue to raise a crop of competent, efficient and effective officers whose desire will be to implement government policies and make service delivery their ultimate goal. 

Ekiti State Head of Service, Mr. Ayodeji Ajayi made this known while declaring open a week-long induction/orientation course for newly appointed Administrative Officers, Accountants, Auditors, Registrars of Cooperatives and Inspector of Taxes at the Staff Development Centre, Ado-Ekiti. 

Mr. Ajayi who described the course as very significant towards exposing the newly-appointed officers to the intricacies of government business, charged them to make the best of the induction meant to equip the officers with necessary skills and knowledge that would prepare them for the task ahead.  

The Permanent Secretary, Office of Capacity Development and Reforms, Mr. Oluwadare Ajayi advised the participants to work in support of the ideals of the Public Service and shun unethical practices.

Some of the participants, including Tope Adigun, Bolanle Ogundipe, Anthony Olatoye and Ayodele Alabi expressed their readiness to contribute their quota with vigour to the development of the Civil Service in the state.

Ekiti State Head of Service, Mr Ayodeji Ajayi has expressed satisfaction with the cooperation of teachers in the state on the recently concluded staff verification exercise conducted by the Teaching Service Commission for teachers in Public Secondary Schools.

Speaking with newsmen on Ado Ekiti, Mr Ajayi noted that contrary to speculations in some quarters on a purported planned retirement of teachers as a result of the exercise, it was designed to verify staff status to enable government recruit additional teachers before the September, 2019 resumption of new academic session. 

The Head of Service stated that the exercise would help to correct lopsidedness and irregularities in the deployment of teachers observed the system to engender the welfare of both active staff and retirees of the Teaching Service Commission. 

He urged all academic and non academic staff in the sector to continue to put in their best to justify timely payment of salary.
