Nigerian Army Holds 28th Tiger Golf Open Tournament in December

The 2 Division Nigerian Army Ibadan is to organize its 28th Tiger Golf Open Tournament next month. 

This is contained in a statement signed in Ibadan by the 2 Division Nigerian Army public relations officer, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Ekeocha.

According to the statement, the Tiger Opens Golf Tournament is an annual event organized by headquarters 2 Divison, Nigerian Army to promote interaction amongst golf enthusiasts in Nigeria.

The statement notes that the tournament, which will be held from the 1st to the 3rd of next month, has grown from its humble beginnings 27 years ago and has contributed towards sports, the game of golf and in fostering civil-military relations. 

It notes further that The 28th edition of the event is scheduled to take place at Tiger Golf Club, Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Ibadan. 

According to the statement, Chairman of the event, Brigadier General George Nkenke states that 200 golfers had already registered for the tournament and about 17 trophies are expected to be won.

The statement states further that the Special Guest of Honour for the event is the Governor of Oyo State Engineer Seyi Makinde. 

The event, which will start with a cocktail, ends with an elaborate closing ceremony on the 3rd of December this year.

Oyo Govt. Reiterates Commitment to Sports

Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde says his administration is developing sports to productively engage youths in the state.

The governor stated this at the presentation of awards and certificates to the winners of the Oyo State 2021 Junior Golf Competition, to conclude a weeklong Golf Clinic organised for kids and teenagers by the Oyo State Ministry of Youth and Sports.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, indicates that the governor, while speaking at the Ibadan Golf Club, Ibadan, venue of the event, noted that the state has been creating platforms for youths to channel their energies to sports. 

Governor Makinde also used the occasion to celebrate the achievement of the state, which placed 6th on the medal table of the just concluded National Sports Festival (Edo 2020) with 103 medals, commending the state’s athletes.

He equally charged the Sports Ministry to ensure that the contingent comes back with 100 Gold medals in the 2022 Festival slated for Delta State.

According to him, the state will put everything in place to further develop sports, adding that his administration has embarked on the upgrade of sporting facilities across the state in order to attract talents and to ensure that there is a programme for every child, even those who could not afford golf kits.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Seun Fakorede, appreciated the governor for supporting sports activities in the state.

Similarly, the brain behind the Golf Clinic who is the Special Assistant to Governor on Sports Development, Mr. Tobi Oyewunmi admonished parents to encourage their wards to develop interest in sports and inculcate the spirit of sportsmanship in them.

Edo 2020: Oyo Wins Medal In Golf After 17 Years

Team Oyo yesterday won silver medal in Golf at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Edo state.

The last time Team Oyo won a medal was at the National Sports Festival in Abuja 2004.

Emmanuel Samuel and Olalekan Ogunbameru won the silver medal in men’s doubles foursome alternative shot category of Golf, edging out Bayelsa state, who won Bronze medal.

The Pacesetter Athletes have so far won one hundred and two medals, with twenty nine gold, thirty silver and forty three bronze.

With few games to be decided today, Delta state is sitting comfortably on the medals table, while Edo and Bayelsa states are trailing the Ifeanyi Okowa’s Athletes.

Meanwhile, the closing ceremony of the 20th national sports festival will come up this evening at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.

Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo is expected to declare the festival closed, while the hosts of the 2022 edition will be announced at the ceremony.
