Ismail Adewale has emerged winner in the men’s single of the maiden edition of Governor Seyi Makinde, GSM Tennis Championship which came to an end on Thursday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
Adewale outplayed Samson Adesina by two to one set, (10-7) in the keenly contested final.
In the Ladies’ single Category, Sarah Adegoke, with her wealth of experience, dismissed Abiodun Oyegoke 6-0, 6-0 to clinch the only trophy meant for the category and a fifty thousand naira cash prize.
In the Junior boys’ category, Ganiyu Mubarak defeated Michael Akinmusire by two sets in the final, while Imole Afolabi equally won the final of the girls’ category by two sets.
In the Veteran Doubles, the duo of Akin Orebiyi and Taju Kasali showcased their tennis skills in the final to go home with the star prize.
Speaking with newsmen, the organizer of the competition, who is also the Special Assistant to Governor Seyi Makinde on sports development, Mr Tobi Oyewumi, stated that talents discovered at the championship would be exposed to regular competitions.
One hundred and twelve players participated in the three day event.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state this morning engaged his Chief of Staff, Bisi Ilaka in an exhibition match to declare open the maiden edition of GSM Tennis Championship at Ibadan Recreation Club, Sabo.

Spectators were thrilled with various skills displayed by Governor Makinde, who has been a tennis player of many years and Chief Ilaka.

Earlier, Governor Makinde had reiterated the determination of his administration to continue to give sports the needed attention.

One hundred and twelve players are participating in the GSM Tennis Championship which will end this Thursday.

Registration for the maiden edition of Governor Seyi Makinde, GSM Tennis Championship is ongoing at Ibadan Recreation Club, Sabo.

According to a statement from the office of the Special Assistant on Sports to Governor Makinde, the registration closes on Friday, December 18, 2020, while the Championship will be held from the 22nd to 24th December, 2020.

Special Assistant on Sports to His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, Honourable Tobi Oyewumi, who is the organiser of the Championship, announced that the event would be in three categories.

Honourable Oyewumi explained that the Junior Category will be for children under fourteen years, the Pro Category is open to all tennis players, while the Super Veteran Category, is for Senior citizens above sixty years.

Honourable Oyewumi noted that the state government would make it an annual event, which is aimed at discovery of tennis talents and urged interested members of the public to obtain registration forms at Ibadan Recreation Club, Sabo.

The statement adds that the 2020 GSM Tennis Championship will be a memorable event for all participants.
