The Media is a critical stakeholder for credible election in Edo – IPC

The International Press Centre, IPC, has encouraged security agencies to be professional in the discharge of their duties and recognize the media as a critical factor for credible and peaceful elections in Edo State.

IPC Executive Director, Mr. Lanre Arogundade made the call while speaking against the emerging accusations and counter-accusations by political actors and other players in the electoral process and state governorship election tomorrow.

Mr Arogundade, who noted that though the signing of the peace accord had allayed fears of the electorate, said there was the need for stakeholders including the observers to provide the journalists covering the elections with useful information to ensure the credibility of the electoral process.

IPC Executive Director also encouraged the journalists to shun partisan politics, be safety conscious and report any form of attack to the relevant agencies, especially the state chapter of NUJ for prompt action.

Experts Identify Research as Journalists Tool for Agenda Setting

Journalists have been charged to engage more in Investigations that will make political Officeholders accountable to the people while making electioneering promises and after elections.

Speakers at a Media workshop in Lagos made the submission while contributing to the discourse on ‘Using the Freedom of Information Act FOI, for Investigative Reports on Campaign Financing and Covid-19 Accountability Issues’ 

A resource person and Executive Director, OJA Development Consult, Mr Jide Ojo said the agenda setting role of the media must be taken seriously at this period of the country’s battle with varying degree of Corruption among politicians.

A freelance investigative journalist, Ms Tobore Ovuorie also challenged participants to shun sentiments and invest their time and resources into doing in – depth researches that would produce unusual results to turn around the country’s situation. 

Ms Ovuorie was of the opinion that investigative journalism remained a process that must be explored to determine the true situation through constant observations, interviews and verification of all identified sources.

On his part, the Executive Director, Media Rights Agenda, Mr Edetaen Ojo said journalists must ensure that transparency and accountability became deeply rooted in political Campaign Issues to engender good governance.

Earlier, the Executive Director, International Press Centre, Mr Lanre Arogundade had explained that the training was organized to harness intellectual resources towards proffering solutions to the gradual decline of Investigative Journalism and the growing public perception that the media had been compromised.
