Building Collapse Claims One

One person has been confirmed dead after a storey building collapsed in the Aromire area of Ikeja, Lagos State.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, in a statement on Thursday, said the building formerly occupied by a Mart, was being worked on by unskilled labourers resulting in a partial collapse.

He said, “The Agency responded to distress calls and upon arrival, discovered that a storey building formerly occupied by the MART, was being worked on by unskilled labourers resulting in a partial collapse.

“An adult male reported to be a welder lost his life instantly at the scene. His remains were recovered and removed from the scene.

“The post-disaster assessment conducted by the Agency’s LRT indicates that the building is stable and does not pose a threat to other buildings around.

The building has been cordoned off and LASBCA and Nigeria Police have been contacted for further action.”

An official of LASBCA, who preferred anonymity as he was not authorised to speak on the incident, told newsmen that efforts were ongoing to demolish the structure.

He said, “We have marked the building for demolition. We are only waiting for the machine to arrive.”

We will work on ending tanker explosions – Gov. Abiodun

Ogun and Lagos State governments are collaborating with relevant stakeholders to work out the modalities to check incessant gas explosions in both states.

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun stated this during a visit to the scene of a gas explosion that razed Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation, OPIC Plaza in Ikeja, Lagos.

Governor Abiodun said the two states would work with the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, and others to ensure that all tankers carrying petroleum products were critically examined to ascertain their road worthiness. 

Governor Abiodun who commended the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, for its prompt response, gave the assurance that the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, signed recently by the two states would be explored to enhance the safety of lives and property of the people. 

The governor who described the OPIC fire incident as unfortunate sympathized with the families of those that were caught in the disaster and prayed God to comfort them.
