On the occasion of Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Anniversary today, some residents of Akure, Ondo state have appealed to those in positions of authority to look inward and come up with policies that will truly ease the economic burden currently being borne by citizens.

In separate interviews in Akure, the residents said at sixty three, the journey of Nigeria so far could not be totally described as a success story owing to many challenges still facing the country.

One of them, the vicar, St Thomas’s Anglican Church, Isinkan Akure, venerable Thompson Akinboro said it was disheartening that many past Nigerian leaders did not rule with the fear of God thus plunging both the nation and her people in various challenges.

Venerable  Akinboro, however, stressed that all hope was not lost if the current set of leaders were able to right the wrong in all areas, including administering the people with the fear of God.

A pensioner,  Mr Femi Balogun described the journey of Nigeria in the last sixty three years as not too smooth nor rough but emphasised on the need for sincerity on the part of government.  

Mr Balogun suggested that rather than sharing rice and other food items as palliatives, the nation’s infrastructure should be improved upon while healthcare services be made totally free for children and the aged.

Also voicing his opinion on Nigeria at sixty three, A Deputy Director with public complaints commission in Ondo state, Mr Olorunfemi Akinaanu believed that with patience on the part of citizens, the present crop of leaders had the capacity to turn around the fortunes of Nigeria.
