Ogun State-owned Football Outfit, Gateway United FC has resumed training and other preparatory activities ahead the 2022/2023 Nigeria National League, NNL, campaign. 

The first training session of the year was held today at Muda Lawal Stadium, Asero, Abeokuta.

Addressing the team which included returning and scouted ones, the General Manager of the Club, Mr Niyi Soleye welcomed both officials and players to the new year and advised that every player should take the task at hand very seriously.

He reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Dapo Abiodun to support the team in their quest to achieve the set targets.

Also, the Head Coach, Toyin Ayinla said the Club would continue from where it left off last year before the yuletide.

He announced that the team would play different grades of friendlies and possibly go on at least one Tour before the Season kicks off.

Gateway United Football Club will on Sunday take on Ijebu United Football Club in the first semi-final match of the Ogun State Federation Cup.

The game according to the Chairman, Ogun State Football Association, Alhaji Ganiu Majekodunmi, will be played at the Remo Stars Stadium, in Ikenne, Ogun State, from ten O’clock in the morning.

Alhaji Majekodunmi noted that the second game which will be played simultaneously is between Nilayo Football Club and Easy Well Football Club.

The Ogun State Football Association Chairman pointed out that the games will be played behind closed doors in compliance with COVID-19 safety guidelines.

Gateway United football club of Ogun have continued their impressive run in the Nigeria National League following their two nil win over Apex Krane FC from Agbor, Delta state in a week four encounter.


Goals from Haliru Salifu and in each half of the encounter played at the MKO international stadium, Kuto Abeokuta  gave the Akeem Busari led team the maximum three points at stake.


The home team dominated possession from the blast of the whistle with Seyi Okeowo and Odusina Sunkanmi disturbing the defence line of the visitor.
Haruna Salifu however got the opening goal in the 28th minute of the game when he tucked home Seyi Okeowo’s well weighted in free kick from the left.


The visitor failed to draw level in the 37th minute when the referee adjudged a handball in the area to give the away team a penalty. 
Ibukun Araromi however dived to his right to make a big save as the score line remained 1-0 to the host. 


Aderemi Yusuf got the second goal for Gateway United in the second half of the game to put match beyond the visitor.


Speaking after the match, Coach Akeem Busari said the victory was well deserved considering the fact that team is still work in progress.


On his part, Coach Tosan Bob-Blankson of Apex Krane said inability of the player to convert the penalty awarded in the first half destabilized the team.

Up next for the Hakeem Busari led team would be an Ogun State Derby when they face Remo Stars in Ikenne in an NNL match day  5 meeting.

The Acting General Manager, Gateway United Football Club, Mr Niyi Soleye has commended the Ogun State Government for the prompt payments of players’ salaries despite the harsh economy occasioned by coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Soleye stated this in Abeokuta while receiving the executive members of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Ogun State chapter led by its Chairman, Alhaji Hakeem Akintunde.

The Gateway United football club Acting General said the regular payment of the players’ salaries was an indication of a new era to the state owned football club.

Mr Soleye, who thanked the sports writers in the state for their support for team, said there was the need for the sustenance of the existing cordial relationship between the club and the professionals.

Earlier, SWAN Chairman, Alhaji Hakeem Akintunde had urged the management of Gateway United to see the association as partner in progress.

Alhaji Akintunde also reaffirmed the commitment of the sports writers in the state to project the activities of the club.
